What is the CURE Foundation? • The CURE Foundation is a national

charitable organization that raises funds for breast cancer research, equipment and community programs

• It was founded in 1996 by a breast cancer survivor, Diane Proulx‐Guerrera who wanted to do her part to help others impacted by the disease

• She and her family created the foundation and initiated its flagship fundraising event, National Denim Day

• In 2018, Diane Proulx‐Guerrera and her husband, Salvatore Guerrera were appointed members of the Order of Canada for their philanthropic efforts in support of research into breast and prostate cancer, autism spectrum disorders, and intellectual disabilities.

What is National Denim Day?

• Every year, on the Tuesday after Mother’s Day, close to 3000 volunteer CURE ambassadors organize National Denim Day in their work place.

• The event is simple: wear denim and CURE’s pink ribbon and make a donation to CURE.

• By mobilizing Canadians from coast to coast to coast, from all walks of life and from every age, our goal is for everyone to know they can make a difference in the fight against breastcancer.

Promoting Breast Health

• CURE reminds women that breast health is a key component to overall health. When it comes to checking your breasts, it is essential to know your body and what is normal for you.

• Since 2004, CURE has created and distributed Breast Self Exam cardsreminding women to check their breastsevery month, whether in the shower, standing in front of a mirror or lying down

Purchasing Medical

Equipment

• CURE is dedicated to ensuring hospital centers and clinics across Canada are equipped with the tools needed to diagnose and treat breast cancer

• These include digital mammogram machines, MRIs, ultrasound machines, intra‐operative devices, tools to treat lymphedema, among others.

• Better equipment means reduced wait times for patients, reduced anxiety during the wait for test results, increased access to screening, fewer appointments, better care.

Purchasing Medical Equipment: The Perometer at the Surrey Hospital and Outpatient Centre

• The Perometer is the gold standard for detecting lymphedema, leading to a timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

• While most people who have gone through breast cancer treatment can hope to move on and leave the disease in their past, about 25% of patients are left with a life‐altering condition called lymphedema. The result of blocked or damaged lymph nodes surrounding the breast, chest and arms, this condition leaves patients with swollen arms, chest, etc. When detected early, lymphedema’s symptoms can be managed.

Purchasing Medical Equipment: The Rad.Onc. Bra at the McGill University Health Centre, Quebec

• When two experienced radio‐oncology technologists at the Cedars Cancer Centre of the MUHC witnessed too many of their breast cancer patients suffering needlessly from severe burns caused by radiotherapy, they decided to take matters in to their own hands.

• Introducing the Rad.Onc.Bra, a medical sleeve that better positions the breast and alleviates the painful side effects of radiotherapy.

• CURE is proud to support this innovative project and is committed to 3 years of seed funding with the goal of fostering its development and eventual accessibility beyond the MUHC.

Funding Vital Research• Providing financial support for breast cancer research at Canada’s top institutions has always been a driving force in CURE’s mission.

• Through strategic partnerships with Canada’s top institutions, the foundation invests in basic, translational and clinical research

Funding Vital Research

• Dr. Mark Basik is Attending Surgical Oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal

• Among a number of important research initiatives, Dr. Basik and his team are focused on better understanding drug resistant cells.

• While breast cancer is commonly treated with a variety of therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation, not all cancerous cells are destroyed using these methods. If cells are not destroyed, the disease can continue to wreak havoc in the body. Figuring out why some cells are resistant to certain breast cancer therapies is an important step in finding a cure.

• Inspired by the research of Dr. Don McKenzie, Professor and Director of the Division of Sports Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, dragon boat racing has become an international movement among breast cancer survivors seeking exercises to build strength and increase mobility, with the added benefit of developing social connections with others who understand their journey.
