ABSTRACT
Shofwan, H. Afif. 2015. The Difference of Speaking Ability Between the Eight
grade Students Living in Islamic Boarding School and Not Living in
Boarding School of Mts Sunan Prawoto In Academic Year 2014/2015.
Skripsi.English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education

Key words: Speaking ability, Boarding student, Non boarding student
English is a foreign language in Indonesia. So, it becomes one of the
subjects in teaching and learning process. And also it is one of the materials taught
in MtsSunanPrawotoSukoliloPati, an Islamic junior high school in Pati. The
location is in KH HASYIM Street, Prawoto, Sukolilo, Pati. Most of the students
of MTs SunanPrawotoSukoliloPati lived at home with their parents. And the other
stay in Islamic boarding school provided by the school. For the Students who live
at home with their parents, they get more attention and guidance from their
parents. Because, it is the obligation of the parent to their children. But, some of
them decided to stay in Islamic boarding school. The condition in the field shows that there is a slight difference in the achievement of both students in general.
Therefore, the writer would like to know more specific whether there is any
difference in their English achievement, especially in speaking.
The objective of this research is to find out if there is any significant
difference of English speaking ability between boarding and non-boarding school
of the eighth grade students of MTs Sunan Prawoto Sukolilo Pati in academic year
2014/2015.
This research is an ex-post facto research. The population of this research
was all of the tenth grade students of Mts.SunanPrawoto in academic year
2014/2015.The number of sample is 30 students which are taken by cluster
random sampling. The writer took 15 boarding students and 15 non boarding
students. The instrument used in this research is spoken test. .
The result of this research can be seen from the mean of the of the
boarding students 46.53 and SD at 8.17. While the mean of the non-boarding
students is 81.5 and SD is 8.11. Hypothesis testing in the level of significance
0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 34, the t-observation (t0) at 7.36 and t-table (tt) at
2.042, the t-observation is higher than t-table (t0 = 19.29>tt= 2.042). Therefore,
the writer concludes that there is a significant difference of the speaking ability of
the boarding school students and non-boarding students of the eight grade students
of Mts. SunanPrawoto in academic year 2014/ 2015.
Thus, the writer suggests that the teachers can give more motivation and
assistance to the boarding school students in order to help them in catching up
with the lesson.

Sunan
Prawoto Pati, salah satu Mts.
