Any contr ibut i on to th e early h istory of NewYork City
fir st known as New Ams terdam—awakens peculiar interest.Th e p ioneer men and women Wh o la id th e foundat i ons or
endured th e hardships of life in th e formative period of th e
Metropolis of th e Emp i re S tate deserve to be held in grateful
remembrance . These p i oneers were not ti tled people. But
few of them possessed weal th . They were quite unconscious
of doing anyth ing to be recorded in history . No profess i onal
chronicler was at hand to take note of the ir brave deeds .
They are known to us today chiefly through th e public
records of th e S tate and of th e Church,—when they were
born,and marr ied and died
,and what property they ac
quired , and to whom it was transm itted,—to obtain even
these facts is no sligh t labor . Th e wr iter has a t temp ted to
do more than th is wi th reference to th e fam il ies of wh ich h e
treats . Every ava ilable incident in th e ind ivi dual lives of
th e Colonial per iod is in troduced in th e pr inted page, so that
th e work becomes a series of b iograph ical studies .
There are two d is t inct periods in th e Colon ial h istory of
New Y ork—th e Dutch per iod of 50 years,extend ing from
1 61 4 to 1 664, th e date of S tuyvesant’s surrender to th e English
fleet—and th e Engli sh per iod of 1 60 years,f rom 1 664 to 1 773
,
when th e R evolutionary W ar began .
Among th e p ioneers wh o figured conspiciousl y in both
these periods were some whose li ves have not h i therto been

The D e Riemer Family.
A . D . 1 640— 1 90 3 .
Th e progeni tors of th e D e R iemer fam ily in New Amsterdamwere Isaac D e R ieme r and Lysbe t Grevenraet (some time sspe lled G reveraad
,and G reefraadt, and G raeveradt) , sister of
I saac Grevenr aet,and daughter of Metje G .
The name D e R iemer (various ly spe l led de R ymer,D
’
Ryom er,
and D e R eamer,D e R eme r
,and D erumer) indicates a French
origin and Huguenot stock, but this couple were from Holland .
Genealogists concede, what a thorough investigation of D utch
records will doubtless prove, that th e fam ily ance stors were
re fugees from France who h ad,some generat ions previously , on
account o f anti-R om ish convictions,fled from France and r e
ma ined in Holland until they had become adherents of th eR e forme d re l igion and users of th e D utch language . G . W .

Nicholas Gouverneur and h is wife Mach te l t D e R iemer were of
French extraction, but emigrated to New Amsterdam through
Holland .
