One College – Unlimited Opportunities
During week five, students from Great Lakes
College performed in the Speech and Drama
Eisteddfod in Taree. Students participated in a
number of sections including the prepared
speech, duologue, unscripted drama, playbuild
and scripted drama sections. All students
performed well throughout the event and this led
to lots of success for the college.
Year 10 Forster Campus student Ella Smee got the
College’s Taree Eisteddfod campaign off to a
roaring start by receiving a highly commended for
her speech about school. This was followed by a
momentous victory for Year 9 Forster Campus
students, Abbey Loadsman and Janaiya Hurry,
who were victorious with their play titled ‘Jack
and Jill.’
The title wave of accolades continued during
Thursday sessions with a first place for Tuncurry
Campus with their year 10 playbuild titled “You’ll
Get Over It.” Followed by a second place win from
Year 9 titled “The Crime.” Gabriel Zarb from Year
10 also received a $50 cheque for the best
performing male actor on the day.
Students and the accompanying teachers had all
in all a great day. Let us not forget the Queen
inspired coach karaoke, on the journey home,
that kept everyone in high spirits until the closing
of the bus doors signalled the end of a successful
day. Great Lakes College truly is one campus that
provides its students with unlimited
opportunities.

YOUNG CREATIVE ARTISTS AT WORK
During the term, Visual Arts and Photography
students across the three campuses have been
actively engaged in exploring the world around
them. They have been developing their own voice
to express what they make of this world through
art and photography.
On the first weekend in June, the Pacific Palms
Youth Art Festival was held at the Palms Public
School. Over 30 works from college students was
exhibited in the show. 17 students won First,
Second, Third and Highly Commended prizes
across six categories. Many of these with cash
prize money. These works were all exhibited in
the adult Pacific Palms Art Show over the long
weekend. This show attracts local and interstate
artists because of the prize money offered, and
also a large audience of local and visitors due to
coinciding with the holiday.
Whilst the artists have been busy and gaining
local attention, the musicians and actors have also
been at work. Fifty students from the three
campuses were given free tickets to attend a
workshop on the orchestra at The Manning
Entertainment Centre in May. Conducted by the
Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the students were
treated to an inspiring performance with
explanations of the various instruments and
works played. Staff and students came back
motivated by the experience ready to make
music.
Making music is exactly what the students have
been doing, with several entries being prepared
for the Taree Eisteddfod. The drama students
have also performed at the Eisteddfod. More
news on this to follow later.

GREAT LAKES AMERICAN TRIP
January 2021
An opportunity exists for students from Great
Lakes College to take part in a cultural exchange
trip to the United States of America for twenty
days, during January 2021.
Destinations include: Los Angeles (Disneyland,
Universal Studios, Hollywood, Santa Monica,
Beverly Hills, Knott’s Berry Farm and San Diego);
San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz);
and a hosting destination from a choice of Seattle,
Phoenix, San Diego, Portland and others.
A feature of the tour is that students spend
nearly two weeks living with an American Family.
This will be the eleventh time that students from
the Great Lakes area have had this opportunity,
following successful trips in 2003, 2005, 2007,
2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
The cost of the trip in 2021 will be approximately
$6895, which includes all airfares, transfers,
accommodation, breakfasts, sightseeing and
admission to attractions. As in previous years, the
trip will be restricted to students who will be in
Years 11, 12, or just left school after finishing their
HSC. (Years 9, 10 and 11 this year).
Interested students should have brought home
brochures concerning the trip. An information
night will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd to provide
parents with answers to commonly asked
questions, such as:
“How much spending money will my child need to
take?”
“How are the American Host families chosen?”
“Have the chaperones going on the trip
accompanying and supervising the travellers ever
done anything like this before?”
Students travel as part of a supervised group with
a teacher as Group Leader. Representatives from
Educational World Travel will be located in the
hotels and host city.
The Group Leader in charge will be in attendance
at the parent information evening, along with a
representative from Educational World Travel who
will explain the program in detail, distribute
application documents and answer any questions.
Please contact Mr Matt Avery at the Senior
Campus for further information.

The 2019 NSW All Schools and Combined High
Schools Canoeing Championships were held from
25-28 May. Students from 26 schools
participated at this year’s state championships.
Our team of Great Lakes College paddlers
consisted of seven paddlers from all three
campuses of Great Lakes College, Camden and
Dylan Ceccato, Brady and Luke McNeil, Max
Hamilton and Jock Sweeney. These paddlers
were accompanied by Forster Public School’s
Maxim Ceccato and Sophia Sweeney, from St
Claire’s High School.
The first day of completion was on the Clarence
River, Grafton for the flatwater events, then out
to the Mann River for the whitewater events in
slalom, sprints and wildwater.
All paddlers achieved lots of individual and team
successes across the four days of competition,
with regular podium finishes from most paddlers.
Unfortunately for us, Casino High School took the
All Schools and CHS Shields home this year,
beating Great Lakes only by a few points. Great
Lakes College paddlers are now determined to
win them back and bring the trophies home next
year. The team are now having a well-deserved
break but will resume with training in the spring
time, in preparation for the national titles held in
Tasmania next January.

Girls League Tag
Three teams from Forster Campus participated in the CRL schools gala day for girls league tag on
Wednesday 12 June. The girls were excited to be playing representing Forster Campus.
Our 16 years girls team were runners up on the day after going down to St Clair ’s Taree. There
were some fantastic runs from Brooke Horvath and Indi Cooper with great efforts from all other
girls.
The Year 8 girls played a tough game against
Chatham High with a conversion the only
difference between the teams. Indi Maher
provided great direction as half back whilst Lucy
Pither used her speed to break the line
numerous times.
The Year 7 team was relatively inexperienced
and showed the greatest improvement over the
day. Superbly led by Sophie Blomgren who was
named as Player of the Day runner-up. The girls
had stacks of fun and hope to further develop
their skills over the next 12 months and take
out the title in 2020.

Rugby Union – Waratah Cup Finals
On Tuesday 18 June, Great Lakes College
students travelled to Kempsey to compete in the
Waratah Cup Rugby Union Finals. With lots of
big hits, evasive runs and strategic play, our
teams were gallant in their efforts to compete
against the Port Macquarie and Kempsey
Catholic schools. From first timers to Rugby
League and League Tag players adapting their
skills and even 1 regular rugby union player, our
students represented the college with respect
and outstanding sportsmanship. Despite not
advancing through to the next stage, our teams
had fun, learned while playing and kept smiling
throughout the entire day. At the end of the day,
coaches polled their team asking for a Players
Player. In the Under 14s girls team the award
went to Gabby Edwards from Forster Campus.
The under 14s boys award was shared between
Hamish Wilson and Jacob Earl both from
Tuncurry Campus and in the Under 16s girls
division, the player who polled the most votes
was Laura Wilson, also from Tuncurry Campus.
A huge congratulations to all involved!

One College – Unlimited Opportunities Third Time, Not Quite So Lucky
Great Lakes College’s all conquering boy’s tennis
team fell agonisingly close to a third straight
Hunter Regional title last week. As well as being
Hunter champions, the boys finished third in the
state at last year’s State Finals
The new look team of Sam Gibson & Eli Worldon,
both of Year 12 plus Nicolai Nash & Aiden Monk
both from Year 9 at Tuncurry Campus, had cruised
through the early rounds to qualify for the last
eight.
The finals day was played at District Park,
Broadmeadow. Our boys easily defeated Morisset
High in their quarter final, then eased past
Tomaree High in their semi-final. In the semi-final
the boys won all 4 of their singles sets.
The final against Lambton High was played
immediately after the semi-final. Sam & Eli won
their doubles in a highly entertaining & skilful set.
During the singles, Lambton took the lead overall
& went on to win in a tight contest.
The level of tennis from both teams was very high
& was appreciated by all those who watched it.
Sam & Eli have been part of a wonderfully
successful time in boy’s tennis at GLC & I’d like to
thank them for their huge efforts and
sportsmanship throughout. Nicolai and Aiden
should form the basis of a solid tennis team next
year.

Hand Ball Competition
The SRC conducted the start
of the handball comp in week
4; where student’s of Great
Lakes College Senior Campus
participated until week 7.
The SRC paired over 50 students and teachers to
compete against each other in a 1v1 handball
rally. We took gold coin donations and raised a
sum of $105 which went to the funds of the SRC
and contributed to the prizes of both female
winner and male winner, Cooper Sweeney and
Taleka Gilles.
There was a great display of comradery between
students and definitely a competitive nature
between staff and student matches. The handball
competition is an annual event the SRC will
continue to run.

students from the Physical Activity and Sports
Studies and Child studies electives volunteer to
help out at the Forster Primary School athletics
carnival. They assisted the primary school
teachers with jobs including timekeeping for the
track events, helping out with the K-1 running
relays and measured distances in the field
events. With many commendations from the
primary school staff and lots of high fives from
the K-6 students, our students were highly
appreciated in their efforts. Future participation
in events like this are currently being negotiated
as it was of great benefit to all involved.

The Tuncurry Campus debating team consisting
of 1st speaker, Yvette Piscopo, 2nd speaker, Huon
Campbell-Ellis, 3rd speaker, Luke Maher and team
adviser Emily Cooper have had the experience of
participating in several debates over the exam
week.
We participated in the Taree and District
Eisteddfod where we made it to the final in which
we were up against St Clares High School, Taree.
Our topic for this debate was that “Education is
the key to success.” There was a selection
between two dictionaries with both affirmative
and negative written in them and we received
affirmative.
We argued about how everything we see around
us has had some form of education put into it,
whether it was a building that an engineer had to
work on, or a chair that an upholsterer made,
and that humans were the superior species
because of formalised education.
This was a great debate and the closest one
we’ve had so far.
We also debated in the Premier’s Debating
Challenge (a statewide comp) against Westport
College where we hosted the event and had the
Year 7 TEC class as an audience. Our topic for this
debate was that “All under 12s sporting teams
should be mixed.” This time, we were negative
for this debate and had to spend a lot of time
rebutting. It was also another great debate and
we came out successful, advancing on to the next
round in week 9 this term. Eisteddfod champions
and a few very good debates that we all gained a
lot of experience from and we can’t wait to see
what our next debates hold for us!

Change of sport procedure @ Tuncurry Campus
There have been some changes to the process of sport choices for Years 9 and 10 at Great Lakes
College Tuncurry Campus in an attempt to improve practices and create fair and equitable
opportunities for all students.
From Term 3 2019 onwards, the sport note for each student in Years 9 and 10 will be signed by their
parent/caregiver and then returned to Mr Ieroianni in the PDHPE staffroom in the first 15 minutes
of recess daily until Wednesday 19 June 2019. Notes will not be accepted after this date.
Students who fail to make a sport selection will be placed in a school based sport. Choosing a sport to leave the school is a privilege; therefore any students of concern at school may be precluded from their chosen sport. Additionally, those students who misbehave whilst at sport will be dealt with through the school discipline policy.
Students with outstanding sport fees will not be permitted to choose a paying sport until these fees
are finalised. Payment plans can be discussed with Mr Ieroianni prior to 19 June 2019.
Students are encouraged to choose their sport wisely as NO changes to sport selections will be made unless supported by a medical certificate. Please note some activities have a minimum and maximum capacity and therefore not all sports may run due to low numbers. Students who select these sports will need to choose again.
Once all notes have been submitted, sports will be assigned and then payments are able to be
processed from 24 June 2019 until 28 June 2019. It is not until both the note and the payment are
received that a guaranteed place is attained.
It is important that online payments not be made until your child/ward has been confirmed in a
sport. It is also important that paying online does not constitute a note and therefore your student
will not be accepted into the sport of their choice.
When paying through the parent portal please include the sport your student is paying for to enable
office staff to receipt correctly e.g. tenpin or gym (non member).
Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school during
business hours.

Taste of TAFE day
40 students from Great Lakes College attended
the Taste of TAFE day. Students were invited to a
day at Taree TAFE to experience a sample of the
courses on offer. These included hair and beauty,
IT, early childcare, engineering, horticulture
and automotive.
Students had really positive feedback about the
day and were involved in practical activities
including potting a plant, designing a fingernail,
creating a Ethernet cable and making a metal
spatula.
The discussion forum, at the end of the
session, had guest speakers from Great Lakes
Council, TAFE, Department of Industry and
Charles Sturt University. A question and answer
forum was hosted by representatives from each
location to explain to students how life going
to TAFE leads to job opportunities or further
study at university.
It was a nice way for students to see how
apprenticeships are connected to TAFE, and to
understand that there is opportunity to integrate
a pathway with university in nursing or social
work for example. It was a great opportunity for
students to explore the TAFE campus and work in
classrooms with one to one access to TAFE
teachers.
A really positive community engagement activity
for students thinking TAFE, university study
integration and/ or a skills based career is a
possible future plan. While at the same
time reminding them that there are multiple
pathways to achieve success in their lives.

Future Moves Day Year 10
Future Moves has grown from CSU's commitment
to lift participation in higher education by students
from regional areas and disadvantaged
backgrounds.
It is a program for school students who have the
potential to succeed at university but may come
from families with little or no experience of higher
education. Future Moves introduces them to the
world of university study; communicates the
benefits of higher education and addresses
perceived barriers. This encourages students to
become more confident in considering tertiary
study as a realistic option for their future.
Future Moves aims to:
lift aspiration for university study;
introduce the idea of a career and lifelong learning;
raise awareness of post school options;
demonstrate pathways and options;
increase students' educational attainment whilst at school and
engage with parents to help them support their children in their post-secondary choices.
A few students expressed their opinion in an
interview about the Future Moves Day seminar.
Check it out on the Careers Facebook Page and the
Great Lakes College Facebook Page.

Update on Canteen Activities
The P&C is currently preparing to implement the
NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, developed
by both the NSW Department of Education and the
NSW Ministry of Health. The strategy is to be
implemented by the end of this year and requires
that our canteen menu provides at least
three-quarters EVERYDAY food and drinks and no
more than one-quarter OCCASIONAL food and
drinks.
To meet these requirements the P&C Canteen
Committee, consisting of our Treasurer
Lee Caithness and Canteen Convener Lesley
Campbell, have been working hard with our
Canteen Managers Ros and Belinda to develop our
new menus. Work has first started with the senior
campus canteen, which has included engaging with
the Student Representative Council for thoughts
on what they believe the student body would like
on the menu. The changes will see more fresh
food being prepared in the canteen.
The committee will be implementing changes to
the menus throughout the remainder of this year,
in preparation for meeting the Healthy School
Canteen Strategy at the start of the 2020 school
year.
The P&C's only source of funds to support College activities is the profits
generated by the canteens. Volunteers working in the canteens is critical
in helping the P&C generating these profits and any help from the parent
body is greatly appreciated.
Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 3rd July, 6:30pm @ Tuncurry Campus Library
All parents are invited to attend these meetings
to learn what is happening within the college.
Meetings consist of a debrief from the college/
campus principals of what has happened since
the last meeting and what is planned in the
future, as well as special topic of discussion for
the meeting. It is a forum for positive
engagement between key stakeholders in the
College. An outcome of the March meeting,
which discussed the Elevate Program that was
conducted at the Forster campus prior to the
meeting, is the upcoming implementation of the
elevate program on the Tuncurry Campus. This
being due to the significant positive commentary
from Forster campus parents who attended the
meeting and the responsiveness of Paul
Rosenbaum, Tuncurry Campus Principal, in
sourcing this program. The elevate program has
a session for parents on the evening
of Wednesday 26 June which is very highly
recommended for all parent to attend, please
see information to be sent out shortly from the
college for more information.
