Basil Rathbone is most widely recognized for his many portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, starting with The Hound of Baskervilles.

The film was so successful that it spawned a series. Fourteen feature films were made between 1939 and 1946, all of which co-starred Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.

The first two films, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (both produced by 20th Century Fox in 1939), were set in the late Victorian times of the original stories.

Later installments, produced by Universal Pictures, were set in contemporary times, and some had World War II-related plots.

Rathbone and Bruce also reprised their film roles in a radio series, The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which began in October 1939.

The Hound of the Baskervilles was produced in 1939 by 20th Century Fox.

It was based on the novel by Sir Arthur ConanDoyle, involving the curse of the

Baskerville family.

Since the studio had no idea the film would be so popular, top billing went to Richard Greene, who was the film's romantic lead.
