The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

With the new year just getting started, some of us may want to tighten our belts a little to make the money we spend go further. One way to do

this is to find sellers who are willing to provide an excellent value in what they offer. The value of a product or service is, of course, a combination of quality, availability, service and price. Very busy people may be willing to pay a little more to save time. Others are willing to accept a lower quali-ty in exchange for a lower price. Still others may want the

best quality available, regardless of cost. So, the value of a product or service seems to be what meets your needs at the time. What confuses me, however, is a person’s unwillingness to at least look for a better value – especially for those common, everyday things.

One of those common products is popcorn. It may just be that one item which has risen in price faster than the cost of health care! I really enjoy eat-ing that salty, delicious snack when I go to the movie, but now the price has gone beyond what I am willing to pay. The price of movie popcorn is now one hundred times higher than when I was twelve years old! I’ve done the math. When my twelve year old granddaughter, Bailey, is my age, she may have to pay as much as $497.00 for that same snack. (About $925.00 if you include the admission and a soft drink) Next time I go to the “picture show”, as we used to call it, I may (try) to abstain from the refreshments. When the movie is over, I will drive to the nearest Target store and have my popcorn and drink for a mere dollar fifty. Better yet, I could stop by one of the discount grocers and pick up enough for me and my wife for that same amount.

Actually, this probably will not happen. I may not be able to enjoy the movie without the popcorn, and I may not choose to make the extra trip. That’s were value comes in. It means different things to different folks. I think it is very important to be balanced in the choices we make. Always looking for the lowest price may not be the best value. Only you can decide what works for you.

I believe the products and services offered in The Coweta Shopper are good values for the buyers in our community, By advertising, they are asking for your business. So, when you see them, don’t forget to say, “I saw it in the Shopper”!

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Blue? Pink? Neutral!Have you ever been to see a house that has a pink

bedroom for the girls and blue for the boys?

What if that house was for sale and the buyers looking at the house were interested, however

1) don’t have children the appropriate age for the “baby” colors

2) have different gender children than the seller, or

3) don’t have children at all?

They’d have to paint the walls in order to make the house livable for them. Perhaps the house for sale down the street has a more neutral color palette and is move in ready for any buyer. Guess what? Most likely, that is the one that they are going to put under contract.

Why take that risk and send your potential buyer to your competition?

If you are one of the many home sellers that have “decorated” your chil-dren’s rooms and painted the walls a “special” color specifically for them, it’s time to bring out the paint supplies again. Choose a neutral color and let the “theme” of the room show through the accessories that will be moving with you.

Example 1: you have a boy that is all about Toy Story and wants every-thing in his room Toy Story themed. Choose a cream or tan color and let the bed spread be a solid blue, red or green, with Toy Story sheets. Then display the Woody and Buzz Light Year accessories to create the theme for your son.

Example 2: your daughter wants her room decorated in a Disney Prin-cess motif. Choose a neutral paint color (not pink or purple) and have a poster framed of her favorite princess. Use a few choice dolls for dis-play and place a pink, purple or white comforter on her bed with Dis-ney Princess sheets.

This will give your children a pared down version of their previous themed room, but will be move in ready for any buyer viewing your property

Occasionally, I’ll have a client that has painted a mural in their child’s room. They always ask, if they need to paint over it … the answer is … YES! What are the chances that the buyers looking at your house are going to want monkey’s painted all over the walls?

Inform your children that this is a temporary solution and let them nego-tiate a new theme for the next home.

“Although dogs have fur coats, they still need our help

to keep them warm in the winter.”

Please help Georgia Heartland Humane Society in their efforts to identify dogs needing that help. If you have a dog that needs a dog house … or the dog house you have doesn’t provide enough pro-tection from the weather, please contact Georgia Heartland.

As well, if you know of any dog in need, let us know about him/her as well. Please call our hotline (770-830-2820) and leave your name and num-ber. All information is strictly confidential. We will return your call as soon as possible. You can also e-mail us at [email protected] and please place Doghouses in the subject line.

If you have a doghouse that you no longer need, please consider donating it to Georgia Heartland Humane Society. Due to limited transportation resources, we are not able to receive large wooden doghouses.

One of the best materials to place in a dog house to help a dog retain warm, is wheat straw. Cloth-ing or man made materials draw moisture from the air and retain dampness within the doghouse. If you would like to donate wheat straw to place in the doghouses, that would be wonderful.

Camellias ~ Part I

Georgia’s Arbor Day 2011 isFriday, February 18th

Arbor Day is a day set aside for schools, civic clubs, and other organizations, as well as individ-uals, to reflect on the importance of trees in our state and across our nation. J. Sterling Morton, the father of Arbor Day, initiated the holiday in Nebraska in 1872. He said, “Other holidays re-pose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.”

The first Georgia Arbor Day was proclaimed by the Georgia General Assembly in December, 1890. In 1941, the General Assembly set the third Friday in February as the day of our state Arbor Day. While National Arbor Day is the third Fri-

In the South, the most beloved winter bloom-

ing shrub would surely be the camellia. Its

blooms range in color from white to pink to red

and variagated. Camellias bloom from Septem-

ber (sasanqua) until April (japonica). Some camellias are fragrant. Mature height ranges

from 4 to 8 feet; but older specimens may reach a height of twenty feet. Camellias are

broad leaf, evergreen shrubs.

The first camel-

lia to come to the

United States was

Camellia sinensis,

the tea plant — tried

in both Savannah

and Charleston.

Middleton Place of

Charleston claims

to have the oldest

camellia japonica

dating to late 1700s.

Magnolia Gardens

in South Carolina also has a wonderful collection that began in the early 1800s. Camellias

originated in China and Japan. They were known to be in England in the early 1700s.

Camellias prefer acid soil (with organic matter) that is well-drained. Semi-shade such

as under tall trees — like pines — is best; dense shade produces more foliage and few

blooms. They are shallow-rooted and do not like competition for nutrients. Mulch pro-

tects roots and conserves moisture. Northern and eastern exposures are usually the best

locations. Do provide protection from strong winds. In extreme cold — especially a sud-

den drop in temperature — extra protection is necessary. Cover with a bed sheet or light

plastic weighted down with stones. Blooms are damaged below freezing point. Buds are

damaged below 15º and the plant may be hurt below 10º. A few new varieties bred to be

cold hardy will stand temperatures below 0º. They usually have the words Snow or Winter

in their names.

Sasanquas are more cold tolerant and can take more sun than the Camellia japonica.

Some espalier well and others may be grown as a hedge.

“Square Foot Gardening”Lilli and Kent Richards will be guest speakers

for the February 2011 Backyard Association. They

are residents of Fairburn. Although they have no

formal training in gardening, Lilli is a member

of the Camellia Garden Club (Fairburn) and they

are both involved at the Southside Theatre Guild.

Kent is a U.S. Postal Service employee and Lilli

works in the office at Fairburn United Methodist

Church.

Lilli and Kent loved vegetable gardening but

were getting weary of the never-ending chores of

tilling, amending, and weeding. They wanted to

spend more time enjoying their vegetables and

the garden. Square Foot Gardening is an unusual

system that gives them the freedom they wanted

and produces more than enough to keep them in

veggies all year long.

Do you dream of spending less time working in

the garden and more time harvesting? Would you

like to hear how it worked for someone else before

you try it? Plan to join us at the monthly Backyard

Association meeting on February 8, 2011 at 7:00

p.m. at the Coweta County Fairgrounds Exhibit

Hall.

The Backyard Association is an educational

program sponsored by the Coweta County Mas-

ter Gardeners. The presentations are free to the

public and are held on the second Tuesday of each

month at 7:00 p.m. This month’s presentation

will be held at the Coweta County Fairgrounds

Exhibit Hall located at 275 Pine Road in Newnan.

day in April, it is too warm at that time of the year to plant trees in Georgia. Trees should be plant-ed between November and mid-March. Planting during this time allows trees a chance to become established before the hot, dry period of summer. This is why Arbor Day is celebrated every year in Georgia on the third Friday of February.

Every tree planted on Arbor Day helps clean the

air and water, beautify neighborhoods, provide homes for wildlife, conserve energy, and prevent soil erosion, among many other benefits. Arbor Day gives everyone an opportunity to learn about trees and the environmental, social, economic and health benefits they provide to communities.

Noelle Masonheimer is proud to join the team at

Parks & Mottola

Hailing originally from Pennsylvania, Noelle Ma-sonheimer is now pleased to call Coweta County home, and says she looks forward to assisting clients in finding their own homes here. Masonheimer, the latest addition to the Parks & Mottola Realty team, brings years of experience in sales, plus numerous awards and accolades for top performance. She says that her own research of the area’s real estate com-munity led her to the firm.

“As much as my family loves being involved in all that Newnan and Coweta County have to offer, I don’t believe that I’ll have much difficulty convincing others that this is the right location for them,” she adds. The claim seems credible; Ma-sonheimer was named Top Listing Agent within four months of hire – and then Top Producer within 12 months – at the realty office for which she worked and was a bro-ker in North Carolina. “Frankly, a glut of inventory and dismal economy weren’t on my radar; I knew the benefits of living in Asheville first hand, so I believed in my product. I feel the same way here!”

With a background that includes a degree in marketing (as well as Short Sale & Foreclosure Certification), her varied interests have led to stints in advertising, retail and direct sales, all of which were successful. Masonheimer says that after moving numerous times with her family (husband Howard is Director of Nutritional Services for Piedmont-Newnan Hospital), the idea of going into real estate seemed a perfectly natural fit. Her own experiences with house hunting and “starting all over again” are advantageous for families wanting to engage in life in a new community. “To me, what separates the very best in the field of real estate sales is knowing the market, building relationships and meticulous follow-up. That’s my goal, whether I’m working for a buyer or seller,” she emphasizes.

Growing up in an athletic family of seven, Masonheimer enjoyed swimming, hik-ing and a variety of sports. Passing on a love of the outdoors to her own three chil-dren, they were quick to get involved in numerous team sports in Coweta; the proud mom (and dad) can often be found cheering on the sidelines. The family attends First United Methodist Church in Newnan.

Among the area’s most established real estate firms, Parks & Mottola specializes in residential, commercial and industrial real estate and development. Masonheim-er will work out of the firm’s offices in Newnan’s Calumet Business Park.

Legal Briefs:

Bill Stemberger

Chances are that sometime during your life you will be affected by the courts of Georgia, either by participating or by the decisions made both at the trial court and the appellate court levels. Today’s article will be a brief primer on Georgia’s court system.

There are two (2) levels of courts in Georgia, trial courts and appellate courts. Each court’s jurisdiction, the power to hear and determine a case, is outlined in Georgia’ State Constitution. Trial courts are described as either limited or general jurisdiction courts. Courts of limited jurisdiction generally hear less serious cases. Municipal Courts, or city courts, hear cases that involve violations of city ordinances. Magistrate Courts, some-times known as small claims court, hear civil suits under $15,000.00, try viola-tions of county ordinances, handle bad checks, dispossessory writs, and also issue search warrants for the local law enforcement agencies. A person looking to obtain a marriage license or firearm license would go to Probate court. Pro-bate Courts also probate wills, administer estates, and in some counties handle traffic cases. Cases involving children under the age of seventeen (17) would appear in Juvenile Court. This would also include some juvenile traffic cases. State Courts hear civil cases and misdemeanor criminal cases.

The basic court with general jurisdiction for any cases involving state law is the Superior Court. Any civil or criminal case may be tried, and all felonies, serious criminal charges, must be tried in Superior Court. All domestic issues, which would include divorce, must be heard in Superior Court, along with title to land or equity matters. The Legislature has divided Georgia into 48 Superior Court Circuits and each Circuit containing from one to eight (1 to 8) counties and served by one (1) or more judges.

Finally, Georgia has two (2) Appellate Courts, the Court of Appeals of Geor-gia and the Supreme Court of Georgia. Most lower court appeals which would include Juvenile, State Court and Superior Court matters would go directly to the Georgia Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction over lower court cases in which the Supreme Court has no exclusive appellate jurisdiction. The Court of Appeals has twelve (12) judges broken down into four (4) panels of three (3) judges. The Supreme Court of Georgia has what is called exclusive jurisdiction power. The Supreme Court reviews cases involv-ing capital felonies (the death penalty), divorce, constitutional issues, titles to land, and wills. The Supreme Court of Georgia is also the last resort should you not succeed at the Court of Appeals level. The Georgia Supreme Court has seven (7) Justices and hear cases on a regular basis. Both Appellate Courts are set up to correct legal errors or errors of law that were made at the trial level. There are no trials held at the appellate level, instead, the judges review writ-ten records, briefs, and hear oral arguments from attorneys.

Although not all encompassing, hopefully this brief explanation of these courts will shed light on our Judicial System in Georgia.

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

As the World Spins

Dear Dr. Donohue: Will you please explain verti-go? I fell asleep in a chair one evening, and when I woke, I was slightly dizzy. The next morning when I woke up and sat up, I was extremely dizzy. Ev-erything was going back and forth. When I tried to walk, I was bouncing off the walls. The room was moving. My doctor pre-scribed Dramamine. I still wake up dizzy, but not as bad as the first two nights. I am 69. -- E.B.

Answer: Vertigo is a hal-lucination that everything is moving. It’s not. What you describe fits the defi-nition. Many causes of vertigo can be traced to the inner ear, which has two important functions: hearing and balance, the orientation of our body to the things around it. That function is handled by the vestibular system of the inner ear.

Sometimes a viral infec-tion of the ear can trigger vertigo. The only way to handle it is to take a medi-cine such as you’re taking and wait for the infection to clear in about three to six weeks.

Or it can come about be-cause tiny calcium particles in the inner ear have made their way to places where they shouldn’t be. This is benign positional vertigo. When affected people move their head or change position from lying or sitting to standing, the calcium particles activate the vestibular system abnormally, and profound dizziness strikes. When you woke up and sat up, you became dizzy. You changed positions. Calcium particles activated your vestibular system.

A doctor easily can prove benign positional vertigo by provoking a dizzy spell through a series of head and body movements. He or she can coax those transplant-ed calcium specks back to their site of origin through another series of movements, called the Epley maneu-vers. The medicine you mention often lessens symp-toms. Antivert is another useful drug. So is scopol-amine -- in its oral form, not in its patch form.

I made vertigo sound like an easy diagnosis and an easy treatment; it isn’t. Many other serious conditions have to be considered by the examining doctor.

The booklet on vertigo discusses this common malady in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-

Is A Toenail Fungus Infectionpreventing you

from wearing sandals?Toenail fungus infection (“onychomycosis”) is an extremely common infection of the nails by fungus. The infection is stubborn, difficult to treat, and re-sults in unsightly and often painful toenails. Treat-ments are often slow, time-consuming, and far from 100% effective.

If you have this difficult to treat condition and are be-tween the ages of 18-70 you may be eligible to par-ticipate in a research study conducted by Dr. Mark Ling, testing a topical investigational medication for the treatment of toenail fungus infection. All study visits and study medication are provided at no cost to you and qualified participants may be eligible for compensation for time and travel.
