National MDC Conference
This year’s National MDC Conference was
held on Thursday Island (TI), in northern
Australia. You may not know that we
setup the National Network which has now
grown to 13 MDC’s across Australia.
It was a fantastic opportunity to share our
successes and areas we can improve.
Unfortunately some of our MDC’s are
experiencing some difficult times. Let’s
hope all the MDC’s are supported for the
very important work that they do.
Tim Hillier, from TI, is very interested in
our interactive models and our recent
website games. It is likely he’ll visit us next
year with the strong possibility that we will
be doing a number of projects with him.
Delegates checking out some of the facilities at TI
Each centre gave a presentation about
their past year’s work. Warren Bridge
from Port Macquarie’s MDC spoke
passionately about his programs, including
2 new Interactive models which our MDC
developed for him.
Warren highlights his year to the group
National Coast-to-Coast
Conference
The National Coast-to-Coast Conference, being held in Mandura, WA, is an important bi-annual
event, many of our important sponsors will be there including the EPA. We’ve actually provided
information and ideas to support their presentation about working with local Aboriginal Groups.
We are working closely with the EPA to develop an outstanding learning station which promotes
“caring for our catchments”, coastal signage, education workshops and Kaurna initiatives.
Both Linda-Marie McDowall and Peter Pfennig gave excellent presentations and both mentioned
the Marine Discovery Centre.
Adelaide Airport launch
The new Airport Plans were recently announced and we were very grateful to be invited. The
Adelaide Airport has kindly sponsored our local coastal signs for the past 3 years. Their bold,
innovative plans are very exciting for Adelaide.
Highlights included a speech by Adelaide Crows Chairman Rob Chapman
More Trachyandra divaricata
found in our dunes!
Once again our Dune Care Group has discovered this insidious weed which can very quickly
take-over dunal systems and cost thousands of dollars! This time it was Garry Griffiths, NRM
Officer for the City of Charles Sturt who made the discovery.

along rather slowly on their short legs.
Penguins eat three main foods: fish, squid
