THE DEWSON DIGEST
MARCH, 2017
Selon le calendrier Chinois, l’année 2017 est l’année du Coq de Feu.
Pour les chinois, l’année 2017 semble être une période consacrée à la
recherche du progrès, de l’honneur et d’une grande intégrité.

SALLE 314
Students from salle 314 used their questioning skills to learn about a community in the east end of Toronto . They used photos and documents from the Toronto ar-chives to discover how the community had changed over the years, as well as what had remained the same . This is one of the many interesting field trips grade 6 students have been on recently.

In the month of February, our class made melted crayon hearts for Valentine’s Day that we put on the windows of the classroom. The Grade 5 and 6 students went on a ski trip to Snow Valley and Earl Bales. We also started a project in Social Studies about immigrants coming to Canada. We are in the process of doing a French project about l’imperatif. We also did an English project about writing a persuasive letter to certain people of Ontario. We are going on a trip to see Puss ‘n Boots in French at the Cinéfranco. For Valentine’s Day we did activities such as decorating the class and
making boxes for Valentine cards. We recently finished a book called OC Daniel. The Grade 6 students recently finished a science project on How to Make/Wire a Circuit. In math, each student made a poster about what they learned in Geometry. The Grade 6 students are currently practising for EQAO which is written at the end of May. In Social Studies, the Grade 6 students did a group project on the Aboriginal People in Canada. They also did a presentation with their group in front of the Grade 6 stu-dents of the class. We also did a project in French on writing a scary story that we presented in front of the class. The Grade 6 students of every class go to the library every month to work on their initiative on Mindfulness.

Our class went to the Kortright Center to learn about maple syrup and
how it was made.
When we got there, we went on a hike to learn about animals and their
senses, we played memory games to learn about how squirrels hide their
food, and we played hearing games to learn about deer and frogs. We
even saw a dead rabbit (Poor bunny).
After lunch, we went on a tour to see the maple trees and learn how First
Nations and pioneers made syrup out of maple tree sap. Finally we got to
taste the best maple syrup we ever had!
On the way back the bus ride was long, but we saw a pink lamborghini
so it was all worth it!

ROOM 102
We have been exploring Andy Goldsworthy’s art and experimenting with creating pieces of our own using symmetry.
We have worked both indoors and outdoors, and during our visits to Dufferin Grove Park.
We created this art by using natural materials, found materials and classroom manipulatives. We also used mirrors and
miras to create drawings with symmetry. We looked for symmetry and documented what we found.
We documented our creations with Pic Collage to demonstrate our learning. We picked the pic-
tures that represented our Andy Goldsworthy inspired art, and then we drew the line of sym-
metry on our picture using the drawing app. We wrote our names and a couple of quotes describ-
ing what we had done and how we knew we had used symmetry in our creations.
In class, we did a cooking project where each of us was put in a group to cook or bake
something in front of the class. We learned a lot about how to make food. The most
challenging part of our project was that we had to use l’impératif (giving orders and ad-
vice) at all times. We had to make sure all the verbs we used to explain the cooking pro-
cess were in the imperative form.
One group put on fake beards and weird aprons so it would look like they were parents.
The food we made was really good. Our favourite thing we made was the jam tarts. Alt-
hough we had to clean the class, everyone enjoyed it.
This project was a fun experience for all of us as we could eat yummy food and learn in
French at the same time. We learned lots of new food recipes and new ways of making
what we already knew how to make.

Students in Room 110 went skating several times this winter. As well, visiting art-
ists taught students how to create animal masks through recycled material. Stu-
dents then used these masks to create and perform a play.
Mr. Smaller, Riley's father, came to class to explain to students the life cycle of the
apple tree. Students got to drink homemade apple cider and enjoyed eating apples.
They each got the chance to plant their own apple trees to take home.

Room 111 integrated art and math by making self-portraits that used sym-
metry. Here is the procedural text written by Audrey Wine on how to do it.
How Room 111 Made the Symmetry Art
Take a photo, print it, then cut it in half and glue it onto a piece of paper.
Take a ruler and measure where you are going to put your matching face
across from the photo.
Draw your face with pencil crayons. Then you’re done.
Room 111 also had a two week workshop on calligraphy and typography with a
visiting artist. Here is a report written by Sarah Abai about the workshop.
On Monday, a lady named Carolina came to our class. The first thing we
learned was how to do ink letters and this is how we did it. First, we got
white foam, and with a sharp pencil or pen we stabbed the foam into back-
ward letter shapes, like for example, “A.” When it was done, we cut the let-
ters into squares, got our markers out and started colouring all the letters.
Then we opened up these books that she gave us and pressed the now-
coloured foam letters onto the page and when you do the outline of the let-
ter appears the right way!

On a dis-

The Grade 1's in Salle 211
worked very hard in science
class to design and build a
boat. They worked in groups
using excellent teamwork skills
and remembered what they
had learned about different
materials when selecting the
materials for their boat. All of
our amazing boats survived the
float test!

SALLE 314 ART GALLERY TRIP
Students from salle 314 went on a field trip to the AGO. They learned about Francophone culture through the visual arts with an instructor from the gal-lery. Afterwards the class broke up into small groups and explored the many interesting exhibitions on at the AGO.

Room 201 was working on a big animal unit from January - March break. We dis-
cussed different animals, their habitats, camouflage, the foods they eat, etc.
We finished off our unit with a visit from Scientist in the Schools that talked all
about the different habitats of animals, and then we did murals in groups where
the children painted habitats for animals that we had cut out of magazines and
calendars. The pictures are from the Scientist in the School visit where they ro-
tated between 5 groups where they did different activities, from sorting, to
looking at animals paw prints, to seeing the habitats of land and sea animals, ani-
mals that live underground, and animals that live in trees.
