The Importance of Education and Training

• “I will not sacrifice the core investments that we need to grow and create jobs. We will invest in medical research. We will invest in clean energy technology. We will invest in new roads and airports and broadband access. We will invest in education. We will invest in job training. We will do what we need to do to compete, and we will win the future.”

• Many of us would agree that education and training are very important keys to our future--the work doesn't get done without an educated and trained workforce.

• So what's the difference between education and training?

Education and Training

An Example

• Let’s say I want to build a mouse trap. Plans are available online – simple.

• There’s even a mouse trap academy (MTA) that offers a vocational certificate in mouse trap building.

• Enrollment requirements include: a- Ability to read English at a 7th grade level

b- Ability to perform basic math: addition/subtraction, multiplication and division

c- Ability to write English at a 7th grade level

d- Ability to speak English (you choose a grade level)

e- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

An Example

• These are competencies that are typically acquired in a classroom environment.

• Luckily, I meet all the basic requirements and enroll at MTA. The MTA curriculum, classroom and lab activities prepare me to become a certified mouse trap builder.

• MTA instructors train me in the methods and techniques required to build mouse traps.

• Under their supervision, I actively participate in learning a set of skills: reading blueprints, developing cost estimates, preparing quotes and selecting materials.

• I learn how to measure, cut and assemble the various components that make up a mousetrap.

An Example

• During the course of my education and training, my teachers and trainers will periodically create a test for me.

• They may call it a quiz, test, exam, assessment or paper – whatever they choose to call it and whichever exam software they may use, it’s their attempt to figure out whether or not I’m “getting it”, and how well and how much is actually sticking and forming the necessary neural connections.
