The Chaplain’s Note Pad:Lent: A time of self-Denial

The universal catholic church is busy with the spiritual exercis-es of Lenten season. In this season we remember the forty days offasting of Jesus and his passion, crucifixion, death and resurrection. For a catholic, this season has a great deal of importance in his or herlife. This is a time of spiritual revival and renewal of the holiness ofeach person. The Lent also reminds us about the greatness of repent-ance, prayer, fasting, abstinence, almsgiving and above all else our rec-onciliation with God and our own fellow beings.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “the real aim of Lent is, above all else, to pre-pare people for the celebration of the death and Resurrection of Christ…the better the prep-aration the more effective the celebration will be. One can effectively relive the mystery onlywith purified mind and heart. The purpose of Lent is to provide that purification by weaningmen from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire todo God’s will and to make His kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts.”

One of my favorite days of this season is Mounty Thursday. The liturgical celebrationsof Mounty Thursday truly portray the true theological message of Christianity. On MountyThursday we commemorate the institution of the two important sacraments of the Catholicchurch, namely The Eucharist and the Priesthood. As we all know both these sacraments aredeeply interconnected. Both sacraments are sacraments of God’s mercy and His love. Bothsacraments are sacraments of service. In Eucharist God is serving himself to us and in priest-hood the priest is serving God on behalf of humanity.

As these sacraments play a vital role in the continued existence and presence of thecatholic church in this world, every disciple also has to take into heart this attitude of humili-ty and service. Humility and an attitude of service can be born only from love. That is why,God who is love, humbles himself to take up the cross and serves his body and blood to his dis-ciples. Jesus washes the feet of his disciples only because he wanted to teach that if theylove somebody they have to be ready to serve the other without failure.

As we journey through this season of lent, let us take into our heart that spirit of Je-sus. As knights, let us continue to practice these two great pillars of Christian spirituality, namely humility and service.Wish you all a grace filled fruitful season of Lent!

May God bless you all!Reverend Binoy P. Davis

Request for Help for Assist MEAssist ME needs volunteers to periodically pick up and deliver home medical/mobility equip-ment to low income, uninsured patients.Assist ME is a non-profit run by a fellow St. Matthew Knight that takes in gently used medicalequipment, cleans it up and gifts it to low income, uninsured patients. Requests come in fromreferral sources (case workers, social workers, discharge planners) at local hospitals and inthe community. The equipment is donated by parishioners, other individuals, Goodwill, localDME dealers, hospitals and St. Matthew Donated Goods ministry. Assist ME also does somelimited fund raising to buy manual wheelchairs when equipment donations are not enough tomeet the needs. When we get a request, we would ask one of the volunteers to pick up the equipment at 12636Bannock Drive, Charlotte, NC, which is between Ballantyne and Pineville and deliver it to thepatient, often at Carolinas Medical Center on 1000 Blythe or to the patient’s home. The re-quests typically have a one day lead time, sometimes less. We could control the number of re-quests to one a week if that makes it more manageable for the volunteer. If you are interested, please call Jack Sheehan at 704 620 1440.

AttentionBrothers All,

Starting in April’s newsletter we will now be accepting referrals for your business/expertiseto make available to all your fellow brothers.
