The Cross+Roads Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church | 60 Traverse Road | Newport News VA 23606 March 2020 Volume/Year 21, Issue #6 With the arrival of March, we will usher in the sacred period referred to as Great and Holy Lent. I recommend two books for our parishioners to read during this period of time if you have not already done so. The first being the classic “Great Lent: Journey to Pascha” by Father Alexander Schmemann of Blessed Memory. In this book Father Schmemann examined the meanings of Great and Holy Lent through the Sundays leading up to the period, but also the meanings of the special Lenten services. The second book I recommend is “The Lenten Covenant” by Father Leonidas Contos of Blessed Memory. Father Contos, like Father Schmemann examines the Sundays leading up to Lent and highlights the themes of the Five Sundays in Lent, but also the services of Holy Week and Bright Week. A time of spiritual exercise is upon us. Many of us have been advised by our physicians to undertake a plan of exercise in order to maintain good health. The spiritual exercise that we are to undertake should not be avoided as we tend to avoid going to the gym, but rather we should make the strong effort in attending the Lenten services prescribed by the Church. The services of Compline and the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts give each of us the opportunity in assisting the chantors with the various readings that are contained in the services. Participating in these services will help condition our bodies. I wish everyone a glorious Great and Holy Lenten period, and may we continue to grow spiritually as a community. They had been waiting for their friend Jesus to come and heal Lazarus or for the eventual miracle to restore him. The sisters were desperate. Only Jesus and a miracle could save Lazarus now. In the aftermath some would claim that Lazarus was in a coma and was not really dead, but the Angel of Death has never failed. Make no mistake. After four days in the tomb, Lazarus was dead. And then Christ arrived. The Resurrection and the Life wept and called for the tomb to be opened. Christ said, "Lazarus Come Forth," and Lazarus emerged from the tomb into the greatest of miracles and hopes, and one that Christ was to repeat a short time later with his own death and resurrection. Thereafter, there is no reference to Lazarus of Bethany in the scriptures, and he must not be confused with Lazarus the beggar mentioned in Luke 16 in the parable of the Rich Man. We can assume that Lazarus of The Four Days had the privilege to die twice, and in between deaths, Orthodox tradition has him escaping to Cyprus whereupon he is appointed the first Bishop of Kition (Larnaka), Cyprus by Paul and Barnabas. After his first glimpse at the Kingdom, Lazarus lived a pious life until he was finally laid to rest thirty years later. Dying one time is enough for any human, but if that first glimpse of the Kingdom is the only one we get, and if, as Jesus and St. John the Baptist had preached, the Kingdom is at hand, then how does one prepare for the journey? Jesus was quite specific. In Matthew 16:24-26 he states "“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." It sounds simple enough but Orthodoxy provides us with a map to our destination. One must attend church services regularly and partake of the sacraments, read scripture, be eager and constant in the service to others, i.e. taking up one's own cross and that of one's neighbor, adopt a sense of charity and unshakeable faith in Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. Then we can await that glorious day when the Voice calls us to "Come Forth." - Offered by Nick Vrettos Chairman, Stewardship Committee MARCH SUNDAYS 1 Forgiveness Sunday 8 Sunday of Orthodoxy 15 Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas 22 Sunday of Holy Cross 29 Sunday of St. John Climacus

And by means ofwood and water he saved thepeople of Israel, revealing theCross by the wood, HolyBaptism by water (Exod. 14:15-31). Paul, who had looked uponthe mysteries, says openly,'They were all baptized untoMoses in the cloud' (I Cor.10:2). He also bears witnessthat, even before the eventsconcerning the sea and his staff,Moses willingly endured Christ'sCross, 'Esteeming', he says,'the reproach of Christ greaterriches than the treasures ofEgypt' (Heb. 11:26). For theCross is the reproach of Christfrom the standpoint of foolishmen. As Paul himself says ofChrist, 'He endured the cross, despising the shame' (Heb.12:2). WISDOM OF THEFATHERS... he that is not covetous,

will be also more disposed foralmsgiving. He that fasts islight, and winged, and prayswith wakefulness, andquenches his wicked lusts, andpropitiates God, and humbleshis soul when lifted up.Therefore even the apostleswere almost always fasting. -St. John Chrysostom, Homily57 on Matthew 17,4,5.
