Tennis

TENNIS TIP by Josh Vissman, USPTA Elite Professional

EQUIPMENT If you are a serious tennis player, you owe it to your game to pay attention to your equipment. Your racquet, strings, grip and shoes make a big difference. Let’s briefly discuss examples of how each of these pieces of equipment really makes a big difference.

RACQUET - The materials used in racquets generally start to break down and deliver less of the intended effect after about 2 years, so if you are playing with a 6 year old racquet then you may consider trying some new frames. Beyond this though, the most common racquet mistake I see is people that have a racquet too unstable and too light to support the full swing. A racquet that is too light will also cause more elbow problems than a heavy racquet. A racquet that is too light and unstable does not promote good mechanics and results in an abbreviated swing that resembles a poke more than a stroke. In light frames, the balance is head heavy. A head heavy balance is for a player that desires help generating ball speed, typically a Super Senior+ player. If you would like to understand the effects of racquet weight, stability and balance on your game, please see your Eagle Harbor professional.

STRING – Even the most resilient string has lost significant tension after a couple months. If you play a lot of tennis and have strings in your racquet that are 8 months old, you are probably wondering why the ball doesn’t feel as crisp as it used to and doesn’t hit the target as much as you feel it should. Additionally, your string should match your personal needs, whether it is comfort, power, durability, spin, etc.

GRIPS – Perhaps the most neglected area of equipment is the grip. Many people have a grip on the racquet for months or even years. When the grip starts to wear out it makes it increasingly difficult to find the proper grip. The proper grip is essential to the shot. With a new grip and your racquet will instantly feel much better!

SHOES – This category is similar to the grip although the downside of wearing shoes too long is the damage it does to your feet and body rather than merely shot execution. For a frequent player, after 4-6 months the support and padding in your shoes will be worn out but the outsole will still look great. Soft courts will not wear out the outsole so focus more on the feel of the shoes rather than glancing at the sole to determine when to replace your shoes.

GROUP FITNESS CLASSESGroup Fitness classes are designed and ide-al for beginners and athletes alike. Classes are held in the aerobics room located inside the Fitness Center and are free of charge. Fitness

FITNESS TIP – METABOLISM = CALORIES BURNED by Mike Blasser, Personal Trainer, SFN Your body doesn’t switch off even when you sleep. It’s constantly burning calories turning food, water, and oxygen into energy. This is your metabolism at work. This en-ergy keeps you alive. Your body also relies on your metabolism to store or burn fat. Now we’re talking weight control. Calories in and calories out. Metabolism can be broken down into 3 parts. Part 1: Calories you burn doing abso-lutely nothing. This is your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and is 75% of your daily calories burned (to calculate yours, search BMR). Part 2: The calories you burn to digest your food. This is known as Thermogenesis and is 10% of your daily calories burned. Part 3: The calories you burn doing any physical activity, this totals 15%. You have no control over your resting metabolic rate or how fast your body burns calories after eating. This is controlled by your genetics and age. You do have control over what you eat each day, your daily exercise program, and stress reduction. These can change your metabolism. Here are some easy changes you can make. Drink more water. Without it your meta-bolic rate slows down. Eat more protein. It takes the most calories to process, absorb and digest. Exercise more. Get the heart rate up by walking, running, or playing a sport. Build some muscle with weight training. All this raises your metabolism, burning calories for energy. The Harvard Health Publishing also says drinking 3 cups of green tea boosts your metabolism to burn a quick 100 calories. Finally reduce your stress. Stress creates glucose. If you’re always stressed, there will be too much glucose and the extra will turn into fat. Weight gain.

Whether it’s fast, slow, or average – Metabolism = Calories Burned

Cardio & Conditioning Low impact Aerobics/Band work/Abs & stretch.

Cardio & Strength Interval Training A high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class where you give all-out, 100% effort through quick, intense bursts of activity (30-60 sec), fol-lowed by short recovery periods (15-30 sec) before beginning another exercise in the set (e.g. jump rope, boxing, battle rope, spinning, push ups, weights, etc.). This type of diverse training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.

Strength, Spin & Stretch Class This class combines 20 minutes of strength training, 20 minutes of spinning, and 20 minutes of stretching into one well-rounded workout. This blend of cardio, strengthening and stretching exercises will raise your heart-rate, increase your flexibility, tone your core muscles
