Ethics are not optional in medicine

• They are an essential and vital part of health care.

• A common ethical code is potentially valuable.

• According to the state law the Cyprus Medical Association has an Ethical code that channels the physicians on how they could exercise their profession for the wellbeing of

their patients.

Ethics are not optional in medicine

• CyMA’s code of Deontology describes the ethical environment for the delivery of health care and reflects its character and general approach.

• The ethical code tries to make subjective aspects of care more objective or separate value from practical situations.

• It is in the nature of the work of professions that will engage individual responsibility for ethical practice.

Ethics are not optional in medicine

• Ethical codes can give shape and structure to our moral environment and summarise our ethical position while leaving ethical responsibility with the individual practitioner.

• But what it cannot do is to provide the certain answers for the many ethical problems encountered in the course of medical practice

Ethics are not optional in medicine

• The Hippocratic Oath is perhaps the best known code of this kind, and is still administered in many medical schools worldwide.

• Medical Schools have an important role in order to enhance the knowledge of the medical students in regards to the fundamental values of the medical profession, before they start their career.

• On the other hand the Medical Ethical Code is not something static. It has to develop through time and incorporate new concerns that are rising through the development of the Medical

profession.

Continuous Medical Development

• Professional development is a prerequisite element for the progress and improvement of any professional that wants to become and remain at the top of his profession.

• The technological developments but also the demand from a physician to acquire other administrative and/ or professional skills, creates the need for continuous medical development through specialized interdisciplinary educational and academic courses.

Continuous Medical Development

• The changes and the developments needed to incorporate, in order for a physician or for clinical units to remain up to date and improve their productivity, are various and multi - sectoral.

• Thus, the professionals in the healthcare sector have the need to follow and acquire new knowledge and skills in order to implement modern methods and policies compatible with the modern needs of their patients.

Those advance interdisciplinary courses are trying to join together different fields of studies in order to address the specialized needs of the healthcare sector.

Those courses have provided essential information, standards, criteria, and policies that define what it means to be a modern and efficient healthcare provider.

Furthermore, the healthcare providers, through the knowledge that they will acquire can utilize practical strategies in order to enhance changes as an addition to their activities/educational interventions.

The providers can also build bridges with other stakeholders through collaboration and cooperation, and participate within an institutional or system framework for quality improvement.
