Well, it’s that time of year again. Time to set new goals and
priorities, make more money, lose weight, spend more
time with the family, or maybe even part your hair on the other
side. Some will, perhaps, decide to quit smoking, eat better and
exercise more often. (Just look at how many stores were adver-
tising exercise equipment right after Christmas!) We call these
statements “New Year’s Resolutions”. We decide to do this or that
- those accomplishments and improvements we couldn’t seem to
get done last year which will now magically happen just because
the calendar has turned its page. Really?
As for me, I have resolved “not to resolve” to do all those things that I probably won’t
get done this year. That way, come December, I will not have the disappointment of
that ignominious culmination of failure yet again. But I haven’t given up completely.
I recently came across a group of statements from a chap by the name of Christian D.
Larson. His “quotes for improvement” may not seem to have any tangible goals, but
the accomplishment of any one of them could change our lives. Let’s look at them.
* Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
* To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
* To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
* To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
* To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.
* To be enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
* To forget the mistakes of the past and
press on to greater achievements of the future.
* To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.
* To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
* To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, to strong for fear and
too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
I would like to try (but not resolve!) to at least move my life in the direction of the
above ideals. These are quality statements and there are no pre-qualifications for be-
ing a member of this “equal opportunity” group. Every person, whether struggling,
or on top the world, can benefit and be encouraged by this noble mentality. Making
more money, having better health, starting a new hobby and learning new things can
certainly be a big part of improving our quality of life. Maybe you and I can reach
our goals and resolutions more easily if we build them on the firm foundation of the
things that truly make a difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Let’s go for it!
JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Selling Your Home - It’s A Process
Once a decision is made to sell your home, there’s a process involved. You make the decision, you start a list of tasks to complete, actual work begins to take place, emotions may arise and the roller coaster ride begins.
Decisions are made about where to move, what agent to use, how to price the property, etc. The decision to move may be due to a much anticipat-ed opportunity such as job transfer, expecting a baby and needing more room, or a promotion at work allowing you to purchase a dream home. Or it could be for a more unhappy event such as job loss, divorce, or death in the family. Empty nesters could qualify for happy or unhappy emotions. Either way, emotions are going to run amuck!
If you are a “list maker” you’ll want to organize your thoughts, put your tasks to complete on paper and develop a time line about what’s involved with the move. Whether you use pen and paper or digital sources such as computer or smart phone, this is a large part of the process. The is when “disassociation” from your home where you’ve built memories begins to happen. If you see it in black & white, you may start to believe that this is really going to happen. It’s part of the process!
Get ready, this next stage is where the tasks start. This is the stage where everyone in the household needs to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Pre-packing, un-cluttering spaces, making repairs and cleaning like you’ve never cleaned before, must take place. Once all of this is complete, you then have the arduous task of maintaining this state until the house sells. Ugh! It’s not easy, but if you want to sell the house, it’s a necessary part of the … process!
Emotions - this is the part of the process that will show up through-out all of the above stages. Emotions run high while deciding on a price to list, jump back on edge when you get a call to “show” the house. “Everyone pick - up! They’re showing the house today!” Then you worry all day about what the buyer thought about your house. You call your Realtor only to find out that they haven’t heard from the showing agent for feed- back. One of two things can happen at this point, either you will become excited due to an

offer or disappointed from a low offer.
If you manage to work out a signed sales contract, you start the real packing and make moving arrangements, all the while keeping your fin-gers crossed about the appraisal, the buyers home inspection or that the buyers loan will go through without any complications. At the closing, a feeling of relief may be experienced or disappointment due the final sales price and proceeds to the seller.
Final part - taking that last look around the property once the last box is loaded into the moving truck to be sure you’ve left nothing behind and seeing the “ghosts” of past events that took place during your time spent in this home. I’ve done this a time or two in my life and I prom-ise it can be a bitter/sweet moment. But...look ahead and anticipate your future
Life is an adventure! Enjoy the process!
Whew- I’m exhausted!

Second Annual Valentine Social at Cornerstone United Methodist Church
in Newnan Set to Be a Night of Fun and Romance
Local Peachtree Jazz Edition Offers Music, Dancing and Romancing on February 10
The United Methodist Men of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Newnan are proud to announce their second annual “Heart & Soul” Valentine Social on Friday, February 10, 2011, from 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. The event will feature the Live Big Band music of The Peachtree Jazz Edition with vocalist Toni Byrd.
The Christian social was a huge success last year with over 300 guests who enjoyed a beautiful evening of music, refreshments and dancing.
The Valentine Social is designed as an outreach to the community and as an event that encourages fellow-ship, provides a heart-healthy function for those who care to dance, and enables adults to enjoy an evening of Valentine fun. Proceeds from the social will benefit the United Methodist Men’s Mission Programs.
Peachtree Jazz Edition is an 18 piece band with out-standing vocalist Toni Byrd. The band plays an exten-sive repertoire of Big Band music from the ‘30s & ‘40s as well as pop- jazz tunes composed and arranged well into the ‘90s. Original compositions by Mr. Bill Green-haw, one of the band’s trombonists, round out the group’s unique presentations. Peachtree Jazz Edition’s repertoire also includes many original arrangements recorded by such artists as Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Melissa Manchester and Willie Nelson. Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger
Many times over the years I have been asked by clients what to do if they are in an accident. If you are involved in an automobile collision, stop. Georgia and most states require individu-als not to leave the scene of an accident, even a minor one, without first stopping to see wheth-er there are damages or injuries. A person may be criminally prosecuted for leaving the scene of an automobile accident.
Next check for injuries, call an ambulance if necessary and the police. If possible notify oncoming traffic to proceed with caution by turning on your hazard lights or raising the hood or trunk of your vehicle. If you are able to leave your vehicle, move out of the roadway to a safe area and you should exchange information with the other driver. Obtain identifying in-formation from any witness to the accident and ask the police officer who investigates the scene to provide you with an incident number so that you can obtain a copy of the accident report.
Cooperate fully with the police when they arrive and stay at the scene until the police tell you you can leave. Inform the police of the facts of what happened and do not draw any conclusions. Inform the policeman of any injuries to yourself or any other parties.
As soon as possible after the accident, photograph your injuries and damages to your car. Gather all automobile insurance policies in your household for an evaluation by an attorney, and call your insurance com-pany and inform them that you have been in a wreck.
Consult a physician as soon as possible. There may be a lag time be-tween the collision and the full awareness of the extent of our injuries. Certain injuries may not be apparent until some time after the accident. By not seeing a doctor, you risk delaying your treatment and aggravating your injury. Document all your losses, including medical bills, lost wages, and any other incidental expenses that may occur.
Navigating the aftermath of a wreck can be a frustrating and time-con-suming problem. Seek a reputable attorney to assist you in handling your claim effectively and properly.
If you or anyone in your family have been involved in a vehicle wreck, please call Stemberger & Cummins, P.C..

Jeff Binion’s interest in International trucks is not new. He was introduced to them as a boy in Hancock County when he would ride in his uncle’s International truck. “My uncle bragged about its reliability and payload ca-pacity and I think I can still smell the oil and hay in that old truck”. When boys are grow-ing up, they will often “choose sides” when it comes to a brand of car or truck, and this loyalty can sometimes last a lifetime.
Jeff came across an old, faded blue 1961 International Scout about six years ago and thought it would make an interesting restoration proj-ect. “Having restored several international trucks, I thought this would be an easy proj-ect. How wrong I was”! Once he realized he had purchased a rare, first production year model, Jeff knew this one should be well worth a special effort. Much time was spent on run-ning down the hard to find parts, but it slowly and carefully got restored. The engine was to-tally rebuilt by Buddy Brown of Newnan. And with the help of Kelvin Brown of Performance Custom Shop of Newnan, and Jeff Hill’s body shop in Palmetto, The little “Scout” is now re-stored. “This restoration was well worth the effort”, says Binion.
“Scouts” were built by the International Harvester Co. from 1961 through 1980. Jeff’s truck is a model 80 with a removable top and fold down windshield. The four cylinder en-gine is rated at 93 HP and is connected to a three speed manual transmission. They didn’t include such luxuries as radio, heater, roll-up windows or power steering, but did include the “necessary” all wheel drive. “It gives me and my wife, Kathleen, great pleasure to “Roar” down the road at about fifty miles per hour on weekend drives”! They plan to take the truck to Springfield, Ohio next year for the National Scout show.
Jeff is a retired State Chief Probation Officer and Kathleen is retired from the Coweta Board of Education. “I love to talk with folks who own International vehicles, so do give me a call if I can help in any way with your project”. Jeff can be reached at 678-850-6967.

While the election season heats up, you will hear more
and more promises, claims and counter-claims from the
candidates. As a citizen, you may or may not enjoy this
“political theater,” but as an investor, you might be con-
cerned over all the talk about taxes, Social Security, Medi-
care and other financial topics. Will you need to adjust
your savings and investment strategies? If so, how?
Before you think about adjusting your investment strat-
egy in anticipation of any actions coming from Washing-
ton, keep a couple of facts in mind. First, few campaign
promises become reality. And second, due to our system
of government, radical shifts in direction are difficult to
implement — which is why so few of them occur.
Still, we may see some smaller-scale — yet not insignifi-
cant — changes in the near future. In light of this possibil-
ity, what investment decisions should you make? Here are
a few suggestions:
Consider owning investments that are taxed in dif-•
ferent ways. No one can predict what will happen
with income tax rates or the tax rates that are ap-
plied to capital gains and dividends. Consequently,
it may be a good idea to seek “tax diversification”
by owning investments that are taxed in differ-
ent ways. For example, when you sell appreciated
stocks, you pay capital gains taxes, whereas inter-
est payments from bonds will be taxed at your indi-
vidual tax rate. And it’s always a good idea to take
advantage of tax-advantaged vehicles, such as an
IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored
retirement plan.
Stick with quality. It’s a good idea, when owning •
stocks, to invest in quality companies with diversi-

fied businesses. These companies are usually less
dependent on a particular government program,
and they typically have a global reach, so they may
be better able to handle any changes implemented
in Washington.
Stay focused on your long-term goals. Politicians •
come and go, and our political parties seem to take
turns holding the reins of power. Yet your long-
term goals — such as college for your children, a
comfortable retirement and the ability to leave a
legacy to your family — don’t really change. By re-
alizing that you are largely responsible for achiev-
ing your goals, and by following an investment
strategy that’s suitable for your individual risk
tolerance and time horizon, you can make gradual,
but still meaningful, progress toward those goals —
no matter what’s happening in Washington.
Review your strategy regularly. With the possible •
approach of changes in tax policies and in govern-
ment programs that can affect your retirement se-
curity, you’ll want to review your investment strat-
egy regularly to make sure it’s still on track toward
helping you meet your objectives. As part of this
review, you may want to seek out more “tax-smart”
investment opportunities, while always looking for
ways to supply the asset growth you’ll need to en-
joy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.
Aside from voting for the candidates who best repre-
sent your interests, you may not have much influence over
what goes on in Washington. But by “electing” the right
moves to help meet your goals, you can have plenty of
control over your investment strategy.

NOW HERE’S A TIP by JoAnn Derson
• Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your sil-ver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well, and let it shine!
• A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Ga.: “If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get cov-ered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, and then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward!”
• “Dip your toothbrush in baking soda before you add toothpaste when brushing your teeth. You get used to the taste, but the extra scrub really gets your teeth clean, and it’s very inexpensive to use.” -- R.E. in Ari-zona
• Have clumped-up sugar in the canister? No worries. To keep sugar from hardening, add a slice of bread to the container from time to time, and leave it there a day before removing.
• Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The corn-starch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.
• A reader from Michigan wonders: How can I keep from having “static head,” especially when using a hat? The answer: You probably already have the remedy in your pocket or purse -- a tube of lip balm. Rub some on your palms, then run your palms over your hair.

The tax advisor had just read the story of Cinderella to his four-year-old daughter for the first time.
The little girl was fascinated by the story, especially the part where the pumpkin turns into a golden coach.
Suddenly she piped up, “Daddy, when the pumpkin turned into a golden coach, would that be classed as
income or a long-term capital gain?”

Chamber Receives Distinguished Georgia Certified Chamber Designation
Chamber Leaders Accept Award. (L to R) Chamber Chair Elect Dean Jackson, Coweta County Schools, Immediate Past Chair Vicki Kaiser, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, 2012 Chair Dennis McEntire, Newnan Utilities, and Chamber President Candace Boothby proudly display the Georgia Certified Chamber plaque.
Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce
Give us a call, we’ll be glad to assist you in joining the Chamber—770.253.2270 Email: [email protected] Website: www.newnancowetachamber.org
We're proud to announce that the Newnan-Coweta Chamber is a recipient of the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (GACCE) Georgia Certified Chamber designation. This prestigious honor puts the Newnan-Coweta Chamber in an elite group of 25 chambers in Georgia recognized for performance excellence. There are 149 chambers in GA. The Georgia Certified Chamber Program sets standards of excellence for chambers in Georgia. It recognizes chambers that have met those standards while offering guidelines for those to improve their effectiveness. The program provides a peer review process of generally accepted chamber of commerce organizational benchmarks. GACCE follows the U.S. Chamber model, and the designation needs to be reapplied for every five years. Being a Certified Chamber of Commerce places our Chamber in a higher plateau of achievement. It shows we have gone through a detailed analysis of whom and where we are as an organization. Chamber representatives received the designation at the recent GACCE Leadership Conference.

Arranging TermsDo you want to try to begin to make your own arrangements of all the beautiful
flowers and plants you have been growing in your garden? Are you bewildered by the mysterious names and terms you hear designers and decorators expressing?
There are many wonderful books available in bookstores demonstrating and teaching the art of floral arranging. Craft stores and other vendors carry a great sup-ply of tools, containers, and mechanics to achieve instant success. Videos, CD’s, and classes are available for learning. Christmas decorations and designs are popular styles as are other Holiday arrangements.
To help you gain confidence, here are a few basic terms and names of design work explained.

Fresh — plant material (or parts) from a live specimen flower or plant.
Dried — all moisture has been removed from cut plant.
Oasis — foam used to hold moisture and control placement of fresh plant mate-rial.
Sahara — foam (dry) used to hold and control placement of dried or artificial materials.
Treated — using paint, dye, etc. to change the appearance of plant materials.
Hardening — conditioning plant materials.
Conditioning — soaking stems (and/or other treatments) in a container of wa-ter before arranging plant materials to increase water intake and longevity.
Artificial — manufactured item im-itating real flowers, plants, fruits, veg-etables and berries.
Accessory — something, such as a figurine, used to enhance a design.
Base — something used underneath a design (or in place of a container) to improve or raise the design.
Container — holder for plant ma-terials mechanics and/or water for de-sign.
Mechanic — item used to fix the shape of a design into place such as; Oa-sis, Sahara, cup holder, lead strips, wa-terproof tape, needlepoint metal holder, Styrofoam, cut branches, etc.
Line — visual path of design.
Balance — visual (or real) stability of design.
Rhythm — visual movement through design.
Texture — appearance of materials; fine, shiny, slick, smooth, rough, coarse, etc.
Space — open places around the materials and in the design.
Scale — size relationship of one part to another (i.e., leaf to flower).
Proportion — overall amounts of one area of design to another — ex. design to area of placement or plant materials to container, etc.
Foliage — leaves/needles of plant.
Tools — clippers, scissors, needle —nose pliers (small), waterproof tape, wires in assorted sizes and strengths, glue gun, floral foam holders, etc. Used to make ar-rangement.
USDA Extends Conservation Stewardship Program Sign-Up to January 27
WASHINGTON, January 11 – USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief Dave White today announced that the cut-off date for the current Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) ranking period has been extended to Jan-uary 27, 2012. Producers who maintain a high level of conservation on their land and agree to adopt higher levels of stewardship are eligible for CSP payments.
“We want to make sure that people who want to be considered for CSP during this first ranking period have the time they need to complete their applications,” White said. “CSP is a very popular program and I encourage interested producers to ap-ply at their local NRCS office as soon as they can.”
CSP is offered in all 50 states, tribal lands and the Pacific and Caribbean areas through continuous sign-ups. Administered by NRCS, CSP provides many conser-vation benefits including improved water and soil quality, enhanced wildlife habitat and conservation activities that address the effects of climate change.
Producers are encouraged to apply for CSP throughout the year to be considered for current and future application ranking periods. Those who apply by January 27, 2012, may be eligible for current available funding. Eligible lands include cropland, pastureland, rangeland and nonindustrial forestland.
A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, contracts obligations and potential payments. It is avail-able from local NRCS offices and at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/national/programs/financial/csp.
Learn more about CSP and other NRCS programs at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/national/programs.

Full Circle Toys and Collectables in Downtown Newnan is certainly an interesting place to shop, but for Anna Williams, it’s a perfect fit as a part time job during college breaks. Anna has had a long standing interest in Star Wars memorabilia. Since start-ing in March of last year, Anna has become the store’s “Resident Star Wars Action Figure expert and advisor”. “We purchase collectables from individuals, and my job is to evaluate and appraise them for the customer”, says Anna. She also organizes and maintains the displays of other merchandise such as antiques, toys and a varied selec-tion of collectables. She once dressed as “Princess Lea” and stood in front of the store to help draw customers!
Anna is a graduate of The Heritage School in Newnan, and is now in her junior year at Agnes Scott College studying history and Spanish. Her plans are to obtain a gradu-ate degree in public history, and as she is becoming fluent in Spanish, Anna has also considered a law degree with the practice of immigration law. She enjoys horse back riding (but hardly has the time now), acting and knitting.
Publisher’s note: Anna Williams is indeed an employee worthy of being in this issue’s Employee Spot-
light. But it certainly didn’t hurt that her proud grandfather is the publisher of this publication!

How Does Your Business Measure Up?
The competitor to be feared is the one whonever bothers about your business at all, but goes on
making his business better al the time.
(In our business) we don’t want tradition. We want to live in the present, and the only history
that is worth a tinker’s dam is the history we make today!
A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits.
They will be embarrassingly large.
It is not the employer who pays the wages.Employers only handle the money.
It is the customers who pay the wages.
Competition is the keen cutting edgeof business - always cutting away at costs.
You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.
If there is a secret to success, it is the ability to get the other persons point of view and see things from that person’s angle
as well as from your own.
Vision without execution is just hallucination.
