INTRODUCTION

On July 4, 1976, the people of the United States w i l l celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of thei r Independence from England. A l l across the nation there w i l l be many and varied celebrations of this h i s t o r i c event. In an effort to personalize the 200 years of American history and to ide n t i f y those who have gone before, I recently began gathering data on a family tree. I wanted to discover just who my ancestors were and i f possible, something about t h e i r l i v e s . I wasn't looking for heros or v i l l i a n s and I found none. But I was seeking a glimpse of the past, a past i n which our forefathers worked steadily and hard, unsung and unrecognized, to bequeath to us a l l , that heritage that we now enjoy and sh a l l soon celebrate.

My br i e f sketch i s only a beginning, an outline of names and numbers, A f u l l e r history can be written but i t w i l l need the efforts of someone with more time and talent than I possess.

N O T E

I would l i k e to emphasize that this book i s not a history of the Crabtree family, for such a history would f i l l many volumes. The book i s not an attempt to be comprehensive but I had reached a point where I f e l t i t was necessary to organize what material I had compiled and to make i t available to others. This compilation of data i s limited by the limitations of the sources. The information i s accurate i n so far as my sources were accurate but there are some mistakes, due to errors i n Courthouse records, Census records, personal papers and i n the memories of contributors.

In Chapter I I , there are several names l i s t e d at the top of each page. These names give the male Crabtree lineage of the particular person back to Solomon Crabtree (1779-1863). These names make i t easier to trace the lineage back to the e a r l i e r ancestors.

SOURCES OF INFORMATION

I would l i k e to especially thank the following people for t h e i r help i n compiling this information on the Crabtree Family. It was through many hours of conversation with these individuals that much of the material was obtained.

CHAUNCY R. CRABTREE GRACE CRABTREE FERGUSON GOLDIE CRABTREE LEWIS ELLA CRABTREE BLANKENSHIP

I would also l i k e to give credit to the late Strother Crabtree. During the 1930's, he compiled information on the family but was unable to f i n i s h the work due to f a i l i n g health. His notes, which were forwarded to me by Chauncy Crabtree, formed the basic groundwork around which t h i s book was organized.

The nane CRABTREE is of English derivation.

The original hearer of the nane Crabtree was in sone

way associated with a crab apple orchard. He lived

near one, worked i n one, owned one, etc. Taking the nane

of an occupation or loc a l i t y was a nethod of local identi

fication, as i n , "John-of-the-crabtrees", which becane

pemanent when written records becane required in

Medieval England. Prior to 1700 there are nany

occurances of the nane in the records of the County York

(Yorkshire) i n northeastern England.

In England during the 1600's nany s n a i l farners were driven fron the land which t h e i r f a n i l i e s had t i l l e d for generations because of the practice of "enclosure". This was the action whereby the great land owners fenced i n th e i r land and used i t for large flocks of sheep. The European denand for wool made rai s i n g sheep nuch nore profitable than the feudal systen of land use, whereby farners, who were bound to the land, would pay a portion of th e i r harvest to the land owning nobles. This neant that there were nany farners who were cut off fron th e i r t r a d i t i o n a l l i n k to the land and th e i r source of incone. This sturdy stock of yeonan farners were prine candidates to be recruited to settle the vast enptiness of the American colonies.

Unlike nost of the other American colonies, Maryland was organized as a proprietorship. The King of England granted the ownership of th i s colony to George Calvert the Lord of Baltimore. Lord Baltinore, wishing to gain incone fron his vast holdings i n America, gave grants of land to s e t t l e r s , provided they would inprove the land and pay hin a s n a i l yearly rent. In t h i s way Lord Baltinore could accumulate a fortune i n rent monies and extend his p o l i t i c a l power i n the New World. Lord Baltimore was Catholic but he believed that only by opening his colony to settlers of a l l faiths could the colony grow and prosper. Hence, Maryland was among the f i r s t colonies to establish religious toleration as a part of public policy. This brought many Protestants from England and from neighboring colonies that were more r e s t r i c t i v e i n the i r religious practices.

WILLIAM CRABTREE, a farmer who probably l i v e d near Leeds i n Yorkshire County, England, received a grant of land of several hundred acres i n Baltimore County, Maryland. He was no doubt offered this land grant to encourage him to migrate to America and settle on the lands of Lord Baltimore.

According to family t r a d i t i o n WILLIAM CRABTREE (I) was born i n 1683 i n Yorkshire County, England. In 1705 he brought his wife, Jane, and infant son to America. The family settled about 30 miles northeast of present day Baltinore, Maryland along Deer Creek, which flows into the Susquehanna River near Port Deposit, The Crabtrees were members of the Church of England and attended the Anglican Church i n Old Joppatowne, Md.

The Crabtree fanily grew and prospered in the New World. Willian increased his land holdings and was even able to purchase the services of an Irish indentured servant named Alexander Anderson. Willian had a second servant as referred to in his will plus a Negro who nay have been an indentured servant or possibly a slave. Il/sryy, A. 9}\e>J\7Sl* f C^rse. J, dun 4- Ut )v\ WS<)

WILLIAM CRABTREE ( I I I ) , son of W i l l i a n Crabtree and Mary Pyke, was born 22 DEC 1726 i n Baltinore County, Maryland. In that county on 27 MAY 1746 he narried Hannah Whitaker, who was born about 1725 i n K i n g s v i l l e , Maryland.

W i l l i a n Crabtree, l i k e his forobcarers, was a successful farner, but land was getting scarce i n B a l t i nore County. Thc flood of settlers into the area had boosted land prices and i t made i t d i f f i c u l t to obtain new lands on which to grow the food necessary to feed a nrowing f a n i l y . W i l l i a n needed nore land and land that he could afford. During tho nid-1700* s, reports were reaching Baltinore County of a vast f e r t i l e v alley to the Southeast, whore good farn land was available for the asking. This area was the upper Shenandoah Valley and the various v a l l i e s that conprise the Great Valley of V i r g i n i a . So, after his father's death, i n about thc year 1758, W i l l i a n noved his f a n i l y southward through the Shenandoah Valley to Bedford County, V i r g i n i a , (Tho area he settled i s just east of present day Roanoke) This area was then the Western f r o n t i e r of the Virginian colony. As did his neighbors, W i l l i a n served i n the Bedford County M i l i t i a to protect the connunity fron Indian attacks which were prevalent during the Ercnch and IÏICLÍCIÏI

W i l l i a n Crabtree (III) prospered i n Bedford County, his f a n i l y grew larger and he was ablo to obtain a considerable anount of land fron the government. In July of 1768 he received a land grant of 378 acres i n Bedford County on Cub Branch, a west branch of G i l l s Creek. He also obtained 222 acres on Maggotty Creek i n Bedford County. . .

By the late 1760's, the area where he lxved xn Bedford County was becoming t h i c k l y settled. His sons were coning of age and they wanted fams of t h e i r own. Once again the Crabtree f a n i l y was i n need of good, low cost, farn land. This neant noving further West, followxng the f r o n t i e r . Sonetine between the years 1768 and 1772, W i l l i a n noved his f a n i l y fron Bedford County to Washxngton County, V i r g i n i a . (The area he settled i s near S a l t v i l l e , i n present day Snyth County, Virginia.) The area near S a l t v i l l e was at that tine known as Big Buffalo Lick. The s a l t l i c k located there was an attraction for allotypes of gane, especially elk, deer, bear, and buffalo. This neant excellent hunting for tho s e t t l e r s . There was also plenty of good f a m land i n the area available for the taking. Also the sal t fron the l i c k was used as a preservative, an essential cormodity to the pioneers.

So i t was there, near S a l t v i l l e , that W i l l i a n Crabtree spent his l a s t days. He was a well-known farner and woodsnan. Ho had hundreds of acres of land

on which ho raised c a t t l e , sheep, and a variety of crops. He raised a large f a n i l y , with four of his sons taking a very active part i n the Anerican Revolution. W i l l i a n died i n the Spring of 1777.

Sons of WILLM CRABTREE and tho REVOLUTIONARY WAR

WILLIAM, the eldest son, was active as an o f f i c e r i n the Washington County M i l i t i a during the Revolutionary War. He nanned the various garrisons and forts along the Holston and Clinch Rivers which protected the settlers fron B r i t i s h inspired Indian attacks. He fought at the Battle of Pt. Pleasant i n October of 1774. Ho olso fought at the Battle of King's Mountain i n South Carolina i n 1780. In this battle the backwoods nen of Southwest V i r g i n i a defeated a B r i t i s h force under Col. Ferguson. This ended Gen. Cornwallis threat to the fro n t i e r settlements of North Carolina and V i r g i n i a . I t enabled the people of the fro n t i e r to continue i n assisting the Continental Amy who were fighting the B r i t i s h i n tho major battles i n thc East with food, lead, gunpowder, and other provisions necessary i n the war e f f o r t .

ABRAHAM served i n the Washington County M i l i t i a . Ho served as a spy along the Clinch River Valley looking for si^ns of possible Indian attack. He did garrison duty along the forts of the Clinch and Holston Rivers. He participated i n the expedition against the Cherokee towns i n eastern Tennessee. I t was during t h i s expedition that ho came clown with fever and disease that a f f l i c t e d him a l l his l i f e .

ISAAC also served i n the V i r g i n i a M i l i t i a as did his brothers. In 1773 ho was tho lone survivor of the Janes Boone Massacre. A small group of settlers lea by Daniel Boone's son, James, was attacked by Indians. This attack convinced Daniel Boone to postpone his s e t t l i n g of Kentucky u n t i l the Indians becane less hostile.

JACOB also served i n the V i r g i n i a M i l i t i a and did hie part i n protecting the V i r g i n i a f r o n t i e r fron B r i t i s h inspired Indian raids. Possibly the most memorable event i n the l i f e of Jacob Crabtree was when he accompanied Daniel Boone on tho expedition that blazed the Wilderness Road through Cumberland Gap to the s i t e on the Kentucky River that was to become Boonesborough.

ABRAHAM CRABTREE

VETERAN OE THE REVOLUTION

Abraham Crabtree, son of Willian Crabtree ( I I I ) , was born i n Baltinore County, Maryland on June 6, 1750. As a boy, he noved with his f a n i l y to Bedford County, V i r g i n i a , and l a t e r noved with then to Washington County, V i r g i n i a , s e t t l i n g in the S a l t v i l l e area.

*(Most of the infomation that I have about hin i s taken fron his w i l l and fron a deposition he gave before the Russell County Court i n 1834 by which he made application for a pension due hin for his services i n the Revolutionary War. Both of these documents are on f i l e i n the Russell County Courthouse, Lebanon, Virg i n i a . Other information i s fron the County Court records of the Virginia counties of Fincastle, Washington, and Russell.)*

Abrahan Crabtree's wife was named MARY. Their children were SOLOMON CRABTREE, RUTH SPEER, and MARY . CRABTREE. Tho records of Abrahan Crabtree i n Fincastle County are spotty at best. (This area l i t e r becane Washington County). His nane appears on a tax l i s t i n June of 1770. In early July of 1773 he was a juror and l a t e r a witness before the Fincastle Court. A Fincastle survey dated 30 MAY 1774 shows that Abrahan Crabtree owned 104 acres of land situated on both sides of the North Fork of the Holston River joining and between tracts known as Paw Paw Bottom and Clay Lick. This i s the area between the present town cf S a l t v i l l e and the Clinch Mountain.

In August and Septenber of 1774, Abrahan served with the V i r g i n i a M i l i t i a under Capt. Janes Thonpson. He was stationed at Fork Blackmore, which i s located i n the Clinch River Valley about forty miles west of S a l t v i l l e . He manned the fort's garrison and scouted the Clinch Valley for signs of hostile Indians. Durxng the summer and f a l l of 1774, the Indians who l i v e d i n southern Ohio had made many raids against thc V i r g i n i a Frontier. Abraham, being 24 years of age, was assigned to thc force that was to defend the fro n t i e r settlements while the nore experienced frontiersmen i n the M i l i t i a were to attack thc Indians at their Ohio encampments. This ."roup of Virginia M i l i t i a , under Col. Andrew Lewis, marched north and engaged thc Indians at the Battle cf P"fc 1?1 G Cl S dil."fc e

In"June'of 1776, Abrahan Crabtree served under Col. Arthur Canpbell as a scout, patrolling for signs of Indian a c t i v i t y along the North Fork of the Holston River. Later i n the sunner of 1776, he joined the expedition of Col. Willian Christian which ranged south-

ward to attack thc Cherokee i n Tennessee. In the stimers of 1777 and 1778, he again served i n garrisons along the Holston River.

In A p r i l of 1777, Abraham was named administrator of the estate of his father, William Crabtree. In September of 1777 he was appointed as a commissioner to locate a road from the North Fork of the Holston to the Courthouse at Abingdon. In the early 1780's Abraham i s l i s t e d as participating i n thc functions of the Washington County Court by serving as a juror, witness and bondsman. In the early 1790's, Abraham Crabtree moved his family westward across Clinch Mountain and into the Clinch River Valley near New Garden i n Russell County, V i r g i n i a . He had a farm of several hundred acres on Cedar Creek .on what was known as House and Barn Mountain. The reason for moving into the Clinch Valley was probably the a v a i l a b i l i t y of better and cheaper land. This, of course, was often the prime motivation of many pioneer s e t t l o r s . Between 1797 and 1806, Abraham acquired about 850 acres of land i n the Clinch Valley.

The next information that I have on Abraham Crabtree i s a petition to tho V i r g i n i a Legislature requesting f i n a n c i a l assistance i n compensation for i l l n e s s contracted while serving i n the Vi r g i n i a M i l i t i a . Listed i n the Russell County Census of 1830 as-head of the household i s Abraham Crabtree, aged 70-80; his wife, aged 70-80; and a daughter, aged 30-40. The next reference to Abraham Crabtree i s dated June 3, 1834, when he appeared before the Russell County Court to make a sworn statement i n applying for a Revolutionary War pension. He made his w i l l on 29 A p r i l 1838. He died i n May of that year, probably on the 2nd. The w i l l was probated on 5 June 1838. Abraham would have been 88 years old on June 6th of that year.

Following i s a copy of Abraham Crabtree's W i l l , a copy of his petition to the V i r g i n i a Legislature, and a copy of the deposition ho gave concerning his service i n the Revolutionary War.

To the Honorable . . . Legislature of Vi r g i n i a

The petition of ABRAHAM CRABTREE, an old soldier, hunbly represents that i n the year 1768 i n the f i r s t settlement of tho Western part of Vi r g i n i a , thc inhabitants were frequently disturbed by the Indians and had frequently nearly abandoned the country; to prevent t h i s , the young men of that clay i n that part of the country were kept i n an almost perpetual state of war . . . . from exposure to cold, without tents or blankets, and to hunger and alone i n the woods without supplies. At that time, your petitioner, a young man of 17 years of age, was one of 20 mon who were a l l the men i n the present county of Washington and on whom the families there relyed on for protection. This kept him always exposed, not only to the enemy but to the inclement weather of the mountains more te r r i b l e than the Indians. This continued to be the l i f e of your petitioner u n t i l the year 1776 when he was called on to march, under Captain Aaron Lewis, commanded by Colonel William Christian, on the Cherokee expedition. On that expedition, your petitioner suffered from exposure of every kind, being employed as a spy, contracted a disease i n his leg, that has distressed him from that day to t h i s . He has suffered d i f f i c u l t i e s of bodily i n f i r m i t y . . . made out by his individual labor to support himself without other help t i 11 now. He i s 79 years old and those diseases that he contracted i n the amy of youth so affected him as to ronder him helpless. He now, when about to die, asks his country for the f i r s t time to help him, relying on the younger men of the present clay, that his prayer w i l l be heard, only a l i t t l e while and their charity may stop . . a few years and he w i l l join his friends of '76.

ABRAHAM CRABTREE

Russell County On this 3rd day of June i n the year 1834 personally

appeared i n open court hefore the County Court of Russell County aforesaid now s i t t i n g , Abraham Crabtree, a resident of the said county of Russell and State of V i r g i n i a aged 84 years on the 6th day of the present month who being f i r s t duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration i n order to obtain the benefit of the provision of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United ( ? ) under the following named officers and served as herein stated v i z i n the year 1774 and i n the l a t t e r part of the month of August of that year, (he being at that time a resident of Washington County i n the State of Virginia.) he belonged to a m i l i t i a company then under the command of Capt. James Thompson, and by whom he was commanded to march i n the l a t t e r part of the said month of August to a fort upon Clinch River then and ever since called and known by the name of Blackmores Fort. That they were then upon a spying expedition against the hostile Indians who were then committing constant depredations and massacres upon the frontier settlers upon the western border of V i r g i n i a , then i n a condition almost defenseless. That he remained spying upon and defending that part of the fro n t i e r i n the v i c i n i t y of the said fort for forty days and was then permitted to return to th e i r respective hones without having any engagement with the Indians who about that tine k i l l e d and scalped a nan by the nane of Dale Carter and took fi v e boys as prisoners, that he then renained at hone for a few days and was appointed a Sergeant i n the conpany of the said Captain Janes Thonpson, and renained stationed i n the innediate neighborhood of King's Saltworks for two nonths longer, at which tine the soldiers who had narched fron the sane region of the country against the Shawnee tribe of Indians returned, bringing with then the intelligence that Col. Lewis had succeeded i n defeating the Indians at the battle of the point-(Pt. Pleasant) and his success i n negociating a treaty of peace, and thus putting an end to present d i f f i c u l t i e s ; whereupon the said Abraham Crabtree with his comrades i n the service were then discharged and returned to their respective homes where they expected to remain i n peace.

That i n the year 1776 i n the month of June he, the said Abraham Crabtree, was appointed by Col. Arthur Campbell as an Indian spy to range from Harrison's Fort i n Washington County near the said Saltworks, up and down the valley of the North Fork of Holston River, and continued to range as an Indian spy regularly from the time he commenced for the space of 80 days, at which time Col. William Christy ordered the said Crabtree with a small detachment to take up the l i n e of march against the Cherokee Indians upon Tennessee River, with orders to rendezvous at the Long Islands of Holston River at which place they joined the main army raised for that expedition under the command of the said Col. William Christy. *(The Colonels name was Christian, not Christy)*

At that tine he belonged to the conpany connanded by Capt. Aaron lewis. That pursuant to his order he did rendezvous at the Long Island aforesaid and renained there three or four days and took up the li n e of narch to the Indian towns and at the three springs he, the said Crabtree, was taken with what then was called the slow fever and being unable to narch was sent back again under the care of Thonas Ransey to the Long Islands where he was placed under Major Anthony Blutcher who then had the connand of the fort at that place. The said Crabtree continuing very i l l and altogether unable to perfom any duty i t was proposed that he should be connitted to the M i l i t a r y Hospital. The said Crabtree being however unwilling to go to the hospital, obtained pernission fron Major Blutcher to be placed at the hone of the said Thonas Ransey about three n i l e s distant fron the said f o r t , at which place he renained fron that tine drawing his regular rations as a soldier i n actual service u n t i l the last week i n February 1777 when he was taken hone by his brother and his own wife who cane after hin.

That i n the sunner of 1777 and i n the sunner of 1778 he each year renained stationed at Harrison's fort and Vance's fort i n the County of Washington, but was during that tine_ neasurably was unable to render any essential service to his country except sone garrison duty.

That he has no docunenting evidence of his services and never had any written discharge fron his o f f i c e r s . That he can produce sone evidence of his services i f ever he s h a l l be able to procure i t but fron his circunstances i n l i f e which are very limited and hunble and fron personal d i s a b i l i t y , he fears he w i l l not be able to get the necessary proof i n tine to relieve hin fron his present wants. He hereby relinquishes every c l a i n whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, and declares that his nane i s not on the pension r o l l of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

SOLOMON CRABTREE, son of Abraham and Mary Crabtree, was born near S a l t v i l l e , V i rginia on February 18, 1779. He noved with his f a n i l y across Clinch Mountain and grew to nanhood on his father's farn near New Garden, i n Russell County, V i r g i n i a . Here he becane quite prosperous as i s demonstrated by the tems of his w i l l . He narried Susannah Thonpson, daughter of Willian Thonpson, about the year 1799. To this union were born eleven children; Jacob, Hiran, John, Janes, Wesley, Nancy, Mary, Celia, Elizabeth, Naona, and Rebecca.

The occurrence of the nane "Wesley" inplies that the f a n i l y were Methodists, as this denonination was f i r s t introduced to Southwestern Vir g i n i a i n the 1780's. Solonon i s l i s t e d i n the Russell County Census of 1820, 1830 and 1840. In February of 1849 he sold his property i n Russell County, Vi r g i n i a . I t i s assumed that at about this time he moved to Wayne County (W.Va.) where he settled at the head of Big Hurricane Creek, near Ft. Gay. His farn was at the base of the h i l l where the Crabtree-Thonpson Cenetery i s now located. Solonon's name appears i n the 1850 and 1860 Wayne County Census. According to the Census, his sons Wesley and Janes nade the nove to Wayne County at about the sane time, that i s the mid-1840's. Solomon's sons Hiram and John were already i n the area, but his eldest son, Jacob did not make the move to Wayne County u n t i l about 1858.

In the 1850 Wayne County Census, Wesley l i v e d on the sane farm with his father. In the 1860 Census Jacob l i v e d on the same farm as his father.

Except for his w i l l , the only other information I have about Solomon Crabtree i s that i n 1850 he owned three slaves; a 55 year old female named May, a 23 year old male and a 10 year old female. According to Grace Crabtree Ferguson, the young male slave was sold to a farmer i n Vi r g i n i a and that after the Emancipation, he returned to Wayne County and li v e d with his mother May u n t i l she died,

Susannah Crabtree, Solomon's wife, died June 28, 1860 at the age of 80. Solomon made his w i l l on June 19, 1862. Solomon died December 22, 1863 and was buried beside his wife at the Crabtree-Thonpson Cenetery at the head of Big Hurricane Creek.

Following i s a copy of Solonon Crabtree's W i l l which i s on f i l e á, the Wayne County Courthouse. There i s also a page of Census infornation about Solonon Crabtree. Most of the Crabtrees i n Wayne County and surrounding areas are di r e c t l y descended fron Solomon Crabtree through one of his five sons.

JOHN CRABTREE

It i s known that Solonon Crabtree had a son naned JOHN, f o r he i s nentionod i n Solonon's W i l l . In the 1030 Russell Co., VA, Census, there i s l i s t e d a John Crabtree who l i v e d i n the sane area as Solonon Crabtree. The genealogical writings of Strother Crabtree also refer to a John Crabtree as the son of Solonon Crabtree. Strother Crabtree said that John's wife was naned "Betsey" and that he had at least three childrens Louisa, who narried a Rice; Jacob and Wil l i a n . Strothcr Crabtree writes that he had been told that John and f a n i l y noved to Henry County, Missouri, but ho was uncertain of this.

The following i n f ornat ion concerning John Crabtree i s based on speculation and the fact that nost of John Crabtree's f a n i l y noved to the Ft. Gay, W.Va. area i n the 104-0's. Fron the 1040's to at least the late 1060's, there was a John Crabtree who lived i n the Louisa, Kentucky area, owning land on Two-nil e Creek. He was a lunbernan and land speculator. The only association with the Wayne County Crabtree's that I could f i n d i s the fact that on OCT 16, 1030, this John Crabtree narried Elizabeth Short i n Louisa, Kentucky, Three years l a t e r i n Louisa, Hiran Crabtree, son of Solonon Crabtree, narried Evaline Short. It i s not known i f these g i r l s were related, or i f this John and Hiran Crabtree were related. This John Crabtree was l i s t e d i n the 1050 Lawrence Co., Kentucky Census as follows:

329 JOHN CRABTREE 42 Lunbernan b. Va. Elizabeth " 40 b. Va. idelaide " 16 b. Ky, A< Sanuel " 12 Wi l l i a n " 0 Snith " 4

Of th i s f a n i l y : Adelaide narried Jacob Rice Sanuel narried Mary /inn Patton Snith narried Martha' White

This JOHN CRABTREE i s nentioned i n Willian Ely's, "Big Sandv Valley".

<

Page 61: The Crabtree family of Wayne County, West Virginiawvancestry.com/ReferenceMaterial/Files/The_Crabtree_Family_of... · "THE CRABTREE FAMILY OF WAYNE COUNTY, W.VA." INTRODUCTION CHAPTER

The following information i s speculation based on various b i t s of information that soon to form a pattern, but of course ny conclusions may or may not be correct. I believe that the John Crabtree who l i v e d near Louisa i n thc 1050's and 1060's was indeed the son of Solonon Crabtree, although the above infomation i s far from conclusive. He was a lunbernan around the Louisa area, and owned land-on Two - n i l c Creek. It i s known that a John Crabtree l i v e d on the head of Cats Fork i n the 1070's. I speculate that John Crabtree's fanily noved farther up Cats Fork as the land close to tho river was timbered o f f . Thc f a n i l y eventually noved across the ridge and onto the head waters of the L i t t l e Sandy River i n the Webbville area. Oscar Crabtree, age 06, told ne that his grandfather, John Crabtree, l i v e d i n this area after the C i v i l War. The L i t t l e Sandy empties into the Ohio River at Greenup, Ky. and for a family i n the timber -business, the r i v e r provides a roadway from Webbv i l l e to Greenup. In the 1070 Greonup County Census i s another Crabtree family. It is my guess that old John Crabtree of Louisa had at least two sons. One was tho John Crabtree, who lived near Webbville and was the grandfather of Oscar Crabtree. Members of t h i s f a n i l y also settled near Coal Grove. Ohio. (See "Other Lineages" at the end of tho book) Another son, Janes, narried Elizabeth McClung and li v e d near Greenup, Ky. according to the 1070 Census. Later, members of this family noved to Logan Co. W.Va to work i n the nines and to Huntington, W.Va. (See "Other Lineages" at the end of the book).

In order to correctly establish these Crabtree lineages and to discover i f they are related to thc Crabtree's of Wayne County, W.Va., much research needs to be done i n the records of Lawrence, Boyd, Carter, and Greenup Counties i n Eastern Kenkcky.

WESLEY CRABTREE, the youngest son of Solonon Crabtree, was horn i n 1012 i n Russell County, Va. In the early l&30's, he narried Nancy B a l l , the daughter of John and Polly B a l l i n Russell County. (There are several pages of naterial on this B a l l Fanily at the end of this paper.) Wesley Crabtree 1 s nane appears on the Russell County Census for 1830 and 1840. In the late 1040»s, he joined his father and brothers i n noving to Wayne County, Va. (now i t i s West V i r g i n i a ) . As their hone was located near the headwaters of the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River, i t i s not unreasonable to assume that the r i v e r valley was their roadway to the Ft. Gay area of Wayne County.

Wesley's nane appears on the Wayne County Census of 1050 and 1060. He had settled i n the botton land at the head of Joel's Branch, where he raised corn, cotton, tobacco, sheep, hogs, etc. Wesley and Nancy Crabtree were pious, religious people and raised their children accordingly. Although the f a n i l y l i v e d well for that day and ti n e , they never accumulated nuch noney as i s evidenced by the Estate Settlenent of Wesley Crabtree

According to Chauncy Crabtree, Wesley live d i n a log house i n the botton just below the Crabtree Cenetery on Joel's Branch. This botton had bad drainage and surface water would pollute the well. Both Wesley and his wife are said to have died fron typhoid fever. She died Decenber 12, 1063 and Wesley died May 20, 1065. They are buried i n the Crabtree Cenetery at the head of Joel's Branch,

On the following pages i s infornation concerning Wesley and Nancy Crabtree's children, Census infornation, a copy of Wesley's Estate Settlenent, and other infornation of interest.

G-rundee Co. Missouri September Oth, 1063 62

Dear Drother & Sister I take this privilege of writing a few lines to you.

We are i n common health at this tine which we thank God for a l l his blessings toward our happiness & that these few l i n e s nay cone (? swiftly) to your hand and find you a l l i n the enjoyment of good health. We would be glad to see you both and a l l the children, I can say to you, Wesley & Nancy, i f you are both l i v i n g , that we have had hard tines here. I t has been a tine of blood shed and carnage here, nen have been shot i n their (? very own) houses, Union nen have been way l a i d and shot by guerillas and bushwackers and murderers. The people's had to keep doors barred and locked of a night as i f they lived i n a savage nation. The Rebels at the start had the majority here but now the Union men have the majority here. I took my stand under the old f l a g , I am for the Union & Constitution that was guaranteed to us by our forefathers who sealed the covenant with their blood unto us and God forbid that we should go against i t , for we have enjoyed a l l the blessings and privilege that any nation could have wished f o r both of l i f e and property. I am a Lincolnite and we hope that you are a l l the same, union & constitution, that we may go hand & heart together to uphold the government and submit to anything President Lincoln may do to fetch t h i s unholy war to a close.

Well Nancy Catherine says to t e l l you that she has had 4 of the prettiest boys since she has been i n Missouri. They can't be beat by any of the connection. The oldest Lewis Hemar was born February 25th 1056, the second Josephee Randolph was born June 15th 1050, and died May 11th 1062, age 3 years-10 mon-& 27 days. The thi r d , Spencer Tunnell was born December 10th 1060, the 4th, John Neeley, was born November 29th 1062 and Cilba & Caroline i s both reading and a l i t t l e writing. The children sends th e i r best respects to you and children. Well, Wesley, i f you get these few l i n e s , I want you to write to me and l e t me know how you a l l are and how you are doing and how the tines are there, how the crops are there and the price of land. What i s land worth per acre & what are horses worth & cattle & hogs & sheep & grain & calico donestic and everything else. Land i s worth a l l nost nothing here, coffee 40 cents per pound, sugar 6 pounds to the dollar, bale thread 5 dollars a bunch, calico 25 to 3C cents per yard, donestic 30 to 60 cents a yard, a l l things else i n proportion, horses worth 100 to 150 dollars, sheep 2.50 to 5 D, work oxens fron 70 to 100 D, Milch cows 15 to 20 D, hogs low. . „

We had k i l l i n g frost here, i t came on the night of the 23 of August and i t was for 7 nights i n secession, corn i s badly b i t , tobacco a l l most ruined and a l l kinds of melons, pumpkins, buckwheat and we have had a very dry summer here.

THE BAIL FAMILY

The following material i s about the family of NANCY BALL (1810-1863) who married WESLEY CRABTREE (1812-1865).**

John B a l l , Senior (1670-1722)

Moses B a l l , Senior (1717-1792)

George B a l l , Sr. - BROTHER OF - Moses B a l l , J r . ( ? - 1839) (1748 - 1831)

John B a l l —MARRIED— Polly B a l l (1779-1863) (1788-1856)

Nancy B a l l Crabtree (1810-1863)

JOHN BALL, SENIOR was born about 1670. He live d i n Stafford County, Va. and died about 1722. He patented 221 across of land on the north branch of L i t t l e Hunting Creek. He also bought 343 acres from Robert Brent, executor of Nicholas Brent, on the north side of Hunting Creek. John B a l l removed to Hunting Creek soon after the purchase, and l e f t a w i l l proved i n the County Court of Stafford. This John B a l l was the father of Moses B a l l . (See Four rMile land Grants, by Stetson) A deed from John Minor to Thomas Shaw, recorded i n the Fairfax County records (Bk. G, p.I960) established proof of this relationship. I t was dated 1767, after John's death.

Moses B a l l deposed i n two suits over the Western Boundary l i n e of the Housing Patent concerning his parentage and family, i n records that have been preserved. In the suit of Alexander vs. Birch, he stated that he was a son of John B a l l , that he had l i v e d a l l his l i f e t i l l 1741 on Hunting Creek, "about a half mile above the ford". From then u n t i l 1755, he had l i v e d on the Potomac River, eight miles from the ford. Stetson stated that this place was known as GLENCARLYN PLATEAU.

**The f i r s t section i s about Moses B a l l , Sr. I t i n cludes passages fron Gen. George Washington's diary which mention Moses B a l l , Moses Ball's w i l l and other infornation.

According to "Genealogical Records" by Carrie White Avery, Moses B a l l was born May 2nd, 1717, narried June 27, 1745, to Ann Brasher and died Septenber 3rd, 1792. Fron the sane records we find that Ann B a l l was born September 26th, 1729. The date of her death i s unknown. According to family t r a d i t i o n , Moses B a l l was related to Mary B a l l , the mother of George Washington. Although this kinship i s implied, i t has not been proven. The following extracts fron the diary of George Washington lends support to this tradition.

109 'April 1785 - Friday, 22nd. Took an early "breakfast,

and accompanied Dr. Stewart and Lund Washington, and having sent for Mr. Moses B a l l , who attended, I went to a corner of the above land within about three poles of the Run (Four Mile Run) a wiite oak 18" i n diameter on thc side of a h i l l about 150 yards below the ruins ofan old m i l l and about 100 below a small branch which comes i n on the northeast side. After having run one course and part of another, my servant William, (one of the chair carriers) f e l l and broke the pan of his knee, which put a stop to my surveying and with much d i f f i c u l t y I was able to get him to Abingdon, being obliged to get a sledge to carry hin on, as he could neither walk, stand or ride. At Mr. Adam's m i l l ( m i l l of Robert Adams), I took Lund Washington's horse and came hone". (To Mount Vernon)

"May 1786, Tuesday, 16, I rode to the plantation' of Muddy Hole and Dogue Run. At Dogue Run the tinothy seed appealed to be coning to thick. Began to plant corn at th i s plantation yesterday i n the connon ncthod. When I returned hone found Moses B a l l and his son, John and W i l l i a n Carlin here; the f i r s t having his effects under execution, wanted to borrow nonoy to redeen then; lent hin ten pounds for this purpose."
