Money had been taken, as was jewellery from the master bedroom closet. “Every piece of jewellery, and all my old cufflinks from my business days when I wore French cuffs, were all gone,” said Roland. The jewellery having belonged to their mothers and grandmothers, had sentimental value and is irreplaceable. but it happened at this house and I readily confess it’s not the smallest of houses in Creemore, it’s going to happen somewhere else,” said Rowland. He said people need to be careful and if they see suspicious behaviour, take care to assess the situation and report it to the police if necessary.

Rowland said the police have detailed descriptions and evaluations of what was stolen so police will be able to watch for them.

The Flemings are augmenting the reward offered by Crime Stoppers by up to $1,000 for any information that leads to the recovery of the stolen jewellery.

editorial the Way We Were

Editor:Having driven to Collingwood and back during the

Dec. 15 snowstorm and having read today’s headline in The Echo about the serious crash near Avening I am tempted to reflect on the state of winter driving in our region.

At the risk of betraying my age I have been driving for over 50 years and have been involved in motorsports for many of them. From the 1960s to 1980s, I took part in both sports car racing and road rallying including winter rallies. None of these activities have ever frightened me as much as driving on Airport Road in the winter.

Canadian driver’s licence requirements are a farce, compared to those required by most European (especially Scandinavian) countries when it comes to winter driving.

We have no training in skid control, threshold

braking, throttle steering, or any of the other skills necessary for safe winter driving.

While I understand many people cannot afford vehicles with all-wheel drive, stability control, or anti lock brakes all drivers can afford to drive with common sense. In addition, it is time that Ontario, like Quebec, make mandatory winter tires. It should be a cost of driving in this province just like insurance and vehicle maintenance.

On Airport Road I am consistently being passed by drivers far exceeding the speed limit, passing uphill or across double lines in poor visibility, and the most common of all, tailgating. Accidents are not caused by road and weather conditions. They are caused by the stupidity and carelessness of people who somehow feel the laws of physics do not apply to them.

Walter Sickinger,Mulmur.

Editor: Your Dec. 9 editorial hit a nerve. As MP Kellie Leitch looked out her front door, she

could see the people of Creemore assemble for their annual Santa Claus parade a scant two miles away.

Being parachuted into this riding after the Helena Guergis disaster, she really has no obligation to any of us locals other than she needs our vote.

With inborn arrogance typical of the ten-percenters (“call me doctor”), she turned her back on Creemore and joined the party given by Jim Wilson, MPP.

A glass of sherry took preference over the people of her home base. It was simply a come-and-go all afternoon which MPP Jim Wilson gives every year.

Now, my excuse for never voting for her again… I’m searching for a glass of sherry.

John Blohm, Creemore.

Editor: Upon seeing a pre-qualification advertisement

for potential architects, I see the specifications have grown from the approved 6,800 square feet to a whopping 7,500 square feet.

So doing quick math... $3.8 million guaranteed by Thom Paterson grows to $4.2 million?

Again, where is the fiscal responsibility to the Clearview taxpayer?

Merry Christmas. David Witzke, Clearview.

driver’s licensing requirements, a farce

Leitch’s absence from parade hits a nerve

As we prepare to ring in the New Year, we find it is necessary to look back before we can go forward.

In wrapping up our 2016 coverage, we have had the opportunity to look back on the year’s goings on and it has reinforced once again that this is a small but mighty community. There is no lack of content to fill the pages of this newspaper every week so we thank you for your energy and vibrancy.

The Creemore Echo has a bit of a shutdown between Christmas and New Year’s but the final edition of 2016 will go out on Friday, Dec. 30, as if by magic (In reality, it will be Fred, who has been faithfully delivering The Echo for seven years and we are sad to say it will be his final paper route).

The Dec. 30 edition is our annual Year in Review, which highlights the year’s news and events. Please enjoy responsibly.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Where is the fiscal responsibility?

by Basil GuinaneBy Gaslight is a riveting novel that takes the reader from the fog shrouded streets of Victorian London in 1885, to the lawless diamond mines of South Africa and the grim battlefields of the American civil war.

The writer is the Canadian author and poet Steven Price. Price, who lives in Victoria B.C., is the author of two award-winning books of poetry. By Gaslight is his second novel.

T w o c o m p e l l i n g characters are at the heart of this book. Adam Foole, an accomplished gentleman thief with impeccable manners and a hidden past, and William Pinkerton, a dogged American detective who walks the streets of London with a naval Colt revolver at his side believing, “there was not a thief who did not fear him.”

Pinkerton has travelled to London on the hunt for the elusive master criminal Edward Shade. Shade had been a fixation of William’s father, who was the founder of the famous Pinkerton detective agency. William has inherited this fixation and believes Shade is behind a number of unsolved crimes. However, there are some who doubt the existence of Shade believing him to be more fiction than fact. Pinkerton is intent on proving them wrong.

Foole and Pinkerton are initially drawn together by the investigation of a murder and they form an uneasy alliance in order to solve it. The victim is Charlotte Reckitt, who Pinkerton believed could lead him to Edward Shade. She was also the former lover of Adam Foole who had first met her in South Africa when she and her uncle were the accomplices of Foole in a plot

to steal diamonds. Foole had recently returned to London at her request for help.

The search to find Charlotte’s killer takes Foole and Pinkerton into the underworld of Victorian London. Price brings this world to vivid life as Foole

and Pinkerton crisscross the city in hansom cabs in search of answers to the mystery of Charlotte’s murder. This tour of London’s underbelly includes opium dens, séances, prisons cells, pick pockets and murderers and is capped by a harrowing visit to the city’s vast sewer network which is home to some of the cruelest criminals in London.

As the investigation progresses it becomes apparent to the reader that Foole and Pinkerton have a deep connection that is related to their past. In bringing these connections to light the story skips backward and forward in time in order to show how the two have much more in common than they realize.

In addition to Foole and Pinkerton, the book is populated by an array colourful characters. These include menacing henchmen, juvenile criminals, opium addicts, fake mediums, bent lawyers and unscrupulous gang bosses. In short, just the type of people you would never want to meet in real life but make for an engaging story.

Price has written a sprawling novel that would be an ideal book if you are looking for something to curl up with over the holiday season.

By Gaslight (731 pages) is published by McClelland & Stewart.

Thank you to everyone who donated to The Creemore Echo’s toy and food drive this Christmas. Together, we sent two big loads of toys to the Salvation Army Hope Acres and a trunkload of food to the Clearview-Stayner Food Bank, as well as thousands of dollars in cash donations to both organizations. The gifts, food and money will be distributed within the area.

by Trina Berlo Creemore Springs Brewery has partnered with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to create a unique beer in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the donation of the Creemore Nature Preserve, a 203-acre property gifted to the NCC in 1996 by Don and Mary Mingay, which is why it is better known locally as the Mingay Tract.

In addition to water from the Creemore Nature Preserve going into Creemore Springs brews, the 20th anniversary saison is also infused with the plants that grow within the preserve. A small batch of raspberry ginger saison was set to brew Dec. 14 at BATCH gastrobrewery in Toronto, an affiliate of Creemore Springs, under the expertise of brewmaster Andrew Bartle.

He and NCC program director

for Georgian Bay-Huronia Kristyn Ferguson took a summer stroll through the property to find the local, native ingredients that would be the basis of the new beer: wild ginger and common red raspberry.

“It was exciting to learn about the process from start to finish – how hot water, milled grain, the addition later that afternoon of ginger sourced through BATCH’s kitchen, and the addition in a few days of 250 pounds of raspberries can almost magically, turn itself into a delicious beer that was not all that long ago just an idea,” said Ferguson.

The beer will now sit and age for several weeks. The batch will yield about 500-750 bottles. The beer will be released in January 2017.

The NCC has plans for launch events in the New Year.
