The Curriculum at Spen Valley High School
What do we mean by “The Curriculum”? It is the totality of the students’ learning experience including the structure, ideas, activities, content, teaching and learning methods, and also how it is assessed. It includes what is learnt both inside and outside the classroom.
Why do we want our curriculum to look like this? Our curriculum should…
Enable our students to stand shoulder to shoulder with any person from any other background
Enable our students to be happy and successful adults in every aspect of their lives
Enable our students to gain “deep” and powerful knowledge
Ensure students have good understanding of and the confidence and skills to decode unfamiliar text
Engage students and inspire their curiosity and develop a genuine love of learning
Be inclusive by ensuring equity as well as equality
Develop their character to ensure they become socially responsible
We have 5 personal qualities that are woven throughout our curriculum.
Quality What do we mean by this?
Independent An independent student has a positive attitude towards study, they have the ability to think and work independently. They persevere and complete tasks. They have an enquiring mind and work effectively on
their own or in groups. They are a problem solver who has critical thinking skills – they examine all possibilities and come up with multiple solutions. They know how to carry out their own research. They are
not fazed by new situations. They plan their time carefully and meet deadlines. They are intrinsically motivated. They don’t just memorize, they ask ”Why” and formulate answers based on real world
observation and intelligent deduction. They have an uncanny ability to read, visualise or kinaesthetically instruct themselves. They know their own preferred learning style and use it to good effect. No matter the
topic or subject, they will find ways to understand the material. They are Intellectually curious.
Committed They can see the positive in all situations. They can cheer themselves up – they are resilient. They enjoy learning. They know what they have to do and do it without anyone having to tell them. They don’t give
up. They strive to understand a concept as much as possible on their own before asking for help. They also apply self-discipline in not finding the easy answer to a problem. If they start something, they stick at it.
Their attendance is outstanding. They see the big picture and think broadly.
Reflective They know what they are learning, why and how they are learning it. They know themselves – know where they have been and where they want to go in the future They are able to evaluate themselves identifying their own strengths and weaknesses and learn from their mistakes. They are willing to admit when they
don’t understand something. They are honest and work with integrity. They are aware of their own motivation, attitudes and ideas and change these when needed. They can identify things that block their learning and develop strategies to remove these blocks. They identify their learning priorities by setting
targets for the short, medium and longer term.
Courageous They take risks. They show curiosity and seek out ways to explore. They can perform when under pressure. They believe in themselves – they know who they are and what they stand for. They are passionate about
their beliefs and values and have consistent, predictable behaviour. They know the difference between right and wrong. They back up their words with actions – they know it’s not enough to talk about
something, instead they act. They are not deterred by adversity or afraid of what people may think of them. They put other people’s needs ahead of their own. They aren’t afraid to swim against the tide or
challenge the status quo. They run towards problems and deal with them rather than running away. They are change masters - they step out of their comfort zones to meet the challenges that lie ahead. They
follow their intuition.
Effective communicator
They can make and take effective notes. They have great presentation skills and communicate effectively when speaking and writing. They have good reading, writing and analysis skills. They are fun to work with. They understand things from other people’s perspectives and show empathy. They seek to be understood and understand others. They openly seek and share information and knowledge. They are good listeners
and use body language, eye contact, hand gestures and tone of voice to convey their messages. They speak and write with concision and clarity. They are open minded and avoid being drawn into situations. Good
communicators recognise the value of positive thinking and offset negative feedback with positive comments.

This year the curriculum has been altered by introducing communication into the curriculum – where there is a focus on developing reading, oracry and writing. We have replaced an accelerated reader lesson and one art lesson in order to create the time for this subject.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum Organisation 2019 - 2020 In common with many other schools we currently offer a two year Key Stage 4. In Key Stage 4, the compulsory subjects English, mathematics, science and physical education are taught explicitly. The vast majority of students study a humanities based subject, choosing from either Geography or History. In addition, students choose three option subjects at the end of Year 9. The PSHCREE curriculum is covered through a discrete “Ethics” lesson in Year 10 and through the tutorial programme drop-down days in Year 11 Year 11 also have 2 tutorial intervention sessions where they study additional English, Maths or Science. During the options process, students are banded into four pathways:
