Upcoming Dates

In May, Florida reached a verysignificant anniversary. We havebeen a Delta Kappa Gamma StateOrganization for 75 years. Itstarted my thinking about what ittakes, besides the passing ofyears, to reach such a milestone.

As in any relationship that islong-lasting, there are four keycharacteristics that make it workfor the long haul. I believe thatcommitment, mutual caring, communication, and maintenanceof a balance between tradition andchange are essential. Considerwith me how these qualities canstrengthen our chapters.

Over these last 75 years we’vehad many members who arecommitted to DKG. They haveworked in whatever spot they wereneeded. Many have hung onthough lean times in their chaptersto keep the light burning and tohelp them grow strong again. Mychallenge to you is to have thatsame commitment now.

Is membership in your chapterdeclining? It is time to reach outand initiate additional members.Consider holding more than oneinitiation in a year. Take advantageof the membership changes in ourinternational constitution which

gives your chapter more options. Now you can identify potentialmembers in their early years ofteaching as wellas retired educa-tors, who might add a new dimen-sion to your membership.

When members have to limittheir participation because ofsituations and responsibilities intheir personal lives, the caringresponse of chapter members canmake the difference in whether theycontinue or drop out. Expressionsof care by individual members, understanding the reason for lessinvolvement at the moment, volunteering for an extra chapterresponsibility are the caringresponses. When we demonstrateour caring, an added benefit is thata member is usually motivated toreturn to active participation, whenshe can.

How does your chapter commu-nicate? How often? It is hard tofeel commitment to a group if youfeel out of touch. It is exciting tosee how many chapters are usingweb sites and sending newsletterselectronically. These can beupdated easily, and the informationfor members is kept fresh. I’mhearing about more chapterprograms that have built-inopportunities for members to talk toone another. Do your membersknow one another well enough thatthey look forward to seeing friendsat meetings? How important thiswill be in keeping the communica-tion flowing! As our organization continuesto stay relevant in 2010 andbeyond, we have moved towardless formality in many ways. There

may be differing opinions on thesechanges but if we are to continuefor another 75 years, we need toexamine the “things we’ve alwaysdone” in the light of their value fortoday’s members. Have somediscussions about these in yourchapter. Is it a tradition that yourmembers want to continue, or is ittime for a change?

I challenge you to reflect withme on what we can do to keep ourorganization strong for another 75years.

Moving ForwardWith SPIRITand Vision

Regardless of my other assigned duties, I am always happy to be ofassistance to members of Mu State.

It has been a busy summer. The incoming district directors had theirplanning session, and materials were prepared for that meeting. DuringJuly, I attended the International Convention in Spokane. The InternationalExecutive Board met and as your Executive Secretary I am a non-votingmember. I have been getting materials ready for our Fall Workshop &Executive Board Meeting, checking email addresses and copying materials.

Stay in touch! Judith

Isn’t it terrific? Two chapters havealready made plans to visit our stateheadquarters this season, and sev-eral chapter presidents plan to dis-cuss this idea with their chapters. It’sgratifying to see this interest in ourhistoric house in downtown DeLand. If your chapter would like to visit, please contact me. I will not only putyou on the calendar, but will give youa tour of the facility and help you planthe rest of your day in our area.

Downtown DeLand is brimmingwith great things to do. You can strollthe Main Street, have lunch “alfresco,” take a walking tour of ourmurals depicting local history, visitone of the local museums or culturalarts center, or go antiquing—all withina couple of blocks! Or, consider in-cluding a side trip to one of our localsprings or taking a boat tour on theSt. Johns River.

I am ready to help you arrangeany—or all—of the above. Contactme at [email protected] call my cell at 386-748-8157. I lookforward to seeing you soon!

I must report that some members of the Leadership Committee experiencedwithdrawal symptoms as June 2010 came and went without the annual trek to Tampafor our labor of love, the Leadership Growth Seminar. It is now being held once eachbiennium. We missed the three-night “get away” to a nice hotel, the scrumptious food, and the time to learn, grow, and feel the pride of accomplishment that always comeswith seminar attendance. But most of all, we missed the chance to be together, pulling strength from one another, and forging new relationships with our Mu Statesisters.

Angie Williams, Chair, Mu State Leadership Growth Committee

We are more excited than ever to be back in the planning stages for next June’s seminar. As always, some things will change, but much will remain the same. One can expect to experience the same timeli-ness of topic, depth of content, and attention to detail for which we are well-known. If you are a chapterpresident, you are encouraged to attend during your term. Attendance is not limited to chapter presidents andofficers. All Mu State members are invited to apply. It will be one of the best experiences you’ve ever had!

The seminar will be held Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26, 2011, at the Tampa AirportMarriott. The cost is $150, and chapters are encouraged to pick-up the cost if officers are attending. Theapplication can be found on the Mu State website by clicking on the Leadership Chairman’s name. A word of advice—don’t delay your decision. We must receive your application no later than January 14,You wouldn’t want to miss this chance and have to wait another two years! Get your application in beforeothers beat you to it. (Note: Word has it that many submitted their applications at the Fall Workshop/Executive Board meeting. If you didn’t, do it now.)

Constitution Revisions - Implications for changes inMu State Bylaws and Standing Rules

The International Constitution/Standing Rules was revised. Manychanges provide increased flexibil-ity at the chapter level. A former member shall bereinstated in any chapter withoutthe vote of a chapter. Members may transfer to anychapter of their choice.

State organizations andchapters are responsible to interna-tional for the work of certaininternational committees* but havethe flexibility to decide, them-selves, how this is accomplished.

A reserve member, requestingsame, shall be restored to activemembership without a vote.

Other revisions included therestructuring of internationalcommittees into two categories;Society Business which includesCommunication and Publicity*,Constitution, Constitution Interpre-tation, Expansion, LeadershipDevelopment, Membership*

Finance* Nominations and Non-dues Revenue and Society Missionand Purposes includes EducationalExcellence*, Educator’s Award,Eunah Temple Holden LeadershipFund, Golden Gift Fund, Interna-tional Speakers Fund, Scholar-ship*, and World Fellowship*.

The Mu State ByLaws Commit-tee, under the leadership of ChairGerry Hacker, is reviewing theConstitution revisions, and sug-gested amendments to the MuState Bylaws and Standing Rules.

All state committees have beenasked to review the revisions to theInternational Constitution /StandingRules and make recommendationsas to how the Mu State Bylaws andStanding Rules should be changedto comply with specific require-ments and/or how to structurestate-level committees to addressthe work of certain internationalcommittees.

Any member may provideinput to the Bylaws Committeeand all Mu State committees arerequested to send suggestions forchanges to Gerry Hacker on orbefore November 1, 2010. Heremail is [email protected]

There is no longer the longestablished Program of WorkCommittee. The new EducationalExcellence Committee is organizedto function as a committee of thewhole or, at the discretion of thechair, in groups to accomplish itsresponsibilities for personal andprofessional growth. This commit-tee also promotes programs andprojects for excellence in educa-tion.
