The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.
The other day I saw an ad in the newspaper by one of the banks located in our community. It was touting the merits of “mo-
bile banking”. Via text, web, or phone app, you can check your balance, pay your bills or transfer money – anywhere, anytime! This must be a wonderful thing for busy people on the go. If I had the dexterity to text, or owned a device which had some sort of app(lication?), I may want to go that route, too. It does, however, seem somewhat impersonal, as I would probably be known at the bank as #E64611JW.
The computer may even decide to “get personal” with me and add “Mr.” in front of those numbers.
One of the pleasures of doing busi-ness in Coweta County is being welcomed into a frequently visited establishment where the employ-ees know me by name. At the bank, for instance, I like to say “hello” to the friendly people working there. We know each other from many years of business relationship and they feel almost like family to me. Scott Wilson, Founder of Bank of Coweta, used to star in his own TV commercials saying something like, “Courtesy, good manners and friendly service have not gone out of style at our bank”. His positive and encouraging personal-ity must have rubbed off on his employees because, after about 40 years or so, the attitude there remains the same. And it’s not just BOC. Most well run companies know the value of personal relationships; whether a bank, restaurant, dry cleaners, auto mechanic or retail store. Friendly service creates value and gets (and keeps) customers.
So, inasmuch as I understand the value of modern technology in service companies, I think I’ll keep on going, in person, with my little deposits and payments, saying “how are you?” to the familiar faces I know. It also gives me a chance to leave the latest copy of The Coweta Shopper and maybe catch up on some of the news around town.
Until next time, I am,
(Mr.) E64611JW
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

and friendly service have not
gone out of style… ”

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger
The term premises liability is a broad one and in Georgia encompasses a number of dif-ferent types of cases. These cases fall into the categories of slip & fall, trip & fall, negligent security, and nuisance causes. Today’s article is reviewing the areas of slip & fall and trip & fall. It should first be noted that just because you fell on somebody’s property in Georgia, it does not mean that it was legally their fault. For example, Georgia has the open and obvious doctrine which means that if you tripped over a large pallet that was easily visible, chances are the property owner would not be at fault.
The second issue to consider is the legal status of the injured person. A trespasser onto somebody’s property would have comparatively few rights when injured on that property. A landowner owes the trespasser only the duty not to willfully or wantonly injure them. One of the key exceptions to that rule pertains to children in what is known as the attractive nuisance doctrine. An example would be a neighborhood swimming pool where it could be foreseen that kids like to swim and that they might trespass.
The next category of persons on a property would be that of a licensee. The owner of the property is subject to liability to a licensee for injuries caused by a condition on the property if the owner knows or has reason to know the condition, should realize that it involves unreasonable risk of harm, and should expect that the licensee will not realize the danger. The property owner should exercise reasonable care to make the condition safe and warn the licensee of the condition and risk involved where the licensee does not know or would have not reason to know of the risk.
The most protected category of person is that of the invitee. The prop-erty owner owes the invitee the duty of ordinary care in keeping the prem-ises and area of approach safe. The invitees would include shoppers, peo-ple doing work on the property at the owner’s invitation, and anyone else there for the mutual benefit of the owner and the guest.

Replacing and UpdatingI know my carpet, countertops and fixtures are dated and need replacing, but I’ll just give the buyer credit for that. Anyway, how do I know that I will be making the right replacement choices for the next owner?”
Back in the good ole days, when real estate was selling like hot cakes, all that was required to attract a buyer was to have a clean and neat house. To say that real estate has changed over the last 4 years is an understate-ment. Now, we’re all talking about “staging” and updating our houses in order to get them sold. As a seller, it’s difficult to wrap ones head around the fact that you may have to spend some money in order to sell your property. You’re seeing dollars signs being subtracted from your bottom line.
If you are thinking this … what do you think a buyer is thinking? If they see that light fixtures, carpet, etc. need to be replaced, all they see are dollar signs rolling around in their head.
By the time a buyer has paid the down payment, closing cost and moving expenses, there usually isn’t any money left to spend on updating a prop-erty. “However, the house down the street has a similar plan and it’s already been updated … let buy that one! We can move right in”!
The days of “I’ll just give them credit for the updates” are over. If you CAN find a buyer that is willing to make the changes, they are usually looking for a “good deal” and will make a low ball offer to compensate for the expenses of updating. The offer will be much lower than it would have cost you to make the changes yourself. You lose!
As for making the correct replacement choices … talk to your agent or have a staging consultation to get the advice needed to make the right choice. A home staging consultation is usually around $150 - $275. Why risk having your house sit on the market while other updated houses around you are selling?
For more information on updating your property, contact
Nan Johnston, Southern. Staging & Redesign,
nan@ southern-staging.com

• To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the dry-wall. You also can wad up a piece of alumi-num foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the com-pound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up
instead of fall down.
• “I recently did a little work on my car, and afterward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage.” -- A Reader, via email
• Add a fabric-softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. You also can use a cotton ball scented with your favorite essential oil or even perfume.
• If you have trouble threading needles, try spritzing some hairspray on your finger, and twist the end of the thread. It will keep the fibers together and stiffen it enough to be easily threaded.
• It’s still possible to save a bit of money on car maintenance if you can’t change your own oil. Learn common add-ons that you will be offered at oil-and-lube places. Air filters are surprisingly easy to replace on your own, and so are windshield wipers. Very often, the staff of auto-supply chains will lend you tools or even assist you right in the parking lot.
• Got bug bites? Try these for some relief from the itching of insect bites: apple-cider vinegar; a paste of baking soda and water, allowed to dry on the bite; a similar paste of meat tenderizer and water; or antiperspirant.

What’s In Your Garage?Meet Gene Chester
In 1963, Gene Chester left the family farm in Statesboro and came rolling into Newnan driving a brand new Chevrolet Corvair. And not just any corvair, but a Super-charged, “Spyder” convertible! He had applied to Sears, and a posi-tion was available in Newnan and LaGrange. Gene chose the Newnan store, which was located at the Greenville Street Shopping Center. (The only shopping center!)
The Corvair was produced by General Motors from 1960-69 and was Detroit’s answer to the Volkswagen Beetle. Its unique feature was a rear mounted, air cooled engine - unheard of in Ameri-can-made automobiles at that time. It was also light and small compared to the behemoth, big finned “land yachts” of the 60’s. Gene’s Corvair has an auto-matic transmision with a little lever on the dash labeled “forward - neutral- re-verse”.
About 25 years ago, he purchased this beautiful 1966 Corvair convertible from Coweta Shopper publisher, Joe Williams. Gene has re-stored the car over the years and it looks as though it could be sitting on the “Showroom Floor”! He also owns another red 1966 Corvair. The other car in the photo is a 1966 VW convertible which is in excellent condition. Genes wife, Pat, was quick to say, “This Volkswagen is my car!”
Gene doesn’t have as much time for old cars now, as his interests have again turned to cattle farming. He has been a long time mem-ber of the Newnan Ki-wanis Club and is a member of The First Baptist Church. Gene and Pat, who live on Corinth Rd., have four children and 10 grand-children.
Car Colors: Personal, Regional, Fashionable
(NAPSI)—The car color you choose may say a lot about you. In fact, according to a recent survey, it may indi-cate where you live.
For example, a classic choice could identify you as an American living on the East or West Coast. Despite an array of bright, vibrant car colors, U.S. customers on the coasts and customers in most European countries prefer the classic core colors—white, black, silver and gray.
Gray and silver are most popular in New York and Los Angeles. San Franciscans like white and Bostonians like black.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the U.S., customers have different preferences. Red is popular in the Midwest. Drivers in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Pitts-burgh like green. And Phoenix and Miami customers like warm colors—orange and gold.
Across the ocean, tastes tend to be equally as diverse: French and Italian motorists like cream-colored vehi-cles, not a surprise given their café cultures. The Irish like silver. Customers in Denmark prefer black, while those in Belgium like gray.
Only one country in Europe has a top color other than
white, black or silver: The Czech Republic chooses blue.
“The trend continues to be toward core colors—the classics,” said Susan Swek, Ford’s group chief designer for color and materials. “We strive to achieve the best black, silver, white and gray. We’re always working to make them even more appealing.”
Vehicle owners everywhere use color choice to convey messages about themselves, but color choices are also
influenced by culture and fashion trends.
These findings are from Ford’s annual look at U.S. car-buying preferences as well as an international color study by DuPont.
Research also shows that white is the new red; dark grays, blacks and blues are also popular, mirroring fashion trends. Also, new paint technologies, such as tri-coat pearl technology and tinted clear coats, keep colors fresh by adding a modern twist to classic hues.

HerbsSince earliest times herbs have been gathered from the wild and (later)
cultivated for use as food, medicine, cosmetics, dyes, insect repellents, and natural air fresheners and perfumes. Today herbs are widely used in cooking; for ornamental value; and enjoyed in wreaths, topiaries, and dried flower ar-rangements.
Herbs may be annuals (one growing season), biennials (two seasons), or perennials (more than two years growth). While some are best planted in Spring, many herbs may be planted or divided in the Fall. Garlic bulbs and shallots are planted in the Fall. Chives and tarragon may be divided in the Fall.
Autumn is the perfect time to prepare soil for herb gardening. Most herbs don’t need too rich a soil or much fertilizer. They do like a neutral to slightly alkaline soil with excellent drainage. Compost, lime, wood ashes, crushed egg shells or blood meal or 5-10-5 fertilizer could be added to good garden soil and tilled in thoroughly. Water and wait to plant. Choose a sunny location with good air circulation. Protect plants from strong winds.
There are many ways to plant herbs. Raised beds are great! Many types of containers can be used including pots, boxes, troughs, wall planters, win-dow boxes and “strawberry” jars. Drainage is most important. Topiary forms are fun. In Winter plants can be grown outdoors under cloches or in a cold frame. In the house they can be grown on a window sill in a sunny Southern windowed room that is cooler. A greenhouse is, of course, the ultimate luxury for Winter.
Herbs can be propogated by sowing seeds (indoors or outside), transplant-ing, rooting cuttings, layering or mounding. Many herbs can be di-vided either in the Spring or in the Fall. Try to give them as close to their natural growing environment as possible.
Be aware that some herbs can be very invasive ~ such as catmint, all other mints, lemon balm, tarragon, and sweet woodruff. Separate them! Some herbs that are more tolerant of moister retentive heavy clay soils are garlic, all mints, chives, tarra-gon, fennel, sage, lemon balm, and cat mint.

Most successful businesses have one or two key employees who make doing business with them a special pleasure. Personal Banker, Rachel Hood enjoys that reputation at The Bank of Coweta’s main branch in Newnan. Her job is to welcome new customers with help in opening accounts, and assist and help solve problems for both new and existing bank customers.
“I enjoy meeting new people and helping my regular customers on a daily basis”, says Rachel. She has been with Bank of Coweta for 18 years, but has about 40 years experience in banking.
Rachel is married to Joey Hood, who works as an electrician for the county school system. She has two stepsons, four grandchildren and a great nephew. “They are the joy of my life”. They are members of the East Newnan Baptist Church where Rachel has attended since childhood. Her hobbies include cooking, gardening, and making baby quilts. Joey and she are also big NASCAR fans!
Publishers note: I have depended on Rachel Hood for many years for my banking needs. She is always willing and able to help me transfer funds, open or close an account or “just tell me if I have any money left to transfer”! When my granddaughter, Anna, needs her money transferred for college tuition, we say, “We’ll have to talk with Rachel about that”. She is truly a pleasure to work
with, as are the other friendly employees at the Bank of Coweta.

A Little Personal
Space, Please
Dear Paw’s Corner: I read a recent column
of yours where an owner said her cat tended to scratch and nip at her without warning. You said that the cat might have some socialization prob-lems due to being a shelter pet, or might be expe-riencing some stress. Could I add that cats that are perfectly “normal” and loving also will scratch or nip if they are surprised or feel otherwise threat-ened. It’s natural. -- Cat Fan in Chicago
Dear Cat Fan: You’re right; many cats will turn and scratch or nip when surprised. Others will bat or scratch at strangers or even family members who reach out to them. Why? Well, like humans, cats have varying levels of “personal space,” so to speak. And because they’re fiercely independent, many have specific likes and dislikes -- opinions that can vary from family member to family member.
It’s important to approach a cat, or any animal, with respect. Never sneak up behind or grab at a cat, and don’t yell or make loud noises. Approach from an angle where it can see you clearly, and speak in a calm, reassuring voice. Hold out your hand for inspection, and let the cat come to you.
It’s possible to figure out the most important signals just from this move. If it sniffs at your hand, rubs its whiskers against it and backs away, the cat’s not interested in being picked up or petted at the moment. If it approaches you after rubbing its whiskers against your hand, you’re welcome to pet it. If it allows you to gently pick it up and doesn’t struggle, great. If it jumps into your lap, you belong to it (just kidding -- sort of!).
Send your question or comment to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

H.E.L.P. SPAY NEUTER CLINIC IN NEWNAN, GATO HOLD “No Labor Day” SPECIAL
Local Citizens Urged to Spay or Neuter Pets
Newnan, GA August 26, 2011 – The Newnan Coweta Humane Society affiliate, H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic will hold a “NO Labor Day” event. LouAnn Jones, Executive Director, encourages pet owners to bring their cat or dog in for spay or neuter because while Labor Day is a time for our end of summer picnics, unintentional litters of puppies and kittens are certainly no picnic!. During this event, conducted between September 1 and 30, 2011, all surgery packages include FREE vaccines for dogs and cats (DHPP & Rabies for dogs, FVRCP & Rabies for cats) This represents a $20 value to clients taking advantage of this great offer. As always, there is no extra charge for in heat or pregnant cats or dogs.. “Spay/neuter saves pets’ lives while lessening the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers,” said Jones.
H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic has hosted similar campaigns since the clinic’s Grand Opening in October 2010. Since their opening, the clinic has spayed or neutered almost 4,000 cats and dogs. The H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, a 501(c)(3) organization, holds as their mission to provide a non-lethal solu-tion to the companion animal over-population. They offer a unique blend of quality surgical services at a stationary clinic, combined with an active transport program where they travel to a central point in outlying counties and bring animals with appointments to the clinic. The H.E.L.P. Spay Neu-ter Clinic operates as an outreach affiliate of the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society. For more information, please visit www.NCHSrescue.org or www.helpspayneuter.org

Peachtree City-area residents are in for a rare treat when the International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers (IGSDB) host an event here, from August 29th - September 3rd, at the Hilton Garden Inn. The company has identified this region as prime territory for purchasing your precious metals—especially gold and silver. The IGSDB estimates that local residents have millions of dollars worth of valuables that they no longer need or want. That is where the IGSDB comes in—they specialize in buying those items from local sellers in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
Items like gold coins, scrap gold, sterling silver and tea sets also diamond rings are in high demand right now, and IGSDB is purchasing massive quantities of them on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries.
Currently on an international tour, IGSDB has included Peachtree City on its list of stops for this week. Residents are urged to mark their calendar for this special opportunity to meet one-on-one with gold, silver and diamond specialists.
Because of IGSDB’s low overhead, extensive resources and massive volume, the company is often able to pay out more than other dealers and retailers. Many customers are surprised at how much they are offered for seemingly small amounts. “I had two bent herringbone necklaces, a class ring, and some outdated earrings that I brought to a show. I walked out with $425 in less than 15 minutes,” said a satisfied guest.
Providing an economic boost to each region it visits, the IGSDB projects to pay out $350,000 at each event—a testament to the high volume of items they purchase and the prime prices being paid. Offers are made based on rarity, numismatic value, condition and market value.
Company spokesman Matthew Enright says, “We just paid $4,700 for a loose 1.25—carat diamond. Our mission is to pay local residents on the spot for sterling silverware, fine jewelry, coins and precious metals—especially silver and gold.” The company has seen a huge influx of gold lately. “Customers have been scrambling to cash into the record-high value of gold,” adds Enright. For those who are unsure if their items are genuine gold or silver, or simply costume, company will test it for free. “The best strategy is to bring all items to the show for a free evaluation from our specialists. It always amazes me how a small handful of gold and silver can turn into hundreds of dollars in just a few moments. We test, weigh, and buy items right on the spot,” Enright says.
At a recent show, a small—town dentist had a nice pay day. “I have been collecting dental gold for years from patients who didn’t want their extracted teeth. It really added up—my check is for over $31,000!” While most people
don’t have buckets of dental gold at their fingertips, they do have $750 worth of scrap gold scattered throughout their homes or mismatched earrings.
In addition to scrap gold, fine jewelry and diamonds, coins are a big hit. Offers will be made on all coins dated 1970 and earlier—gold coins, silver, silver dollars, half dollars, quarters, nickels and dimes. Enright explains, “U.S. coins made before 1965 are worth more than their legal tender amount because they contain 90% silver. Rare dates and mint marks can make them even more valuable. We recently paid $78,000 for an amazing coin collection. One couple brought in a rusty coffee can filled with silver coins, sawdust, and a dead spider. The can had been in the basement for years. We were happy to send them home with a check for more than $700!”
Peachtree City-area residents should start collecting their valuables now to bring to the free event, which runs Monday - Saturday. Deals will be made and money will be paid on the spot. Attendance is expected to be high, but no appointment is needed. Enright encourages everyone to take advantage of this special opportunity to meet directly with specialists from the International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers. He concludes, “It’s a great chance for people to cash in their old diamonds, jewelry, coins and scrap gold. This is a seller’s market, so don’t miss out!”
