DR GEORGE WHITFIELD KEMPER, JR.

Physician, Farmer, and Industrialist
Married Mary Angelina Brown, daughter of Bezaleel and
Elizabeth Michie Brown of Albemarle County, in 1838. She died
in 1855, and in 1858, he married Margaret Catharine Strayer,
daughter of Jacob and Adelaide Coffman Strayer.
Dr. Kemper not only practiced medicine, but was engaged
in farming He also operated a woolen mill, a foundry, and a
flour mill, all of which were destroyed by Union troops during
the Battle of Port Republic in 1862

"MADISON HALL,"
Located at the southern edge of Port Republic, Virginia, overlooking the
Shenandoah River, "Madison Hall" was originally owned by John Madison,
first Clerk of Augusta County, and was the boyhood home of his son, James
Madison, first Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Virginia, and for many years,
President of the College of William and Mary.
The original house, which was torn down in 1915, was a frame structure.
The interior was beautifully constructed with its delicately carved mantels
and woodwork. Of particular note were the "powder rooms, " one on each
side of the mantel in the living room. These were, no doubt, put to good use
in the days when powdered wigs were the fashion.
"Madison Hall" was purchased by Dr. George Whitfield Kemper, Sr. , in
1837. During the Battles of Port Republic and Cross Keys in June 1862, Gen¬
eral Stonewall Jackson had his headquarters there.
Prior to the death of Dr. George Whitfield Kemper, Sr. , in 1872, his son,
Dr. George Whitfield Kemper, Jr. , had moved to "Madison Hall" with his family.
He resided there until his death in 1902, at which time "Madison Hall" became
the property of his wife, Margaret Strayer Kemper, who continued to live there
with her son, Dr. Albert Strayer Kemper, and his family until 1908 when they
moved to "Bogota." Three generations of Dr, Kempers and four consecutive
generations of the family lived at "Madison Hall."

"Miss Lizzie" as she was affectionately known to her friends, and "Narnia” as she was called by her grandchildren, was a fine, Christian character, whose gentle and friendly disposition made her beloved by all who knew her. She was the ideal example of womanhood, the per¬ fect daughter, wife, and mother. Those who had the privilege of know¬ ing and being intimately associated with her through the years, will always be grateful for her influence and inspiration.
Mrs. Kemper made "Bogota" a meeca for all of her family and friends during the forty years she lived there, and even the most cas¬ ual acquaintance could not help but feel the sincerity of her welcome and leave with the uplifted feeling of having been in the presence of a lovely lady.
