- 3 - Dear Friends, I have just been for a walk with Alfie and oh goodness how beautiful

everything is! The limey green of the trees and the verges dripping with

new grass and burgeoning cow parsley. The skylarks singing way up

beyond sight, the fresh new crops just beginning to whisper in the breeze; and holding all this fecundity, the chalk downs, ancient, majestic, beyond time. Old as the sea they

go way back to a time when the earth was formed and they will be here centuries after

we are gone; just thinking about this makes me feel very small and makes the things I worry about seem very trivial. As is often the case when confronted by such

awe-inspiring beauty I turn to poetry to voice what I cannot, like Gerard Manley Hopkins who sees the natural world shot through with the divine: The world is

charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil; It

gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil/Crushed. Whether you subscribe to the notion of God or not at some point or another all of

us experience a sense of smallness, of being part of something much bigger than our-

selves. An old French prayer sees it this way: O lord, your ocean is so great and my boat is so small. Reflecting on the 15th century Indian mystic and poet Kabir’s work

Roger Housden writes: ‘This making love with the divine, this plunging into truth, requires what human love does – a falling away of your defences, a recognition of

your vulnerability, a willingness to acknowledge that you are on the wave of an ocean

far bigger than you are. Yet in the same moment that you cry ‘yes!’ to the immensity of life, you share its power and beauty. You are both everything and nothing. This is the

great ocean that Kabir is urging you to experience, the ocean of Life that bore you

into existence in the first place.’ What a profound description of transcendence, of the sense of the ‘other’ that often takes our breath away. To turn to Hopkins once again:

And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights off the black West went

Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs — Because the Holy Ghost over the bent

World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings. Next time I write the crops will be taller, the grass higher; nothing ever stays the

same, such is the nature of life. The earth will continue to turn, the seasons will roll on and we will go about our daily lives. Let’s hope that now and again we take time to

reflect on our place in it all. With love and prayers, Pauline

Nature Notes Yesterday afternoon I had a lovely walk from the farm,

Broomclose, back to my house. It was a lovely sunny day, a bit

windy but not quite as warm as it had been.

I started by crossing the field, which was full of lush grass, to join the lane which goes up to the beeches. The lane was full of bluebells, red

campion and greater stitchwort. There were foxgloves coming and primroses that

had gone over. The wild cherry trees were covered in blossom. Once at the bottom of the beeches I had to make a decision; go straight up to the wood above

Shearwater, or turn right going to the church. I went a little way along the track to the church to take in the beautiful display of bluebells, once again accompanied by

red campion and greater stitchwort.

I retraced my steps and started to go up under the beeches. The trees themselves were looking splendid, despite their age (believed to have been planted in 1791);

dressed in lush new leaves of a delicate shade of green. Under the beeches there

were violets, carpets of them in some places, together with bluebells and also gorse. The gorse was in flower, a vibrant yellow with the smell of coconut. As I

walked up under the beeches I became aware of a pair of roe deer in the field to my left, a doe and buck. They just stood and watched me. Further up in the same field I

spotted a hare, the first I’d seen for a long time. When I passed a couple of dead

trees, I heard the sound of young birds being fed in a nest and stopped to see if I could spy an adult leaving; sure enough it was a corvid. A big butterfly flew around

me and eventually landed on my trouser leg; a peacock that had overwintered, the

wings were decidedly tatty. Once in the wood I turned right towards Foxholes. The wood was carpeted with

bluebells, there were foxgloves coming up so in a month or so the wood will change colour from blue to purple. Walking on I

snapped twigs and rustled leaves which disturbed a muntjac; it

barked an alarm and ran off, its tail in the air barking several more times. Nearer Foxholes I heard ravens up in the conifers possibly

with a nest of young. Numerous times I heard black caps singing but each time failed to spot the actual bird, due to them singing from deep cover and the growth

on the trees and bushes is now so lush. I also heard chiffchaffs and siskins.

At Foxholes I walked along the old road to the A350 and carefully crossed to the church side. I cut through the churchyard and noticed lots of cuckoo flowers

growing in amongst the graves. (I’ve yet to hear a cuckoo this year). Passing along

the lane by the village hall I suddenly heard screams above me, swifts, quite a few, probably ten or so. I had seen swifts in town on Thursday 12th and on the 2nd

May I spotted them at Wilton. Finally, we have house martins back in the artificial nests at the front of the

house, first seen at the box on the 29th April. The swallows are also back; one flew

out of the stables on the 13th April and by the 28th there was a pair in situ.

Recipe - Chicken and bacon lattice pie Preparation time : half to 1 hour. Cooking time:1 to 2 hours

Serves 6 Shallow ovenproof dish 1.75ltr /3pt, 25cm/10in diameter

Ingredients 6 skinless chicken legs 4 celery sticks, diced

4 bay leaves, roughly sliced 200ml/7fl oz dry white wine

300ml/10fl oz chicken stock 250g/9oz smoked back bacon chopped 1 large onion, roughly chopped 50g/1¾oz butter

60g/2¼oz plain flour 2 tbsp full-fat crème fraîche 1 tbsp grainy mustard 2 x 375g packets puff pastry

1 egg, beaten salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Preheat the oven to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3. Put the chicken legs, celery and bay

leaves into a large ovenproof pan, pour over wine and stock, season with salt and

pepper. Bring to boil cover and transfer to oven for 30–40 minutes until chicken is cooked. Once cool, remove meat from bones. The bones can be reserved and used for

a stock. Break the meat into bite-sized pieces. Strain the stock, reserve celery and measure out the liquid about 750ml/1 pint / 6fl oz; make up amount with stock or

white wine. Fry bacon pieces for 3 minutes, add onion, cover and fry for a further 10

minutes. Add butter, sprinkle in flour to make a roux. Pour reserved liquid into the roux, a little at a time, whisking over a high heat until thickened to a smooth sauce

consistency. Season, add reserved celery, crème fraiche and mustard, mix before

adding chicken pieces. Spoon filling into the ovenproof dish and level the top. Leave until cool, chill covered in the fridge for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare pastry.

Lightly flour work surface, roll out each pastry sheet to about 3mm/⅛in thick. Cut each piece into long, thick ribbons, about 3cm/1¼in wide. Enough to cover the top of

the dish, about 16 in total. Weave ribbons together on a piece of baking paper, until

you have a pastry top that is large enough to cover your pie. Chill in fridge for 15 minutes to firm up or freeze. Take the filling out of fridge, brush edges of dish with a

little beaten egg. Carefully slide pastry lattice from the baking paper and lay on top of chilled filling. Trim the excess pastry around the rim and lightly press to seal.

Increase oven temperature to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Brush pastry with beaten egg

and bake for 30 minutes until pastry is golden and cooked through and chicken bubbling. Serve hot.

Brixton Deverill Broadband As residents know Brixton Deverill is now the one ‘not spot’ in the Deverill Valley without a reasonable broadband service. In the last month Andrew

Murrison MP has added to our representations to Wiltshire Council and we

have engaged in correspondence with them. In addition a high proportion of Brixton Deverill residents have expressed their disappointment to Wiltshire Council about

their failure to honour what had seemed to be a clear commitment to include Brixton

Deverill alongside Kingston and Monkton Deverill in the upgrading roll out. We are grateful to everyone who took the time to contact the local councillor and our MP.

However, despite this Wiltshire Council continue to ignore requests for a meeting. On 11th May the Upper Deverills Parish Council considered a full update and agreed that

we should continue to try to make headway with the Council particularly as during

the coming month they will be allocating money released by BT as part of a gain sharing arrangement. These funds have been generated by greater uptake than

expected in previous phases of the Council roll out. The BAG is also actively

exploring other options to secure an improved service. Brixton Deverill residents are being kept in touch with more details through emails.

Wiltshire Sight Due to Wiltshire Sight’s innovative work they have pioneered a

new service which will revolutionise the lives of people with sight loss within the health and social care system. Firstly, working with

care homes and now developing the Looking Out For Sight project into domiciliary

care, the Wiltshire charity is able to reach a greater number of people living with sight loss. TPT research identified 50% of people living in care homes had high degrees of

sight loss. However, care home staff are not routinely trained in sight loss and the

support it requires. Wiltshire Sight aim to further pilot the service in the South West hoping to expand nationally within the next two years. The charity is currently

recruiting volunteer Sight Loss Ambassadors in Wiltshire to help deliver the training. For enquiries please write to [email protected] or call on 01380 723682.

Longbridge Deverill Parish Council The Annual Parish Council Meeting took place on Monday 9th May,

Councillor Richard Baxter was re-elected as Chair and Councillor

Graham Read re-elected as Vice Chair. The Chairman’s annual report

was read, which included the Parish Plan which is nearing public consultation and endorsement. Many planning applications had been reviewed, with the most

contentious being the chicken farm at Pickle Farm Industrial Estate, Sutton Veny.

Thanks were given to parishioners who make a positive contribution to Parish Life, in particular the growing number of supporters to the twice yearly litter pick and

thanks to Crockerton Village Committee and Longbridge Deverill Flower Show for planting the spring bulbs. This year has seen the replacement of two Parish notice

boards by the Council and grants awarded to Parish News, Parish Hall Committee

and Longbridge Deverill Flower Show, the event last year was a great success and it is hoped the success will be built on with this years’ event. Wiltshire Council is

promoting a policy of amalgamating small parish Councils to obtain economies of

scale and serve their communities more effectively, the Parish Council may wish to investigate this in the future.

The next Full Parish Council meeting will be on Monday 6th June at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. For the full minutes please see village notice boards or Parish web

site www.crockertonlongbridgeandhilldeverill.co.uk

Upper Deverills Parish Council Louise Stratton has stepped down from her role as Chair of the Upper

Deverills Parish Council after a long period in which she has steered the

proceedings of the Council with skill, charm and a light touch. The Council wishes to publicly express their thanks to Louise for all that she has

achieved during her very substantial period as Chair. She is a natural diplomat who is unfailingly patient and courteous; as such she set a very appropriate and correct

June commencing 1.00 pm in the church grounds and adjacent field.

games and fancy dress (medieval or royal) will be the order of the day. We will be entertained by the Widcombe Mummers from Bath with two

performances of St George & The Dragon. There will be 10 of them, performers

refreshment and strawberries will be freely available but please bring, share and cook your own BBQ on the stoves provided. There will be no charge but donations

welcome. We will need to know numbers, for tickets please call 841164 or 845335.

Friends of Deverill Churches

At their meeting on 19th May the Friends’ committee decided to pay off all the

final invoice in connection with the contract carried out, last year, to rectify the priority work identified by the 2014 Quinquennial inspections of the three Deverill

Valley churches. This brings the total amount donated to the PCC in the first year of the Friends' existence to £8,642 or 40% of the total net cost, an amazing

achievement for which the PCC and Church Wardens are very grateful. Without

this generous assistance we could not have financed all that had to be done to maintain our three beautiful and historic churches in a safe and weatherproof

condition. All those who have contributed to the Friends' appeal can rightly be

proud of the part they have played in making this possible. Thank you.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

As a means of raising funds for our churches we run a 50/50

Club open to all. The proceeds are divided with 50% being used to

support our four churches and the other 50% being used as prizes which are drawn each month. This year we will have given over

£1,000 in prizes and a similar amount to the churches and we are keen to recruit new members. By completing the form enclosed in this magazine you will be

included in the monthly draws. Please join now by using the enclosed form.
