SPOTNEWS

The Daily Illini’s on-the-spot news coverage is regularly

supplemented with photographs that show our readers exactly

what happened. Photographers have to capture a strong image

with limited time and resources. Here are some of our best

examples of the year.

1. Kelly Bakas, sophomore in LAS, carries her umbrella in her arm as she walks across the Quad during a break in the rain Aug. 23.

2. Standing between a miniaturized model, front, and his actual 31-foot-tall steel sculpture, artist John David Mooney directs the installment of his latest work next to Urbana City Hall on April 11.

3. Michael Willard, senior in LAS, takes a drink from a fresh cup of iced tea while walking up the south staircase to the second floor of the Main Library on May 2. The day before Reading Day, some students take exams, some relax and some prepare for exams in the near future. Willard was preparing for an exam in his American political theory course, to take place in an hour.

4. A University employee pours in buckets of blended yogurt and fruit to make the world’s largest smoothie outside Memorial Stadium on Aug. 19.

5. In the early morning light, ROTC cadets take cover and prepare for the landing of a UH60-Blackhawk helicopter in the utility fields off St. Mary’s Road on Aug. 16. Two Blackhawk helicopters from the Illinois National Guard transported incoming University ROTC cadets on the second day of their annual Cadet Orientation Program. Even after going on multiple flights, “It’s still a treat for me,” said Lt. Peter Lutz.

6. Steve Chestnut, of Brownstown, Ill., and worker for Mason’s Masonry, sets up scaffolding near Noyes Lab to prevent any falling objects from hitting passersby below April 26.

7. Sydney Sherman, a student in LAS, left, and Chloe Cachola, student in AHS, right, “whip their hair back and forth” with other students involved with the campus’ stress management peer program Oct. 31.

#"7,"36#, PICTORIALAs the common saying goes, a picture is worth 1,000

words. The photo staff at The Daily Illini works to capture photos that tell a story. Below are some of the

staff’s favorite pictorials from this school year.

JOSHUA BECKMANParticipants in Sleep Out On The Quad, a student-organized event to raise awareness about homelessness, construct temporary shelters out of tape and cardboard on the Quad just after midnight Sept. 14. Organizers Lexi Rosado, sophomore in LAS, and Chris Sierra, senior in LAS, asked local restaurants and businesses to donate the used cardboard boxes for the shelters used to sleep on the Quad from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.

SADIE TEPPERA view looking east from Illini Tower shows a rainbow stretching all the way across the sky following the tornado warnings issued May 1.

PRITTEN VORATim Lewis, junior in LAS, of the Champaign-Urbana Tricksters, practices a kicking maneuver on March 27 near the Activities and Recreation Center.
