Page 2: The discovery of vaccination

In the 18th century, a terrible disease called smallpox killed 10% of the population every year. It killed men, women and children. It killed rich people and poor people. It killed kings and queens.

Smaalpox killed without distinction among religion or or class or race!

What was smallpox? What did Edward Jenner discover?

In 1976, Edward Jenner was a doctor. He worked in a small village in England.

Hello Sarah,

what’s the matter?

I’ve got a headache

and lots of spots. I

think I’ve got

smallpox.

Page 4: The discovery of vaccination

Where do you

work?

I work on a farm. I milk the cows.

Have the cows got

spots? Yes, they have.

Page 5: The discovery of vaccination

Don’t worry, Sarah. You haven’t got

smallpox. You’ve have cowpox. Isn’t a serious

disease. It

Page 6: The discovery of vaccination

Jenner noticed that people who got cowpox didn’t get smallpox.

Perhaps cowpox

protects people from smallpox. Bit how can I

prove it?

Page 7: The discovery of vaccination

Jenner asked a boy from the village to do an experiment with him. He rubbed pus from one of Sarah’s spots into a scracth on the boy’s arm.

Four days later…

When did it start?

I’ve got headache

doctor. I’ve got a fever and

lots of spots.

Yesterday

Don’t worry. You’ve got coxpox. It

isn’t serious,

Page 9: The discovery of vaccination

In the second part of the experiment, Jenner rubbed pus from a smallpox patient into a scratch on the boy’s arm.

I don’t want to get

smallpox. Don’t worry.

Page 10: The discovery of vaccination

I haven’t got spots or any symptoms of

smallpox.

This proves that cowpox

protcts people from

smallpox.

Page 11: The discovery of vaccination

Jenner repeated the experiment with many people. He always got the same result.

The word for cow in Latin is vacca…

…So I call this

treatment vaccination.

Do you know…?

The last case of smallpox

was in 1977.

Page 12: The discovery of vaccination

Doctors continued to use and develop Jenner’s vaccination theories. Today there aren’t any cases of smallpox in the world, and vaccination is used againts many other diseases.

As you know, inventors have a problem and they think about a solution for it.

Think about some problems that you have and rise your hand to share with you partners.

How can you solve them?Write them down.Make groups of four and

decide a problem and a possible solution (hypothesys).

Now is your turn…
