Whether we comprehend or not, wemay trust that God is in control ofthese earthly events for the accomplish-ment of His purposes.

Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabit-ers of the earth!Revelation 9:5-6 And to them it

was given that they should not kill

them, but that they should be tor-mented ve months: and their tor-ment was as the torment of a scor-pion, when he striketh a man. Andin those days shall men seek death, and shall not nd it; and shall de-sire to die, and death shall ee fromthem.

For 150 years (ve propheticmonths) men were tormented tothe point that they despaired oflife, preferring death over the de-

struction from the scourge of theMohammedans, or Muslims. Thismust have been a terrible woe in-deed, as the angel said in verse 13of chapter 8 of Revelation.

Revelation 8:13 And I beheld, and heard an angel ying throughthe midst of heaven, saying with aloud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to theinhabiters of the earth by reasonof the other voices of the trumpetof the three angels, which are yetto sound!

So terrible was this woe thatthey desired to die. The life theyhad was no life at all. No peace, nocontentment, danger always lurk-ing around the next corner. Readyto be stung at any moment. Evendeath would be a release from theconstant stinging of the scorpions.

It sounds a lot like the life manyhave here today, without Godsprotective blessing and watch care.

If our Lord were not always onguard, continually overseeing usand keeping the devil and his evilminions at bay, without our heav-enly angels keeping their chargeover us, we would be like thesementioned in Revelation 9:5 and 6,desiring to die.

And is it not interesting to note

that it is again the Mohammedans,or Muslims, who are wreakinghavoc upon the people of the earthtoday. They have once again risenup as a scourge upon the land. I

believe it is given them to do thisnow, as much as it was over 700years ago.

Revelation 9:5 And to them itwas given. . . .

Verse 3 of this same chapter saysthe locusts were given power. . . .

Revelation 9:3 And there cameout of the smoke locusts upon theearth: and unto them was givenpower. . . .

When sin is what we want, whensin is our desire over righteous-ness, the Lord will ultimately giveus the desires of our hearts. We are

just too ignorant to know what weare really asking for. In Gods won-derful mercy, He keeps back thetrue awfulness of sin, for if not, wewould all perish. Yet again, in mer-

cy, He allows enough of sins resultsto come to us to help us see andrecognize the exceeding sinfulnessof sin, and its devastation.

Revelation 9:5 and 6 are but asmall snapshot of what life would

be like if Satan and sin had freereign. We would beg for death! All

joy, all happiness, all peace comesfrom above. We are being deceivedwhen we think sin is not so sinful

aer all. The ramications of a lifeof self-indulgence, a life of perpetu-ally thinking of our own pleasure, our own desires, of fullling ourown wills, is positively scary, andGod is trying to wake us up to theresults of such a course before it isforever too late.

To live for self is to live a life ofpresumption. We are presuming

that God will allow us to continuein that course. We presume uponGods mercy until nally, He has togive us up. We do not realize thatall the good that happens to us, allour joy, all our contentment, hascome from Him and not our sin-ful course. We have been blind-ed by sin!

Yet we still have in Jesus Christ,in the Father, in the Holy Spirit, such a friend, such a Lord, such a

guide, such a comforter, and suchtrue love, as we cannot imagine. Ifor one want to acknowledge thatI know where my good gis andwonderful life come from. I want torenounce sin and all its supposedpleasures.

Are you ready to make the sur-render now? You are to put awayyour sin right now when you see it.. . . Do not make leeway [that] youare going to overcome by degrees;you are going to try lile by lile to

give up sin. Now, while it is calledtoday, heed the invitation and hard-en not your hearts. UL 283

    I

n our ongoing study of thedaily, we have emphasizedthat our foundational under-

standing must not be basedupon mans words but upon thescriptures, in which we are shortlyto fully review several verses of the

book of Daniel. However, in 1888the Lord sent a most precious mes-sage of righteousness by faith to hischurch through two delegated mes-sengers known as A. T. Jones andE. J. Waggoner, who also gave talkson the three angels messages andthe sanctuary. Ellen White pub-licly endorsed Jones and Waggoner

over 100 times. Furthermore, Jonesnot only closely paralleled but alsoexpanded Crosiers position on thesanctuarythe same view thatEllen White had endorsed becausethe Lord had revealed to her thatCrosier had the true light on thesanctuary. As we have already seenearlier in this series, Ellen Whiterecommended that Crosiers articleon the sanctuary be given to everysaint. (For a copy of his booklet,

please visit our book store.) Belowis a sample of those public en-dorsements for the works of Jonesand Waggoner.

I would speak in warning tothose who have stood for years re-sisting light and cherishing the spir-it of opposition. How long will youhate and despise the messengers ofGods righteousness? TM 96.

I have no smooth message to bear to those who have been solong as false guideposts, point-

ing the wrong way. If you rejectChrists delegated messengers, youreject Christ. TM 97.

Only because of such endorse-ments by Ellen White do we brieyintroduce some of A. T. Jones workon Daniel 8. Although his works, like any other works of man, must

be tested by the rule of faith, nev-ertheless, given the same endorse-ment as the work of O. R. L. Crosier,

    A. T. Jones writings may also there-fore supply us with some presenttruth yet today. Jones wrote:

    A. T. Jones on Daniel 8

Now let us read verses 11and 12 of Daniel 8, and it will beplainly seen that here is exactlythe place where Paul found thescripture from which he taught theThessalonians concerning the manof sin and the mystery of iniquity:

Yea, he magnied himself even tothe Prince of the host, and by himthe daily sacrice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast

down. And an host was given himagainst the daily sacrice by reasonof transgression, and it cast downthe truth to the ground; and it prac-

ticed and prospered. This plainly points out that which took away thepriesthood, the ministry, and the sanc-

tuaryof God, and of Christianity. . . .It was by reason of transgres-sion, that is, by reason of sin, thatthis power gained the host thatwas used to cast down the truthto the ground, to shut away fromthe church and the world Christspriesthood, His ministry, and Hissanctuary; and to cast it all downto the ground and tread it under-foot. It was by reason of transgres-

sion that this was accomplished.Transgression is sin, and this isthe consideration and the revela-tion upon which the apostle in 2

Thessalonians denes this poweras the man of sin and the mysteryof iniquity.

    In Daniel 8:11-13; 11:31; and

Word studies in Daniel 8, as well as pioneer and world history, prove the daily to be Christs sanctuary ministry.

This historic document provesthat the pagan state religion had received

a fatal blow and ceased to exist 116 years

    prior to the year 508.

12:11, it will be noticed that the

word sacrice is in every case sup-plied. And it is wholly supplied; forin its place in the original there isno word at all. In the original theonly word that stands in this place,is the word tamid, that is here trans-lated daily, and in these places theexpression daily does not refer tothe daily sacrice any more than itrefers to the whole daily ministryor continual service of the sanctu-ary, of which the sacrice was onlya part. The word tamid in itself . . .

is translated daily. In Numbers 28and 29 alone, the word is used sev-enteen times, referring to the con-tinual service in the sanctuary. . . .

And yet, even the man of sin,the mystery of iniquity, itself bearswitness to the necessity of such aservice in the church in behalf ofsins. For though the man of sin,the mystery of iniquity, has takenaway the true priesthood, ministry,

and sanctuary ofChrist, and hascast these downto the ground to

be stamped upon, and has com-pletely hid them

from the eyesof the Christianworld; yet she didnot uerly throwaway the idea. No,she threw awaythe true, and castdown the true tothe ground; but, retaining the idea,in the place of thetrue she built upin her own realm

    an uerly falsestructure.

In the placeof Christ, the trueand divine HighPriest of Godsown appointmentin heaven, she hassubstituted a hu-man, sinful, andsinning priest-

    hood on earth. In

the place of the continual, heav-enly ministry of Christ in His truepriesthood upon His true sacrice, she has substituted only an intervalministry of a human, earthly, sinful, and sinning priesthood in the once-a-day daily sacrice of the mass. And in the place of the sanctuaryand the true tabernacle, which theLord pitched, and not man, she hassubstituted her own meeting-plac-es of wood and stone, to which sheapplies the term sanctuary. Thus,

instead of the one continual HighPriest, the one continual ministry, and the one continual sanctuary inheaven, which God has ordained, and which is the only true, she hasdevised out of her own heart andsubstituted for the only true, manyhigh priests, many ministries, manysacrices, and many sanctuaries,on earth, which in every possible re-lation are only human and uerly

false. A. T. Jones, The ConsecratedWay to Christian Perfection, italics inthe original. (For the entire text, seechapter 13, The Transgression andAbomination of Desolation. Foryour copy of Jones book, please vis-it Hope Internationals book store.)

In Jones writing above andin previous articles, we have laiddown a factual historical platformregarding the prophetic and histor-ical understandings of the pioneer

brethren on both sides of the issue.More documentation on that topicwill be forthcoming, but even nowspeculative and erroneous ideasabout their positions can be laid torest and the scriptures in the bookof Daniel can be addressed withunprejudiced and receptive minds.

Let us begin, then, our owndetailed historical and scripturalstudy of Daniel 8. We shall soon seeif Brother Jones work on Daniel 8contributes to and is consistentwith our understanding of Godsword. In our study of Daniel 8:9-14,11:31 and 12:11, we will focus on an-alyzing the verses and their clausesin the most direct, simplied man-ner. Despite space limitations ineach issue, we will not neglect to

thoroughly address the principalwords, phrases, and clauses thatare directly related to our study ofthe daily.

    From Whence Cometh

    the Little Horn?

Daniel 8:8-9 reads: Thereforethe he goat waxed very great: andwhen he was strong, the great hornwas broken; and for it came up four

notable ones toward the four windsof heaven. 9. And out of one ofthem came forth a lile horn, whichwaxed exceeding great, toward thesouth, and toward the east, and to-ward the pleasant land. Since therehas been confusion on this issue, and proponents of the AntiochusEpiphanes position grossly supplywords here to sustain their invalidinterpretation, we therefore briey

respond. From where does the lilehorn come? Does the antecedentfavor out of the winds or out ofthe horns? We shall let BrotherWilliam Shea, Ph.D., writing for theBible Research Institute, addressthis issue for us.

The English translation, Outof one of them. . . obscures andsmoothes out the actual Hebrewconstruction. The sentence actu-ally opens with two prepositionalphrases. Translated literally thesentence reads, and from the one

from them . . ., etc. The reason whyit is important to notice this literalconstruction is that it provides aprecise parallel to the gender of theelements found in the last phraseof v 8. This can best be shown by

transposing the rst phrase of v 9to line up beneath the last phrase ofv 8 with these elements in parallelcolumns. Such a procedure pres-ents the following alignment:

When this procedure is carriedout, it can be seen that the gender ofthe rst two elements in v 9 (one/them) lines up perfectly with thegender of the last two elements atthe end of v 8 (winds/heavens).

In writing his visions Danielsimply broke up the construct chainat the end of v 8 (the four windsofthe heavens) and distributed itstwo elements to two separate prepo-sitional phrases at the beginningof v 9 (from the one/from them).

This is not poetic parallelism; it issyntactic parallelism in which thegender of the elements in the sec-ond statement parallels the genderof the elements in the rst, or pre-ceding, statement.

Thus the antecedent of themin the phrase from them (v 9), isneither winds nor horns, butheavens. Since heavens ismascu-line by gender and treated as a plu-

ral in biblical Hebrew, according tothe verbs and adjectives used withit, there is perfect agreement ingender and number with the mas-culine plural pronoun them. It isnot necessary to resort to emenda-tions to bring the text into line with

ones preconceptions about wherethe lile horn came from. The femi-nine one of v 9 refers back to thefeminine winds of v 9. The textdiscloses the origin clearly enough:it came from one of the four windsof the heavens, that is, from one ofthe directions of the compass.

    From this understanding of

the syntax in vs 8-9, it is evidentthat when the lile horn came ontothe scene of action, it did not comefrom the Seleucid horn nor from theother three. In the pictorial vision itis simply seen as coming from oneof the compass directions. Thus the

syntax of this statement does notsupport the contention that the lit-tle horn developed from the Selucidhorn/kingdom. Biblical ResearchInstitute of the General Conferenceof Seventh-day Adventist, SelectedStudies on Prophetic Interpretation,1:42-3. (For further study on verses8-14, see Biblical Research Institute,Symposium on Daniel, Vol. 2, hereaf-ter referred to as BRI in this article. We highly recommend this bookfor the serious student of proph-

ecy, for the brethren have indeeddone a superb job on the book ofDaniel, from which we shall gleanfor this article.)

Clearly, then, it is not that thelile horn grows out of one of thehorns, and neither does the lilehorn grow out of one of the windsof heaven. Rather, it moves forthfrom one of the compass directionson a horizontal plane and expands

to other such directions. The direc-tion of the compass from which thelile horn moved forth can only

    be from the west.

    Little Horn:

    Pagan, Papal or Both?

This brings us to another pointof confusion. Is the lile hornrepresented by heaven as denot-ing both pagan and papal Rome?Indeed, pagan and papal Rome arecounted as one entity in Daniel andRevelation, as others have so recog-

nized. In Daniel 7:8, 20, 24 the lilehorn (the papacy) is representedas coming out of the fourth beast(pagan Rome). It is a continuationor part of pagan Rome. In Daniel 8the lile horn power nds its ful-llment only in pagan and papal

Rome combined. Heaven countsthem as one. In Daniel 11, theking of the north represents both

host. Prince (sar) oen desig-nates a heavenly being (Daniel 8:11,25; 10:13, 21; 12:1). The expressionPrince of the host is never usedto designate a high priest in the OldTestament. However, Joshua 5:14-15clearly designates the Prince of the

host of Yahweh:And he said, Nay; but as captainof the host of the LORD am I nowcome. And Joshua fell on his faceto the earth, and did worship, andsaid unto him, What saith my lordunto his servant? And the captain ofthe LORDS host said unto Joshua,Loose thy shoe from o thy foot; forthe place whereon thou standest isholy. And Joshua did so.

Further study would show thatin Daniel 12:1 Michael is the great

Prince, and in Jude 9 Michael isidentied with Christ. In otherwords, the Prince of the host isnone other than Jesus Christ.

By Him Should Read From Him

Regarding by4480 him (mim-mennu), those of you who have theKJV with a marginal reading willnotice that the translators recog-

nized the word by should perhapsbe translated from. Turning to TheComplete Word Study Dictionary: OldTestament (Chaanooga, Tennessee:AMG Press, 2003, p. 625), we quotefor the true meaning of mimmennu:A preposition used to indicatefrom, out of, away from; more than;aer, since, immediately; because of,since; so that; without; direction assouthward, etc. . . Its basic meaningis from, away from, out of.

    We quote from another credible

source. The Hebrew expressionmimmennu is not to be translated byhim but from him. Who is the ante-cedent of him? Grammatically, thenearest and most natural anteced-ent is the Prince of the host. This issupported in the ancient versions.BRI 404.

One day I asked my Hebrewteacher of twenty-six years teach-ing experience, Should the Hebrew

word mimmennu4480 be transliteratedas by or from? Her immediateresponse was Mimmennu is never

translated by; it is always trans-lated from.

Thus three authoritive sourcesspeak with one voice. The text will

now read from him, as a referenceto the Prince of the host.

    Scriptures Defne the Daily

Next we consider the meaningof the daily8548 (tamid). Usage:AV-continually 53, continual 26, daily 7,always 6, alway 4, ever 3, perpetual2, continual employment 1, ever-more 1, never 1; 103 verses, 104 hits.In our February issue we showedscripturally that the daily,8548 whenused in the context of the sanctuary,is always the work of the priest in

the rst apartment of the sanctuary.Never was the daily aributed tothe work of the priest in the second

apartment, nor to anything else. Now, when one is interested only

in the truth, he is not oended ifasked to be receptive to constructivecriticism. To be totally fair and open, let us consider the dailys interpre-tation from the opposing side, if youplease--from the source most com-

monly alluded to for the denitionof the daily being paganism. By1873 Brother Uriah Smith has clari-ed his position. He no longer paral-leled Crosier but dened the dailyas such: What Is the Daily? . . . Theword here rendered daily occurs inthe Old Testament one hundred andtwo times, according to the Hebrewconcordance. In the great majorityof instances it is rendered continualor continually. . . . It appears to be

more in accordance with both theconstruction and the context to sup-pose that the word daily refers to adesolating power. . . . Bythe contin-uance of desolation, or the perpet-ual desolation, we understand thatpaganism, through all its history, ismeant. Uriah Smith, Daniel and theRevelation, 164-5.

The careful reader will recognizethat aer Uriah Smith goes throughall 102 verses and can nd no verse tosustain the foundation upon which

he desires to build, he then declaresit appears to be more consistentto suppose that the word dai-ly refers to a desolating power.Certainly, appearances and sup-positions are not a foundation uponwhich Seventh-day Adventists wantto build. Since there is no scripturesupport for Smiths admied sup-position, we shall move on to otherword studies.

    Paganism Not Taken Away

    in Daniel 8

Taken away 7311 (rum). Usage:AV - (li, hold, etc...) up 63, exalt 47,high 25, oer 13, give 5, heave 3, extol3, loy 3, take 3, tall 3, higher 2, misc24; 184 verses, 194 hits. What exactlywas taken away in AD 508? Priorto 1844, William Miller said it wasthe conversion of pagan kings thattook away paganism in AD 508,and in that year paganism ceased.Charles Fitch, Millers rst ministe-rial convert (if you recall from our

March issue), questioned the basis ofMillers interpretation of the daily.March 5, 1838. . . . Will you have thekindness to inform me, by leer, inwhat history you nd the fact statedthat the last of the ten kings was

baptized in AD 508. Sylvester Bliss, Memoirs of William Miller (Boston:1853), p. 129. Brother Fitch never gothis reply, because nowhere in theannals of history is there recordedthe last of the ten kings having been

    baptized in AD 508.

    The Second View o

    Paganism; Rum Not

    Yet Controversial

    Aer 1844, andespecially af-ter 1873 and ap-

proaching theturn of the cen-tury, there came amarked determi-nation among pa-ganisms advocates toplace the basis for thetermination of paganismin 508 upon more defensibleground. A new, revised view, the second of three unsustainablepositions, posited that in AD 508,the Roman pagan state national reli-

gion had been taken away. However, eorts to promote this new viewmet with equally determined rebut-tal. E. J. Hibbard, writing from SanFernando, California, Nov. 28, 1909,to the son of Uriah Smith, Elder L.A. Smith, then living in Nashville,Tennessee, said: But we can notagree with you that the system ofavowed paganism of Rome wastaken away in 508, for that is in nosense true (p. 1).

Notice, paganism was under-stood as a system; it was organized. Also, the action of the verb rum 7311

was always used and under-stood to mean literally

to take away. Thatmeans, for pagan-

    ism advocates,the removal or

    abolishmentof paganismas a system.But never

was it sug-gested orso stated, much less

    implied, thatrum was ever

    understood tomean li up or

to exalt. Neitherthe event nor the date

aempted to be linked to it

can be historically supported, aswill soon be demonstrated.

Next, well view a leer to Mr. I.A. Ford of the Southern PublishingAssociation in Nashville, Tennessee, from A. G. Daniells, wrien July15, 1908, from Tacoma Park Station,Washington, D.C.: You are awarethat there is a dierence of opinionamong our leading men concerningthe meaning of Daniel 8:11-13. Theinterpretation of this scripture given

by Elder Uriah Smith, and followedby Elder Haskell, does not seem to

many of our brethren to be whollycorrect. They nd it impossible tosustain by good history the claimthat Paganism was taken away orabolished as the national religion ofRome in 508 A.D. For six or sevenyears some have urged that this er-ror, as they believe it to be, should becorrected (p. 1).

Again, the action of the verbrum was commonly understood bythose leading men and Mr. Ford tomean take away. There was no

controversy about that interpreta-tion. Rather, the focus of the dis-agreement was the abolishment ofpaganism as the national religion ofRome in AD 508.

White, writing from Sanitarium,California, to his brother J. E. Whitein Nashville, Tennessee, on June 1,1910, on page twelve of a twenty-page leer, states: If we take theother position that this passagedenitely teaches that the daily is

paganism, we are immediately in-volved with many diculties. Hereare some of them. [We will list onlythe following one.]

History does not testify thatpaganism was taken away in 508. Itdoes, however, show that the workof strengthening the papacy wascarried to such a point in that year asto fully justify the adoption of thatdate as the beginning of the 1290years. History also clearly showsthat the downfall of paganism as a

state religion occurred more than ahundred years earlier.

Having hundreds of pages ofcopies of the original leers, docu-ments, pamphlets and the like onthis topic of the daily from the1830s to the 1960s, we have the of-cial positions of the brethren onthe daily. Never once was rumsmeaning of take away disputedfrom either side. However, this new, second interpretation of paganism,

of it being the national religion ofRome that was taken away in AD508 [not lied up or exalted], wasnow the ocial teaching of pro-ponents of paganism, and was sotaught and believed by them, andso understood by the opponents ofthe paganism view.

We have already document-ed how the teaching of WilliamMiller on the daily prior to 1844was built upon a platform of error. Can this new, so-called historic

teaching of the daily stand thetest of investigation? Accordingto the opponents of the paganismview, the answer was and is oneunanimous No.

    Paganism Banned in AD 392

Willie White and others de-clared that history would not sus-

tain the paganism position ad-vocated by William Miller, UriahSmith and Elder Haskell, claiminginstead that paganism as a state re-ligion fell (or was taken away) morethan a hundred years earlier. Theypointed to The Decline and Fall of the

Roman Empire , by Edward Gibbon(Phila.: Henry T. Coates, n.d.), from

which we quote chapter twenty-eight in part, including the quotesfootnoted source: . . . These vain

pretences were swept away by thelast edict of Theodosius, whichinicted a deadly wound on thesuperstition of the Pagans. . . . Acrime of high treason against thestate which can be expiated only

    No Pagan Religions in Gaul

    Beyond 5th Century

But lets take this astep further and ask,What about aerAD 476, when the

Western RomanEmpire came to itsend and MerovingianGaul entered onto thestage of prophetic his-tory under the leader-ship of Clovis, King ofthe Franks? Did the Romanpagan system revive any timeprior to 508? I will let YitzhakHen, Ph.D. of medieval history atthe University of Cambridge, an-swer this for us:

As far as Merovingian Gaul isconcerned, there is no evidence tosuggest that any of the pagan reli-gions persisted beyond the h cen-tury, and there is no pagan religionwith a complex set of beliefs andpractices reecting mans aitudeto the supernatural which can beidentied or reconstructed from theinformation provided by the sourc-es. All one can say is that the con-demned practices were negligible

fragments, which did not form anycoherent system of beliefs and prac-tices, and which had long since losttheir original meaning and implica-tions. Thus, there is no justicationfor talking in terms of living pagan-ism in Gaul during the Merovingianperiod. Christianity crushed all sortsof religious systems which existed inGaul even before the Frankish occu-pation. Those bits and pieces whichdid survive, were disconnected fromtheir original system, and therefore

do not represent any non-Christianreligious or cult. They all survivedas fragments of ancient traditionswithin a Christian framework, andthey represent not more than a stageof pluralism which characterizedthe transition from paganism toChristianity. Yitzhak Hen,Culture &Religion in Merovingian Gaul, AD 481-751 (Leiden: Brill, 1995), p. 160.

    The condemned practices were

noneother than that which we have al-ready observed in the Theodosian

Code as having been outlawed in AD392 and thereaer: those related tothe pagan state religion. Therefore, this new, second interpretation ofpaganism will not stand the test ofinvestigation, either.

    Visigoths, Ostrogoths Were

    Arian Christians

Yet some have been led to be-

lieve that the issue in AD 508 wasover paganism, because they haveunderstood that the Visigoths werepagans and that, therefore, the con-ict in the West at that time was oneover paganism. Before we addressthis issue, we must rst correctlydene our terms. What exactly is apagan? We quote: One who is nota Christian . . . , one who has no reli-gion . . . , Professing no religion; hea-then. The American Heritage CollegeDictionary, 3rd ed., s.v. 1997, pagan.

So we must ask, were the Visigothsof 507-8 pagans? In fact, the Visigothswere Arian Christians.

Similarly, a few decades later, the issue in the East between theVandals and Ostrogoths (also ArianChristians) and Justinian was notabout paganism, nor was it solely apolitical conict. It was a religiouswar, as well, that would ultimatelydecide the dominance of the Catholic

or Arian faith in Eastern Europe: Itis evident, from the language of

Gregory of Tours, that this con-ict between the Franks and

Visigoths was regarded bythe orthodox party of hisown preceding ages as a

religious war, on which, humanly speaking, theprevalence of the Catholicor the Arian creed in

Western Europe depend-ed. Walter C. Perry, The

Franks (London: Longman,Brown, Green, Longmans, and

Roberts, 1857), p. 85. Perry quotesfrom Gregory of Tours The Historyof the Franks, trans. O. M. Dalton(Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1927),2:36-43. The authority on Clovis,

Gregory lived from A.D. 538 to 594.The Goths were a people of

Germanic stock who erected pow-erful Christian kingdoms upon theruins of the Roman Empire in theWest. . . . Their spiritual life wasperhaps higher than that of their op-ponents, and their moral standardswere admiedly superior. Theywere more tolerant and their theol-ogy was simple and based on theScriptures. . . . Aer the fall of the

Vandal and Ostrogothic kingdomsand the conversion of the Sueviand the Burgundians the Visigothswere the only Germanic peopleof Arian faith. The New Scha-Herzog Encyclopedia of ReligiousKnowledge, s.v. Goths (New York,London: Funk and Wagnalls, 1909),5:32-34. Historical documentationonce again validates no place forthe paganism view.

Paganisms New, Third ViewBased on New View o Rum

This brings us to a third deni-tion for paganism that has gained alarge following long aer the deathof Ellen White. Supporters of thismost recent denition began advo-cating that the Hebrew word rum,7311take away, now means to liup or to exalt. To unsuspecting

minds and the unread, this is beingpawned o as historic Adventism, while those who present the min-istry of Christ view are said to beteaching the new view.

Be not deceived, brothers andsisters. Nothing could be further

from the truth. We nd it to be justabsolutely incredible that, in fact, itis they that are teaching somethingnew. In strict justice, it is they thatare to be charged with departingfrom historic Adventism.

Nevertheless, let us look againa lile closer to the phrase takeaway, rum,7311 as found in Daniel8:11. When the Hebrew word rum isused in the context of the sanctuary, the action of the verb is describedas to take away or to remove.

Notice how this is done in the fol-lowing verses, please.

And the priest shall take fromthe meat oering a memorial there-of, and shall burn it upon the altar:it is an oering made by re, of asweet savour unto the LORD.Lev. 2:9.

And he shall take o from it allthe fat of the bullock for the sin of-fering; the fat that covereth the in-wards, and all the fat that [is] upon

the inwards, Lev. 4:8.As it was taken o from thebullock of the sacrice of peace of-ferings: and the priest shall burnthem upon the altar of the burntoering. Lev. 4:10.

And he shall take all hisfat from him, and burn it uponthe altar. Lev. 4:19.

And the priest shall puton his linen garment, andhis linen breeches shall heput upon his esh, and

take up [to remove]theashes which the re hathconsumed with the burntoering on the altar, andhe shall put them besidethe altar. Lev. 6:10.

And he shall take of ithis handful, of the our ofthe meat oering, and of the oilthereof, and all the frankincensewhich is upon the meat oering,

and shall burn it upon the altar fora sweet savour, even the memorialof it, unto the LORD. Lev. 6:15.

This meaning of take awayor remove is especially true ofDaniel 8:11, as the action of theverb is universally acknowledged

by the following: It can have thesense of removing something, abolishing it (Dan. 8:11). TheComplete Word Study Dictionary: OldTestament (Chaanooga, Tennessee:AMG Press, 2003), p. 1042.

While it is true that rum canmean li up or to exalt, wehave already found that nowheredoes the Bible say that paganism isthe daily, so there is no founda-tion upon which to build here. Andnowhere in any of the annals of

history has paganism as a systemsurvived aer the h century inorder to be exalted. And in no waycan it be shown that the dailyis both pagan and papal Rome, which in turn will eliminate any-one trying to build a foundationon the sand dunes of private in-terpretation by using a false prem-ise wrested from clear wording inGreat Controversy, p. 50.

We will return to this Hebrew

word rum to consider the possibil-ity that Daniel wanted to conveythe idea of exalt or take awayor both, in contrast to the Hebrewword sur5493 in regard to the

terms take away or takenaway in Daniel 11:31 and 12:11. Afew more pieces of the big puzzlemust be put in place before beingdenitive here.

Smith in Error: Rome NotPlace o His Sanctuary

As we continue our wordstudy of Daniel 8:11, we next wantto scrutinize the noun place4349(makon) from the clause the placeof his sanctuary was cast down.(An important distinction is thatthe sanctuary itself was not castdown but, rather, the place of hissanctuary was.) Usage of place:AV- place 14, habitation 2, founda-

tions 1; 17 verses, 17 hits. Thosewho advocate the paganism viewof place do nothing more thanecho Uriah Smith and endorse hisconstruction of places mean-ing: Pagan Rome was remodeledinto papal Rome. The place of hissanctuary, or worship, the cityof Rome, was cast down. The seatof government was removed byConstantine to Constantinople, A.D. 330. This same transaction is

brought to view in Revelation 13: 2,where it is said that the dragon, pa-gan Rome, gave to the beast, papalRome, his seat, the city of Rome.Daniel and the Revelation, 161.

Let us analyze those sentencesof Uriah Smith for historical ac-

curacy. Was the pagan city ofRome, which Smith interprets

as being the place of hissanctuary, truly cast

down in AD 330? Notat all. Smith based his

    awed interpretationon a document known

by historians as theConstitutum DomniConstantini Imperatoris,

    The agreement ofthe lord Constantine

the emperor, or beerknown as the Donation

of Constantine, in whichConstantine allegedly conferred

    13Volume , Number 5

on the papacy extensive privilegesand possessions. However, thatspecious document is just anotherforgery in the history of the earlyand medieval church, recognizedas such by scholars the world over.Even the Catholic church read-

ily admits to this fact: This docu-ment is without doubt a forgery, fabricated somewhere betweenthe years 750 and 850. As earlyas the eenth century its falsitywas known and demonstrated.Donation of Constantine, TheCatholic Encyclopedia (New York:Appleton, 1909), 5:119.

    One Error Leads to Others

But the inaccurate historicalfoundation of Smiths position doesnot stop there. Smith and other pa-ganism view adherents tell us, Theseat of government was removed

by Constantine to Constantinople.. . . This same transaction is broughtto view in Revelation 13:2. . . . Is ittrue that the same event is referredto in Revelation 13:2? Turning to in-spiration, we have this quote fromEllen White: In the sixth century

the papacy had become rmly es-

tablished. Its seat of power wasxed in the imperial city, and the

bishop of Rome was declared tobe the head over the entire church.Paganism had given place to thepapacy. The dragon had given to

the beast his power, and his seat, and great authority. Revelation13:2. And now began the 1260 yearsof papal oppression foretold inthe prophecies of Daniel and theRevelation. Daniel 7:25; Revelation13:5-7. Great Controversy , 54, em-

phasis added. When didthe 1260 years of papal op-pression begin? AD 330 or538? Of course, 538hence,another error. Smithsrst misunderstandingabout the Donation ledto a second one here re-vealed. A third error willnow be exposed.

Uriah Smith and theadvocates of paganism tellus that the meaning of the

word place in Daniel 8:11is the place of his sanctu-ary, or worship, the cityof Rome. . . . They claim in AD330, Rome was cast down, thus, they say, indicating the demise ofpaganism in that year. How wasthis accomplished, according tothem? The seat of governmentwas removed by Constantine toConstantinople, A. D. 330. While itis true that the capitol was moved

to Constantinople, history unani-mously reports it wasdone for political expe-diency and was not theresult of any aempt toundermine or vanquishpaganism. Nor did itresult in the historicaldemise of paganism inthat year. More impor-tantly, though, Smithscomprehension of theevent, based as it is on

the forged Donation ofConstantine, completelymisses the true under-standing of place. Sowhat is the place4349 in

Daniel 8:11 that was cast down? For purest light and understand-ing on the true meaning of theplace4349 (makon) of his sanctu-ary, we turn to the scripturesto see what the Bible says.

The Bible Defnes Place or Us

Then hear thou from heaventhy dwelling place,4349 and forgive, and render unto every man ac-cording unto all his ways, whoseheart thou knowest; (for thou only

knowest the hearts of the childrenof men:) 2 Chron. 6: 30.

Then hear thou from the heav-ens, even from thy dwelling place,4349and do according to all that thestranger calleth to thee for; that allpeople of the earth may know thyname, and fear thee, as doth thy peo-ple Israel, and may know that this

house which I have built is calledby thy name. 2 Chron. 6: 33.Then hear thou from the heav-

ens, even from thy dwelling place,4349their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and for-give thy people which have sinnedagainst thee. 2 Chron. 6: 39.

We know that by him the dailysacrice was taken away, and theplace of his sanctuary was castdown. We see from these versesthat the place referred to is where

prayers are heard and sins are for-given, i.e., the heavenly sanctuary. That heavenly place has beencast down--removed from mensremembrance by the same entitythat took away the daily fromChrist by interposing an earthlycounterfeit of His daily minis-tration in the sanctuary. Withoutquestion, these scriptures revealthat the lile horn has taken on a

priestly aire and presumes to per-form priestly functions. The hornsplain intention continues to be todeect mens interest in heaven andGods interaction with humanity

by inserting himself between manand his interceding Savior and in

the place of Christ. It was notpaganRome but papal Rome who daredand dares to aempt to usurp theprerogatives of God, who alone cananswer prayers and forgive sins. That is the signicant event pagan-ism proponents miss.

    Expanding Understanding o

    Place

    To expand upon our Biblical

study of place, as well as for con-rmation of our understanding, weask again, What is Gods dwell-ing place4349 (makon)? The answercomes, Justice and judgment arethe habitation4349 (makon) of thythrone: mercy and truth shall go

before thy face. Ps. 89:14. Cloudsand darkness are round about him:righteousness and judgment are thehabitation4349(makon) of his throne.Ps. 97:2.

Righteousness, judgment and justice are said to be the makon, the place of his sanctuary. Theyconstitute the basis or founda-tion of His throne. That meaningof foundation is also used in con-nection with the Jerusalem temple, and in one instance designatesthe whole site or area of Mt. Zion:Ezra 2:68; Isa. 4:5. Of the remain-ing ten verses out of the seventeentimes the Bible uses this word ma-kon in the Old Testament, we nd

in Psalm 104:5 the only instance inwhich makon is not employed in areference to the sanctuary. Thatsingular usage refers in metaphori-cal language to Gods act of estab-lishing the earth upon its foun-dations. Otherwise, seven timesmakon is used for the designation ofGods place of dwelling: 1 Kings8: 39, 43, 49; 2 Chron. 6:2, 30, 33,39. These texts show His place of

dwelling is in heaven: 1 Kings 8:39, 43, 49; 2 Chron. 6:30, 33, 39; Ps.33:14. Three times it is used for Hisearthly place of dwelling, name-ly, His earthly sanctuary: 1 Kings8:13; 2 Chron. 6:2; Ex. 15:17. The con-text of Isa. 18:4 could allow makon

to be either the heavenly or earthlydwelling. Never is the makon saidto represent a pagan sanctuary orever even allude to anything of apagan or of a sinful nature.

These scriptures bring us againto the seled Biblical fact that it wasthe heavenly foundation of Histhrone that the lile horn thoughtto cast down to the ground. In noinstance is this term connected withthe idea of contamination or dele-ment. The horns act of throwing

down the makon (foundation orplace) of the sanctuary in heaven

is an interference with Gods hear-ing the prayers of his people andan interference with the forgive-

ness that is the basis/foundation ofGods sanctuary in heaven.

    Miqdash, Makon, Maqom:

    The Sanctuary is Gods

We now progress to the inter-pretation of the second noun in thephrase the place of his sanctuary:sanctuary4720 (miqdash). Usage: AV-

sanctuary 69, holy place 3, chapel 1,hallowed part 1; 72 verses, 74 hits.Let us examine this words applica-tion in the Bible.

Thou shalt bring them in, andplant them in the mountain ofthine inheritance, in the place,4349

O LORD, which thou hast made forthee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary,4720O Lord, which thy hands have es-tablished. Ex. 15:17. Here we haveHis foundation (makon) and Hissanctuary (miqdash) all in thesame verse. The Bible says that ourGod dwells in the miqdash of theearthly sanctuary. This is nothingless than the paern of the greatoriginal where God Himself dwellsin the heavenly sanctuary:

And let them make me a sanc-

tuary;4720 that I may dwell amongthem. Ex. 25:8.

According toall that I showthee, aer thepaern of thetabernacle, andthe paern of allthe instrumentsthereof, even soshall ye makeit. Ex. 25:9.

Miqdash mayrefer to Godssanctuary/tem-ple in the earthspecically onthe great Dayof Atonement:And he shallmake an atone-ment for the holy

sanctuary,4720 and he shall make anatonement for the tabernacle of thecongregation, and for the altar, and

he shall make an atonement for thepriests, and for all the people of thecongregation. Lev. 16: 33.

It may refer to Gods sanctu-ary/temple on earth: O God, thouart terrible out of thy holy places:4720the God of Israel is he that givethstrength and power unto his peo-ple. Blessed be God. Ps. 68: 35.

And miqdash may refer to Godssanctuary/temple on earth and in

    16/32

heaven in the same verse: Honourand majesty are before him: strengthand beauty are in his sanctuary.4720Ps. 96:6.

It is true that miqdash can refer toa sanctuary of Satan, while qodeshsolely refers to the sanctuary of

the Lord. But those who are look-ing for a pagan sanctuary will notnd it here in the context of Daniel8:11. This position will be cementedeven further as we progress in ourstudy, but the Bible does tell us theterm heaven uses to describe paganholy places or a pagan sanctuary:place4725 (maqom). Usage:AV- place391, home 3, room 3, whitherso-

    ever 2, open 1, space 1, country 1;379 verses, 402 hits.

Lets view the word place(maqom) as it is used in Deuteronomy:

Ye shall uerly destroy all the plac-es,4725 wherein the nations whichye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and uponthe hills, and under every greentree: Deut. 12:2. And ye shall over-throw their altars, and break theirpillars, and burn their groves withre; and ye shall hew down thegraven images of their gods, and de-stroy the names of them out of thatplace.4725 Deut. 12:3. It is this wordmaqom, clearly alluding to places of

pagan religious activity, that Danielwould have used if the sanctuary in8:11 was a pagan sanctuary.

Again we present evidence thatmaqom is used when referring topagan sanctuaries: Then shall yeknow that I am the LORD, whentheir slain men shall be among theiridols round about their altars, uponevery high hill, in all the tops of themountains, and under every green

tree, and under every thick oak, theplace4725 where they did oer sweetsavour to all their idols. Eze. 6:13.

According to 2 Cor. 13:1 themeaning of the maqom is estab-lished by two or three witnesses ofscriptures. Without question, then,

Daniel would have used maqom ifhe had a pagan sanctuary in mind.Instead, he used makon.

    What was Cast Down?

Now we move forward to a de-termination of the meaning of castdown7993 (shalak). Usage:AV- cast 77,

    cast out 15, cast away 11, cast down11, cast forth 4, cast o 2, adventured1, hurl 1, misc 3; 121 verses, 125 hits.While the lile horn, the papacy, only

thinks to change times and laws,it has indeed cast down the con-tinuance of divine services for manssalvation, in that its usurpation and

blasphemous priestly claims for cen-turies have blinded the eyes of toomany who knew or presently knownothing of the heavenly mediationavailable to them. Through churchlaw and through exaltation of thecounterfeit worship system so vivid-ly portrayed in 2 Thessalonians 2:4,the truth has been concealed so as

to deny or otherwise block access tothe forgiveness freely oered. Thisdeliberate obscuring or castingdown aacks the very foundation-al intent of Gods sanctuary. In theeyes of heaven these acts to interferewith or prohibit mankinds accessto the holy sanctuary are viewed asan aack on God Himself. It should

be no marvel that Daniel 8:25 tellsus the lile horns interference and

audacious claims to the preroga-tives of God will end in the ultimateconsequence: he shall be brokenwithout hand.

The health reform is an im-

portant part of the thirdangels message; and as apeople professing this re-

form, we should not retrograde, butmake continual advancement. It isa great thing to insure health byplacing ourselves in right relationsto the laws of life, and many havenot done this. A large share of thesickness and suering among usis the result of the transgression of

physical law, is brought upon indi-

viduals by their own wrong habits. Our ancestors have bequeathed

to us customs and appetites whichare lling the world with disease. The sins of the parents, throughperverted appetite, are with fearfulpower visited upon the children tothe third and fourth generations. The bad eating of many generations, the gluonous and self-indulgenthabits of the people, are lling our

poor-houses, our prisons, and ourinsane asylums. Intemperance indrinking tea and coee, wine, beer, rum, and brandy, and the use of to-

bacco, opium, and other narcotics, has resulted in great mental andphysical degeneracy, and this de-generacy is constantly increasing.

    Not Gods Will or Us

Are these ills visited upon therace through Gods providence? No;they exist because the people havegone contrary to his providence, and still continue to rashly disre-gard his laws. In the words of theapostle I would entreat those whoare not blinded and paralyzed bywrong teaching and practices, thosewho would render to God the best

service of which they are capable:I beseech you therefore, brethren,

by the mercies of God, that ye pres-ent your bodies a living sacrice, holy, acceptable unto God, whichis your reasonable service. And benot conformed to this world: but beye transformed by the renewing ofyour mind that ye may prove whatis that good, and acceptable, andperfect, will of God.

Benefts o ObedienceWe have no right to wantonly

violate a single principle of the lawsof health. Christians should not fol-low the customs and practices ofthe world. The history of Danielis placed upon record for our ben-et. He chose to take a course thatwould make him singular in thekings court. He did not conform tothe habits of courtiers in eating anddrinking, but purposed in his heart

that he would not eat of the kingsmeat nor drink of his wines. Thiswas not a hastily-formed, waveringpurpose, but one that was intelli-gently formed and resolutely car-ried out. Daniel honored God; andthe promise was fullled to him,Them that honor me, I will honor. The Lord gave him knowledgeand skill in all learning and wis-dom, and he had understanding

in all visions and dreams; so thathe was wiser than all in the kingscourts, wiser than all the astrologersand magicians in the kingdom.

Those who serve God in sincerityand truth will be a peculiar people, unlike the world, separate from theworld. Their food will be prepared, not to encourage gluony or gratifya perverted taste, but to secure tothemselves the greatest physicalstrength, and consequently the best

    mental conditions.

    Counsel or the Cook

My sisters, do not place uponyour tables food that is exciting andirritating, but that which is plain, wholesome, and nutritious. Do nothave too great a variety at a meal;three or four dishes are a plenty. Atthe next meal you can have a change. The cook should tax her inventivepowers to vary the dishes she pre-

pares for the table, and the stomachshould not be compelled to take thesame kinds of food meal aer meal.

    Water with Meals

Many make a mistake in drink-ing cold water with their meals.Taken with meals water diminishesthe ow of the salivary glands; andthe colder the water, the greater the

injury to the stomach. Ice water oriced lemonade, drank with meals, will arrest digestion until the sys-tem has imparted sucient warmthto the stomach to enable it to takeup its work again. Hot drinks aredebilitating; and besides, those whoindulge in their use become slavesto the habit. Food should not bewashed down; no drink is neededwith meals. Eat slowly, and allow the

saliva to mingle with the food. Themore liquid there is taken into thestomach with the meals, the moredicult it is for the food to digest; forthe liquid must rst be absorbed. Donot eat largely of salt, give up boledpickles, keep ery, spiced food outof your stomach, eat fruit with yourmeals, and the irritation that callsfor so much drink will cease to exist. But if anything is needed to quench

thirst, pure water drank some liletime before or aer the meal is allthat nature requires. Never take tea, coee, beer, wine, or any spirituousliquors. Water is the best liquid pos-sible to cleanse the tissues.

    Hot Foods Debilitating

Very hot food ought not to betaken into the stomach. Soups, pud-dings, and other articles of the kind, are oen eaten too hot, and as a con-sequence the stomach is debilitated.Let them become partly cooled be-fore they are eaten.

    Important to Eat Slowly

In order to have healthy diges-

tion, food should be eaten slowly. Those who wish to avoid dyspepsia, and those who realize their obliga-tion to keep all their powers in thecondition which will enable themto render the best service to God,will do well to remember this. Ifyour time to eat is limited, do not

bolt your food, but eat less, and eatslowly. The benet you derive fromyour food does not depend so muchon the quantity eaten as on its thor-

ough digestion, nor the graticationof the taste so much on the amountof food swallowed as on the lengthof time it remains in the mouth.

Those who are excited, anxious,or in a great hurry, would do wellnot to eat until they have found restor relief; for the vital powers, al-ready severely taxed, cannot supplythe necessary gastric juice.

    Meals When Traveling

When about to start on a journey, and obliged to meet the train at anhour earlier than your usual mealtime, think of the results of irregu-lar and rapid eating, and take some-thing as a lunch, if it is no more than

bread and an apple or some otherkind of fruit. When traveling, someare almost constantly nibbling, ifthere is anything within their reach. This is a most pernicious practice.

    The condition of

    our acceptance

    with God is a

    practical separation

    from the world.

Animals that do not have reason, and that know nothing of mentaltaxation, may do this without in-

jury; but they are no criterion forrational beings, who have mentalpowers that should be used forGod and humanity. If travelers

would eat regularly of the sim-plest and most nutritious kinds offood, they would not experience sogreat weariness, nor suer so muchfrom sickness.

    Frequency o Eating

It is quite a common customwith people of the world to eatthree times a day, besides eating atirregular intervals between meals;and the last meal is generally the

most hearty, and is oen taken justbefore retiring. This is reversing thenatural order; a hearty meal shouldnever be taken so late in the day.Should these persons change theirpractice, and eat but two meals aday, and nothing between meals, not even an apple, a nut, or anykind of fruit, the result would beseen in a good appetite and greatlyimproved health.

Indulged Appetite a SinOur Saviour warned his dis-

ciples that in the last days, justprior to his second coming, a stateof things would exist very similarto that which preceded the ood.Eating and drinking would be car-ried to excess, and the world would

be given up to business and plea-sure. This state of things does ex-ist at the present time. The world islargely given up to the indulgence

of appetite; and the disposition tofollow its customs and maxims will

bring us into bondage to pervertedhabits,--habits that will make usmore and more like the doomed in-habitants of Sodom.

Excessive indulgence in eatingand drinking is sin. Our heavenlyFather has bestowed upon us thegreat blessing of health reform, thatwe may glorify him by obeying the

claims he has upon us. It is the dutyof those who have received thelight upon this important subject tomanifest a greater interest for thosewho are still suering for want ofknowledge. Those who are look-ing for the soon appearing of their

Saviour should be the last to mani-fest a lack of interest in this greatwork of reform. The harmonious, healthy action of all the powersof body and mind results in hap-piness; the more elevated and re-ned the powers, the more pureand unalloyed the happiness. Anaimless life is a living death. Themind should dwell upon themesrelating to our eternal interests. This will be conducive to health of

    body and mind.

    Condition o our Acceptance

Our faith requires us to elevatethe standard of reform, and takeadvance steps. The condition ofour acceptance with God is a prac-tical separation from the world. The Lord calls upon us as a people,Come out from among them, and

be ye separate, and touch not theunclean; and I will receive you.

The world may despise you be-cause you do not meet their stan-dard, engage in their dissipatingamusements, and follow their per-nicious ways; but the God of heavenpromises to receive you, and to bea Father unto you. Ye shall be my

sons and daughters, saith the LordAlmighty. The apostle continues,Having therefore these prom-ises, dearly beloved, let us cleanseourselves from all lthiness of theesh and spirit, perfecting holi-ness in the fear of God. This is ourwork as Christians, to cleanse ourrobes of character from every spot. The spirit must be in harmonywith the Spirit of Christ; the habitsmust be in conformity to his will,in obedience to his requirements.

    BRIDLING THE

    TONGUE

God is looking for a people,

a people who will perfect-ly reproduce His character

that He might come again. Satan,at the same time, works as hardas he can to prevent Gods peoplefrom developing that character. Infact, he claims that it is impossiblefor man to go without sin, and heis oen supported by some whoclaim to be Gods people. And,of course, Satan walks about likea roaring lion seeking whom he

might devour. We are told that God delays Hiscoming because of His great lovefor each of us. The long night ofgloom is trying; but the morningis deferred in mercy, because ifthe Master should come, so manywould be found unready. Godsunwillingness to have His peopleperish has been the reason for solong delay. 2T 192-194.

However, there is a limit be-yond which the judgments of

Jehovah can no longer be delayed.PK 417. The wickedness of theworld is increasing every day, andwhen a certain line is reached, theregister will be closed and the ac-count seled. There will be nomore a sacrice for sin. The Lordcometh. RH, March 27, 1894.

ances and for a weight I use a one-pound loaf I buy from the baker.

    This illustrates the injustice of

many people. They have two stan-dards: one for themselves and an-other for the other fellow.

Do you have the same standardin what is said and done by youthat you have for others? As I havelooked at myself and the words Isometimes speak to others, includ-ing my wife, I have found that I needto improve in the use of my tongue.I want to strive with all I have to beone of the 144,000.

    Swi to Hear,Slow to Speak

I am remindedof a saying I heardyears ago. A wiseold owl sat in an oak.

The more he heard, the less he spoke;the less he spoke, themore he heard. Whycant we all be likethat wise old bird?

James says thesame thing in anoth-er way. Wherefore,my beloved breth-

ren, let every man be swi to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. James1:19. And in verse twenty-six, If

any man among you seem to be re-ligious, and bridleth not his tongue,

but deceiveth his own heart, thismans religion is vain [of no value].

In 1st Peter 1, verse een, weread, But as He which hath calledyou is holy, so be ye holy in all man-ner of conversation.

As part of your daily prayer youmight repeat the words of Davidfound in Psalm 141:3, Set a watch,O Lord, before my mouth; keep the

door of my lips. And Solomon inthe proverbs says: A so answerturneth away wrath: but grievouswords stir up anger (Proverbs 15:1)or the heart of the righteous studi-eth to answer: but the mouth of thewicked poureth out evil things.

Proverbs 15:28. And in Proverbs17:28 we read, Even a fool, when heholdeth his peace, is counted wise:and he that shueth his lips is es-teemed a man of understanding.

God is looking for a people, apeople with no guile in their mouths,a people with characters like Jesus. The victory here can be gained onlywhen we realize that there may be aproblem sometimes with our words, and seek to surrender the control ofour tongues to Jesus on a daily ba-

sis. May the Lord help each of youto have victory.

ne of the greatest prot-generating industriestoday is the dietary

supplement industry.People are aware of their healthneeds more than any other timein history. Therefore, they are pur-chasing supplements on the order

of billions of dollars a year. But not all supplements are alike.

Many of the vitamins and miner-

als on the market today are syn-thetic and are questionable in theamount of value they contribute toyour health. Synthetics are cheaperand easier to produce, so many, ifnot most, of the supplements thatyou nd in major chain stores atlow, low prices are synthetics andpossibly of lile value. Couple withthis the fact that most vitamin pillsand tablets break down in the di-gestive tract so slowly that you onlyget a fraction of their value to start

with, and you will see that youmay be spending a lot of money foralmost nothing.

It is very easy to surf the webthese days and nd multitudinousaccounts by individuals claim-ing that the vitamin or mineralsupplement they have taken sim-ply passed through their systemwithout dissolving. I recently had alady call me to say that an inexpen-

sive vitamin that she had taken thenight before appeared whole in herstool that morning.

Is there an answer? Yes. Some ofthe products on the market do havequalities that are very benecial. What makes the dierence? Thedierence is where they get the vi-tamins and minerals from. In otherwords, what is the source? Wholefood is a very important character-istic of a good quality, economicalsupplement. Vitamins made withwhole foods typically break downfaster in the digestive tract, mak-ing available the nutrients that you

need to have that healthier lifestyleyou want.

Thank you for the beacon oflight that Hope International is inthis world for these last days. My wife is so happy to receiveit that she reads it cover to coverwhen it rst arrives in the mail.

Thank you for your emphasis onthe health message in your publica-tion. I just purchased and receivedthe clay this week and look forwardto a healthier future from its use. Iwish more people in the Adventistchurch would receive this publica-tion.

I just wanted to say I am thank-ful for your courage to write about

the daily. Your articles will help bring us into unity, as there hasbeen a quiet division in the historicranks for many years. Ill look for-ward to the next in the series.

Im glad to see the subject of thedaily addressed. Id come to thesame conclusion a while back, butits refreshing to read your straight-forward coverage and know thatthere still are men whose conscienc-es are as true to duty as the needle

to the pole, who will stand for theright though the heavens fall.Anon.

Im happy to be sending youthis check to pay for a subscriptionto my favorite magazine. Manythanks to those who made it pos-sible for me to receive it previously.

Preach on, brother-- I love it! Myhusband thought you got a lile

carried away, but I thought it was agreat message. We have really been

blessed by these monthly DVDs.Very few people, even in SDA cir-cles, will stand up and tell the coldtruth about Rome any more. Howmany times and how many waysdoes God have to tell us sti-necked rebels? Appreciate your

    basic honest forthrightness whichseems genuine.

We are especially blessed bythese camp meeting tapes becausewe are no longer able to aend be-

cause of age, health, and nances. We are what I guess you wouldcall charter members of HopeInternational and Firm Foundationmagazine. Dont think we havemissed an issue since it has beenpublished. We arent particularlyin love with the glossy paper

but aer reading your episode (onthe edge of our chairs) for severalmonths, we have come to have a

beer appreciation of it. How the

Lord leads and blesses. Marvelousare His ways!Do want you to know we ap-

preciate so very much the ministryHope International is doing to n-ish the work and hasten the Lordscoming. Your monthly DVD mes-sages and magazines are highlightsof our lives. Keep up the good work(even if you do get in trouble in somequarters). Know that you are pleas-ing a lot of peopleand, of course,God is the One to be pleased. I

    think you are accomplishing that.S

Your research totally refutes thefuturistic interpretation and for therst time establishes 508 and 538.
