Our approach to putting together this season’s issue was simple. Instead of forecasting a list of trends that may or may not be available in stores or online, we decided to provide an overview of the six most notable trends and make sure everything referenced is available for purchase. Right now. From Collegiate Prep to Color Blocking, the trends are as varied as those who wear them. We promise there’s something for everyone. Fashion is a lot of things, but it should never be stressful.

Here it is— the fall 2012 trend guideTHE DETAILSCREATIVE SERVICESTEAMdetailsinsider.com/collections

You don’t need a cabin in the woods

to feel an affinity for the season’s

most invigorating trend. From Fair

Isle to the Alps, designers turned

to the great outdoors for

inspiration. The collections ranged

from rugged to refined, with

Himalayan- and Native American–

inspired motifs threaded

throughout.

Stick with smaller-scale prints and up to three colors or you risk venturing into Cosby territory.

Terre d’Hermès is fit for the outdoorsman. The scent is the perfect aromatic combination of earth, air, and water.

Designers like to remind us there was a time when, despite what you did for a living, you were expected to dress like a gentleman. The Modern Gent is a mash-up of Gilded Age utilitarian and Gatsby opulence. Though not an especially difficult look to pull off, it does require a dose of British Dandy swagger.

This trend calls for accessories— specifically, hats. We still have your attention, a driving cap or a classic wide-brim fedora both work.

Nerds not only rule the world,

they rule the runway. Astute tailoring gives

this traditionally laid-back look a more grown-up appeal. The

combinations of unexpected layers with

dashes of bold color make basics like

denim and plaid somehow look

smarter.

Footwear can take this trend in different directions. For example, suede bucks evoke coun-try club prep while high-tops give a more street vibe.

The pack on your back isn’t just for school. Try a sleek back pack to carry your files in.

The easiest (and least expensive) way to adopt the look is with brightly colored or argyle patterned socks.

Color is like coffee: You hate it until you try it

and once you do— you’re hooked. Transcending the women’s

collections, Color Blocking is now

giving guys equal opportunity to

experiment with fashion. If you’re

feeling bold, grab your color wheel

and give these vivid combinations

a spin.

Confused? Combine warm (red, orange, yellow) and cool (green or blue) hues.

BILLY REID

“I spent some great time in Paris and London this past year and I enjoyed mixing those vibes into the collection, so there was definitely a sense of that throughout. I think fall saw an elegance for menswear, through luxe fabrics and an attention to hand tailoring.” —Billy Reid

READ WALL

“Colors are becoming subtler, with more brown and navy, mirroring what’s going on outside—leaves changing, the sun getting lower in the sky, football season starting—but the combination of colors and patterns is still fun and playful.” —Read Wall

GENERAL IDEA

“I think functionality was a key trend for fall. I was inspired a lot by archival images of hockey players from the 1968 Winter Olympics, so the look was very sporty, with a lot of practical elements.” —Bumsuk Choi

ALEJANDRO INGELMO

“For fall I really liked luxe materials used in an interesting, new way. I used fur for the first time this season, adding a long-hair beaver hide as a trim to our Josh hi-top leather sneaker for a fresh take on the style.” —Alejandro Ingelmo

SHIPLEY & HALMOS

“Fall is our favorite season. Sam hates the summer heat. Jeff’s Florida blood can’t handle the freezing winter. Fall lands comfortably in the middle.”

—Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos

MARLON GOBEL

“Things are getting very exciting in menswear, now more than ever. For the first time, there are no rules for guys to stick to. Except you look good, or you don’t! Giving every man the chance to be a ‘style icon’ and steal the attention in the room for a few minutes!”

—Marlon Gobel

RICHARD CHAI

“My inspiration for fall was the idea of the woods in an urban setting, such as NYC. This translated to a dark, moody color palette for the collection, which I think was a big trend for fall. Burgundy, specifically was a big standout this season.” —Richard Chai

Burgundy is having a moment.

The rich crimson hue set the tone at the

everywhere from subtle accents

to stunning statement pieces.

The best news? This universally

flattering trend is pretty much fool

that happen?

Nothing instantly

upgrades what you’re wearing like

fur—in small doses, that

is. Fur-lined outerwear is one of those

rare trends that actually fuses function with

fashion. From casual to polished,

there’s a fur- lined coat for
