Well, it’s that time of year, once again. Time for the start of a new school year for students and teachers alike, as well as administra-
tive and support staff. And let us not forget the bus drivers; those men and women who merrily drive down the lane, humming along to the tune of “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, being sung, in harmony, by a vehicle full of those well-mannered little darlings. And the teachers can’t wait to get the day started with an orderly group recital of the “Pledge of Allegiance” and role call. The really polite students may even put an apple on the teacher’s desk. It’s no wonder teaching is such a gratifying profession.
I can well remember my first day of school in the first grade. Having completed my undergraduate studies at “Miss Mae’s” kindergarten on LaGrange Street, I enrolled in the Maggie Brown primary school located on Clark Street in Newnan. Constructed in 1935, it was named for Miss
Maggie Brown who taught in Newnan for about 50 years. Miss Jewel Gentry, as I remember, was the school’s principal and seemed to be, at that time, the oldest women I had ever seen. There were six class rooms with wood floors and big ceiling fans. Each had one or two blackboards and built-in bookshelves, with louvered doors, behind the teacher’s desk. There were no food facilities as most of us lived close enough to walk home for lunch, but some brought a sandwich in a “Howdy Doody” or “Snow White” metal lunch box. The school’s wonderful playground had slides and swings, and see-saws – a place which would now be deemed unsafe and certainly not insurable.
Learning from a“Dick and Jane”1st Pre-Primer
My teacher, “Miss Polly” Crowley was a young, attractive woman who had the patience and understanding to get us off on the right foot to a lifetime of learning. In those days, students could neither read nor write at the beginning of the first grade (or was it just me?), but she quick-ly taught us to put letters together to form basic words. I don’t think we got into history, physics or geography, but we did learn some “arithme-tic” by reading about Dick, Jane and Sally and the trading of some apples. Jim Hardin, who had just gotten into the radio business, came by one day to make a taped sound recording of
each student and what he or she had learned. It would be broadcast on the local radio station the follow-ing day and we told everyone we knew to listen. You would have thought we were getting ready to hear the President’s State of the Union address to the nation. It was a big, big deal! By the way, Jim Hardin and I later became good friends.
I had the opportunity, eight or ten years ago, to attend Grandparents Day with my granddaughter, Bailey, at The Maggie Brown School. While the children were outside playing, I went into “my” room –“Miss Polly’s” room. I was alone in the room, sitting in one of the little chairs. Almost everything looked the same as it did in 1954. The wood plank floors were there as well as the little bookcase with doors behind the teacher’s desk. Even the smells of that old building brought back pleasant memories. We rarely get to revisit the past like I did that day, and even writing about that visit, back in time, is somewhat of an emo-tional experience. And it feels good.
Coweta County has a great school system with dedicated teachers doing a good job. The administrative staff seems to be using good judgment as to what our communities’ needs will be for the future. Our school system, past and present, has worked hard to give our young citizens a good start to a life of learning. And I believe an attitude of learning begins at home and is then brought forward, in a structured way, by our schools. I also think that one never graduates from learning and just being able to “do your own thinking” in an organized way will get you a far piece down the road of life. Too bad I didn’t understand that earlier.
JoePostscript: So, what ever happened to Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot? I’m sure Spot is no longer with us and the girls are great grandparents with blue hair. Perhaps Dick, who is now a “celebrity has been”, is driving around in a Lincoln Town Car with his blinker light on and wearing sunglasses half the size of his face. He’s just like me!

The basic categories of classifications are: Bird’s Foot (ex. ‘Needlepoint’), Fan (ex. ‘Triton’), Curlies (ex. ‘Ivalace’), Variegated selections (ex. ‘Goldheart’, ‘Gla-cier’, ‘Dentata variegata’), Heart-shaped (ex. ‘Deltodia’ - also known as Sweet-heart), Miniature (ex. ‘Midget’), Common Ivy (ex. ‘Hibernica’), and Odd Types (ex. ‘Erecta’).
Since ancient times ivies have been used in celebrations, folklore, paintings, and gardening. It was said to symbolize fidelity and immortality. Ivy has long been much used in weddings and holds up very well in flower arrangements. It has many uses in gardens as: vertical interest, trailing hedge, ground cover, topiaries, hanging baskets, and trailing from pots and window boxes.
Growth requirements for ivy generally are moist, well-drained soil, high hu-midity, soil with a pH of 6 to 7, a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. While ivy prefers shade or part shade, it can grow in sun. Once well established it can tolerate drought and pollution.
Ivy provides food, cover, and nesting for birds, butterflies, and insects. It is not poisonous to animals in any of its parts. Only the seeds are slightly toxic to humans, but some few may have a slight allergic skin reaction to ivy. It is not a parasite. Ivy is an evergreen, woody, climbing plant. Ivy should not be grown up trees. It won’t harm the tree but could make it top heavy in high winds or block light to limbs. It is better grown on a trellis than a wall.
Do not confuse plants including the word ivy in their common names with true ivy. Some of these are:
Boston Ivy - Parthenocissus tricuspidata - deciduous• Swedish Ivy - Plectranthus oertendahlii - house plant• Grape Ivy - Cissus - tender, trailing house plant• Devil’s Ivy - Scindapsus aureus - Pothos• Poison Ivy - Rhus radicans - deciduous climber (may cause severe allergic reactions - all parts)•
Problems with ivies are usually few when grown outside. Inside plants suffer from lack of humidity. Give them a shower and let drain. Insecticidal soap can help with bad infestations of red spiders, mites, aphids. Leaf spot sometimes occurs.
Tree ivy is a mature adult ivy that has ceased climbing and taken on a shrub form. It will then flower every year and set seeds. This type of ivy is called arborescent.

Simple Updates That You Can Take With You
As home sellers trying to sell, one of the biggest concerns is to receive a large return on any investment made to the property. Making updates and upgrades to the property is usually a smart idea, such as upgrading counter tops, hardware and fixtures, because these updates will remain with the house once sold and the buyer will be able to move right in and start enjoying their home right away.
These improvements increase the value of the property instantly, but what about other updates that the home seller can take with them to their new home? Below are a few suggestions:
Welcome Mat & Entry Way Rug - First impression before crossing the threshold ... is your mat worn out and dirty? How about your entryway rug? Welcome mats and entry rugs are not huge investments and will make a tremendous difference in the first impression to a buyer.
Bedding - Changing the bedding in the master bedrooms is a fast and easy up-date to make. Bed linens tend to hold odors and make a bedroom “feel” dingy. Choose linens that are light & airy, that will have a fresh feeling. They don’t have to be expensive, custom made linens; however, do take the time to press any new bedding that comes “out of the bag”.
Artwork - If your artwork is “all about you and your family” (family photos & portraits) investing in a few large pieces of wall art is a wise investment. Choic-es can be mirrors, ironwork or framed prints and they don’t have to be ex-pensive. Some of the hottest trends today in wall art are Typography prints and are easy to duplicate for a Do It Yourself home seller.
Bath Towels - Remember the “company towels” that your mother or grandmother never let you use? “Don’t use the towels in the powder room kids, those are for company!”. It’s time to bring them back ... no buyer wants to see your daily shower towel or face cloth. Eeeew! Purchase some extra fluffy towels for the towel bars in your powder and bathrooms and hide the daily towels in the washing machine or be-hind the closet door on a hook.
Clothes Hamper - Again, no one wants to see a sellers dirty clothes either! Re-place open plastic/wicker laundry baskets with a lidded hamper. Preferable an attractive wicker or bamboo one to give a natural spa feeling to the area.
House Plants - We all have plants that struggle, get leggy, have dead leaves or outgrow their surroundings. This is a perfect time to send them to plant heaven and invest in new healthy plants to replace them. Hopefully they will stay alive until you get to your new home!

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our pa-tients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.
Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have ques-tions about our program or if you would like to at-tend volunteer training.

Cargill Donates $35,000 To Piedmont Newnan
Newnan, Ga. – Cargill, an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services, has donated $35,000 to Piedmont Newnan. The donation will be used to provide screen-ings, diagnostic breast imaging and biopsies free-of-charge to Coweta Coun-ty women who otherwise would not be able to afford these potentially life-saving procedures.
“This generous gift from Cargill will provide so many women with early intervention options and, as a result, better outcomes,” said Vicki Kaiser, senior director of outpatient services at Piedmont Newnan. “We are grateful for their donation and thank them in advance for the lives they will save.”
Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in the course of her lifetime. The National Cancer Institute reports that screen-ing mammography every one to two years reduces breast cancer deaths by a third or more for women 50 and older. When breast cancer is detected early, survival rates are above 90%, but decline as the cancer progresses.

Volunteers for Affinis Hospice
All you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you pro-vide companionship and a brief respite for caregiv-ers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the pa-tient, just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the care-giver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and support-ed. Please call Lynn Yea-ger 404-832-4232 with interest or questions.
