Well, the county fair has come and gone, and depending on how you look at it, you couldn’t wait to get there, or you may have

just wanted to leave town for the week. I hope you went and had a great time! There were rides which are appropriate for small children as well as those “Scary” things that turn you upside down and sideways fifty feet off the ground. Exhibits included cows, sheep, chickens, ducks and other “rare” species not normally seen by city dwellers. There were tractors, automobiles, remote control airplanes, fire trucks and other items of interest on display throughout the grounds. And don’t forget those Teddy Bears and prizes which were so “easy” to win! If you’re young, you probably went and enjoyed the heck out of it. If you’re old,

perhaps you went, too, even if just to walk around and rekindle some old memories.

The Kiwanis club has sponsored the local fair for as long as I can remember – I believe it started in 1948. “In 1971”, says Allyn Bell, “We made $5,000 which we gave to local Coweta County charities”. In 1988, when I was Kiwanis president, we were able to give away about $32,000, then an unheard of amount for a civic club to give. Between forty and fifty thousand people may have visited the fair this year, spending at least twenty dollars each. “That’s a million dollars!” Although a lot of this money leaves town with the carnival, Kiwanis has made upwards of $150,000 a year, most of which is put right back into the good works of our community. It all started with the Newnan Kiwan-is Club, however, there are several Kiwanis Clubs now in our community to share in the work and the giving. It takes a lot of volunteer help to serve that many folks!

But the young people, who are the ones really enjoying the fair, are not really thinking of the logistics of operation, or the money it gives to the community. They’re there just to have a great time with their friends and family. As I write this article, I can still remember as a child the smell of the cotton candy, the sounds of the rides, the lights and music, and the “screams of joy” coming from excited people on exhilarating rides. It was a big deal in those times and I looked forward to it every year. Later, I was able to enjoy it with my own children, who now take their children. I suppose the fun could go on for generations.

Although there are always some downsides to any event with that many people, our fair is a safe, well run event which provides a great deal of joy, as well as funding many of the charitable organizations here – at least $1,000,000.00 just in the past ten years. “Wow!” So, if you haven’t tried it, do so next year. If you have, you may just continue this tradition for years to come.

Joe

Post Script: My favorite ride used to be the “Bumper cars”, and still is. I think my wife must have enjoyed it, too, as it apparently taught her the driving skills she uses today!

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

In 2010 in the state of Georgia, 71,212 domestic violence crisis calls were answered. A safe-haven was provided for 7,544 victims and their children. 939,521 services were provided to victims and their children outside the safe-haven. There were 2,636 victims (in-cluding children) who were turned away from shelters because they were full. In 2010 there were 130 deaths in the state of Georgia due to domestic violence. In 43%

Purple is for Domestic Violence/October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

of the cases studied through Georgia’s Domestic Vio-lence Fatality Review Project, children were present during the domestic violence killing. These statistics are from the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.

The following information is from the National Domestic Violence Statistics. 1 in 4 American women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. Every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted

or beaten in the United States. Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup. 15.5 million children witnessed domestic vio-lence at least once in the past year. Women are more likely to be killed by their partner with a firearm than by all other means combined. Domestic violence vic-tims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year

in the United States. Men who as children witnessed their parents’ domestic violence were twice more likely to abuse their own wives than sons of non-violent parents.

From 2004 -2010 in Coweta County, there were 7 deaths due to do-mestic violence. In 2010, Community Welcome House provided safety in the safe-haven to 136 women and children. We received 703 calls for help. In our outreach pro-gram we assisted 571. As the Liaison for the Fam-ily Violence Intervention program we contacted 37 victims to explain our services if they need help. This year through Sep-tember 30th we have pro-vided safety for 73 women and children. We have re-ceived 524 calls for help. We have assisted 484 through our outreach ser-vices. As Liaison for the Family Violence Inter-vention Program we have contacted 27 victims.

Our purpose at Com-munity Welcome House is not to ask “why didn’t she leave?” but to say now you are here how can we help. Our mission is to bring the community to-gether to address work-ing together to save the families we see. The so-lution involves everyone. Community Welcome House provides the start-ing point for change.

Our hope is you will join with us during the month of October, and throughout the year in helping “Domestic Vio-lence End Here!”

Margo Merrifield is NCAA

Artist of Month for October 2011

Margo has been a member of Newnan Coweta Art Association since her move to Coweta County in 2006. Her love of art began in second grade with her mother’s figure drawing lessons, while at the same time, learning the palmer method of cur-sive writing. Margo’s first college major was art education, however life, and several more years of college major changes, took her in a different direction. Early retire-ment, coupled with a move to a county rich in abundant resources for budding art-ists, has brought art back into her life. In between golf, dog walking and bike riding, art has become Margo’s retirement hobby -- maybe even career. She has even com-bined hobbies, delaying her next golf shot while trying to catch that perfect photo of autumn colors or interesting cast of light on the green (probably to the dismay of her fellow golfers!).

Margo has received considerable encouragement and inspiration from classes and demonstrations available through the NEWCAA. The online art community also provides helpful tips and new techniques. Margo’s love of photography has added even more creative stimulus providing an unlimited source of landscapes, lighting nuances, and people for added creative inspiration.

In the past year, Margo has had success as an architectural portrait artist, ren-dering local historical buildings and homes in graphite, pen and ink and mixed me-dia. Personal homes have been very popular, and Margo has completed drawings based on photos provided by clients or taken by herself

Oil and pastel art mediums are a new direction for Margo, and she is enjoying this new challenge. Creations in all three mediums are on display this month in the Newnan Library.

Newnan Coweta Art Association meets the third Thursday of each month (from September to May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7:00pm. Visitors and guests are welcome. An art demonstration is presented each month.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital’s Surgical and Interventional Services

team is showing its support of breast cancer awareness in a unique way

by wearing pink gloves during the month of October. Partnering with

medical supply distributor, Medline, the team is focused on drawing

attention to the importance of early detection, encouraging all women

to perform monthly breast self-examinations and, for women 40 and

older, to get a mammogram every one to two years. The team hopes

that when patients and hospital employees see their pink gloves, they

will be reminded to get their mammogram, a promise their team has

made.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital’s October Mammogram Special

$75 screening mammograms throughout month of October

NEWNAN – The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center is of-NEWNAN – The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center is of-NEWNAN – The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center is offering screening mammograms for $75 throughout the month of Oc-tober. Located at 1755 Highway 34 East, Suite 1200, in Newnan, Ga., appointments with no waiting are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, October 9, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

October is breast cancer awareness month. In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. Eighty percent of women who are diagnosed do not have any reported risk factors, other than being female and aging. Common risk factors may include family history, race and ethnicity.

The keys to surviving breast cancer are regular screenings (breast self-exams and screening mammograms) and early diagnosis. Screening mammograms are covered by most health insurance plans and are

recommended for women over age 40.

No physician referral is required, however it is required that women being screened have a current physician to receive screening results. Patients should bring picture ID with them to the screening.

To schedule a mammogram, call 770-254-3668 and mention this spe-cial offer upon scheduling. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted prior to the exam. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with insur-ance coverage.

For more information on Piedmont Outpatient Center, visit pied-montnewnan.org.

During a trial in which Mae West was accused of indecency on stage

Judge: “Miss West, are you trying to show contempt for this court?”

Mae West: “On the contrary, your honor, I was doin’ my best to conceal it.”

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Voir Dire comes from the French and means “to speak the truth”. This is better known as jury selection. The Norman Conquest of 1066 introduced into English common law some por-tions of the French vocabulary, including voir dire. Voir Dire examination is best defined as an opportunity for counsel to examine prospective jurors to see and hear their responses to ques-tions designed to discover a basis for challenges by the attorneys.

The purpose of voir dire is the ascertainment of impartiality of prospec-tive jurors and their capacity to treat the case on its merits. Attorneys for both plaintiffs and defense seek jurors with objectivity and freedom from bias or prior inclination. In Georgia courts both parties are provided the opportunity to determine the availability of the prospective juror to de-cide the case.

In order to proceed with trial, jurors are summoned to the courthouse. They are then brought into the individual courtroom in panels. Usually between twenty-four (24) and forty (40) jurors. From this panel the attor-neys proceed with their jury selection process. Both the plaintiff and de-fense attorneys have the opportunity to question perspective jurors about their background and potential biases before being chosen to sit on a jury. Each attorney can exercise a limited number of challenges for cause if that person says or otherwise expresses a bias against the attorney’s case. These challenges for cause are limited to a set amount for both criminal and civil trials. The judge would make the determination as to whether the juror was indeed biased.

In Georgia, attorneys have the right to ask questions seeking informa-tion about a juror’s knowledge touching any matter or thing which would disclose any interest of the juror in the case. This includes any opinion as to what party ought to prevail, relationships or acquaintances of the juror with the parties or attorneys; any fact or circumstance indicating any leaning or bias which the juror might have in respect to the subject matter of the case, the attorneys or the parties; and religious, social or fraternal connections of the juror.

Each attorney’s goal in selecting the juror is to get a fair and impartial jury who is willing to follow their oath and reach a verdict that speaks the truth.

Target Market ... What Does That Mean

In Real Estate? As business owners, we are constantly hearing about target mar-kets and how to direct our advertising towards attracting buy-ers for our goods or services. Information from survey results are compiled, reviewed and those results are then passed on to us. It’s about appealing to the buyer of our products.

Knowing who our “target market” while trying to sell a house is just as important to the home seller as it is to all these businesses that have products or services to sell.

As a home seller, this means that you are going to have to think about who your buyer will be when marketing your house. What age group are they? Are they empty nesters, new parents or fami-lies with teenagers? What will they expect to see when they come to view the property and will it be something that they desire?

Let’s say your house is 15 years old. The kitchen appliances, cabi-nets, countertops and lighting is dated compared to what a buyer will see in an newer house. Your bathroom is 15 years old. The flooring, vanity and fixtures are dated compared to the competi-tion.

Could your furniture be showing some wear and tear and look dated? Probably, but your thinking “A buyer is going to be pur-chasing our house, not our furniture. Why should that matter?”

It matters because, the “Target Market” for your property is probably around 30 to 40 years old, has a family that needs room to roam and if they see a house and the furniture looks like their parents or grandparents furniture, they can’t get excited about making this their new home. They need to see that their young, hip style of life will work in a 15 year old house. I call this the “Pot-tery Barn” generation. This is a style of decorating that a 30ish age buyer likes and can relate to and they can’t relate to a house that looks like their parents house.

Studies show 90% of buyers cannot visualize the potential of a space with the current home owners’ taste and belongings. It shouldn’t matter, but it does. However, if they visit a house that is 15 years old that has been updated through the years and has current style furnishings and accessories, they will get excited about it and most likely, this will be the house that they choose to purchase. This house was marketed with the “target market” (buyer) in mind.

ChrysanthemumsThe chrysanthemum is a native of China, having been in cultiva-

tion there for over two thousand years. It was then exported to Ja-pan where it became a symbol of royalty. In the seventeenth century it was introduced into Europe. Other varieties were brought to England from Japan in the 1700’s. Then, in 1753, Swedish botanist Carl Lin-naeus created the name Chrysanthemum. A composite Greek word from chrysos (golden) and anthemon (flower) was given to a small yel-low species known as Chrysanthemum indicum. French growers were largely responsible for early development of the small multi-flowered bush type varieties. Many special and unusual varieties were developed in Japan. Holland, Korea and America each created many new types and colors. The chrysanthemum first began to be used and developed in the United States in the 1800’s. Today there are countless modern varieties available. These perennials return year after year.

Modern plants are from the species C h r y s a n t h e m u m morifolium. Varieties may be either bush-type, single bloom type, or some may be grown either way. In late Summer the plant turns its energy from plant growth to setting blooms. The

shorter day length of Autumn is the trigger for blooms to open. Bloom-ing times can occur from late Summer into November depending on the variety, location, temperatures, and amount of pinching.

Cultural requirements are a fairly neutral soil pH, well-drained soil, and full sun most of the day. Chrysanthemums don’t like constantly wet soil in Summer or Winter. Use good amended garden soil and don’t plant too deep. Fertilize Spring, Summer and Fall with 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 (not too much). Pinch out tips of branches late Spring through July to make bushier plants and delay blooming time (slightly). Water regularly as needed, but do not keep too wet.
