Umiak I was built in 2006 at Universal
Shipbuilding Corporation in Maizuru Japan,
and is a 31,992 tonne icebreaking bulk
carrier, the most powerful ever of its kind.
The vessel moves 360,000 tonnes of nickel
concentrates a year in 12 voyages from
Voisey’s Bay mine in Northern Labrador to
Quebec City which is then transported to its
smelters in Sudbury, Ontario and
Thompson, Manitoba, Canada.
The Umiak I is 188.8 metres (619 ft) long
and has a beam of 26.6 metres (87 ft). Fully
laden, she draws 11.7 metres (38 ft) of water
and has a deadweight tonnage of 31,992
MT. She is designed for operations in Arctic
ice-infested waters and assigned ice class
ICE-15 by Det Norske Veritas, which is one
of the highest ICE notations any vessel can
have. Basically, this means the hull is
reinforced to navigate un-assisted through
ice that is 1.5 metres thick. This very
powerful and unique bulk carrier only uses
35 per cent of the available engine power on
the open, ice-free sea.
She is a bulk carrier designed to carry nickel
concentrate and has five holds with a
The Deck Log Newsletter of the Company of Master Mariners
of Canada NL Division

combined grain capacity of 40,490 cubic
metres. She is equipped with three cranes;
one 50-ton crane serving holds 1 and 2, and
two 30-ton cranes serving holds 3, 4 and 5.
In addition to bulk cargo, she can also carry
re-supply cargoes for the production
operations, including fuel oil. No 3 cargo
hold is only used to carry approx 7000
Metric cubes of arctic diesel for the mine
and during the winter months we fill it full
of ballast to help with icebreaking
operations.
The ship is powered by a seven-cylinder
MAN B&W-Hitachi 7S70ME-C low-speed
two-stroke diesel engine producing
21,770 kW (29,190 hp). The main engine is
coupled directly to a ducted controllable
pitch propeller. The variable pitch propeller
allows backing and ramming in heavy ice
conditions without reversing the engine and
the nozzle protects it from ice impacts and
provides additional thrust.
In open water, Umiak I can achieve a speed
of 13.5 knots with only 35% engine load. In
1.5 meter (5 ft) ice, she can maintain a speed
of 3 knots with the aid of a water deluge
system in the bow. For onboard electricity
generator, she is fitted with three six-
cylinder MAN B&W 6L23/30H generating
set.
The vessel was also on an episode of
Mighty Ships on The Discovery Channel in
2011.

Canadians were shocked by the murder of
two Canadian soldiers that took place in
Canada just recently. The Ottawa shooting
at the War Memorial killed Cpl. Nathan
Cirillo who was just 24 years of age. He was
a reservist based out of Hamilton, ON. The
other who was killed in St. Jean-sur-
Richelieu, Que was Warrant Office Patrice
Vincent. This was a blatant hit and run case.
This is Water Street by War Memorial. The
area was full of people unlike any other
year. Even Duckworth Street by the
Memorial was blocked with people.
It is believed due to these two murders
Canadians came out in droves to the War
Memorial to day to mark the Remembrance
Day.

Our last regular monthly meeting for 2014
was held at the Crow’s Nest Officers Club.
This meeting was an extremely successful
meeting as we had Mr. Gary Bishop, Chief

Today the CMMC provided relief for the 11
stranded crew members of the m/v Jana in
Argentia, NL. The NL Division collected
$1000.00 and this was matched by the
CMMC National making the total $2000.00.
Locally the Fish, Food and Allied Workers
(FFAW) are taking care of the 3 Russian and
8 Ukrainian crew members of the ship. The
ship has been stranded since early August
2014. The crew have not been paid and the
ship is running out of fuel, water and food.
Local groups are helping the crew while the
authorities are trying to find a solution.
The ship is only 12 years old and it is hoped
that a fair settlement may be found before
another prolonged delay.

Representative), Capt. McNeill (Treasurer of

One day after the presentation the case of
m/v Jana was settled very satisfactorily.
Some of the crew will be flying home while
a few others have decided to stay onboard to
help the new owners. FFAW informed the
CMMC that it was most kind of them to
make that financial contribution, however
that they did not need that money anymore.
It was decided that the contributors would
get their money back.
