Thanksgiving is just on top of us or has just passed, depend-ing on when you are reading this. Most of my family live in

this area, so we don’t always make a big deal of a huge celebratory blow-out, but we do enjoy getting together. This year, because of in-laws, other friends, etc., our children’s families will not be with us, leaving me poor, lonely and neglected. (And able to do just as I please!) That’s OK, but I do have fond memories of celebrat-ing Thanksgiving at my grandparents home when I was but a wee lad.

In the 1950’s, my Grandfather, a somewhat questionable, albeit quite dignified, entrepreneur, who lived in a fashionable home on

Greenville Street, always offered to host the family for thanksgiving and Christmas. It seemed to be the only place large enough to accommodate my Grandmother’s large extended family. It was a fun time to get together with uncles, aunts and cousins I hadn’t seen in a while, and to enjoy some really outstanding cooking. I can still remember the taste of the ham, turkey and Eng-lish peas, and the twang of cranberry sauce and ambrosia. And that eggnog! Not the kind you purchase, but a homemade version which was for adults only. I was just a child and didn’t know what was in it, but, after having several cups of it, my uncle Pete was walking around wearing his big, polka dot boxer shorts on the outside of his dress pants! I decided, then and there, I would never drink eggnog, as my underwear was not nearly as fashionable as Uncle Pete’s.

And we sure had our share of family charac-ters at the gathering. Besides Uncle Pete and his external drawers, there was my uncle Ed, the “yo-yo king” from Chicago, and some girl cousins who could keep a hula-hoop going ad nau-seam. The most memorable for me, however, was uncle Louie, a one legged hippie who balanced on his one real leg and one “cut to fit” tree limb with a rubber brake pedal on the bottom for trac-tion.

After eating, the ladies would gather in groups, the children would play together and the older men would talk about fishing or politics. There was also a group of older teenage boys who would loiter around in the back yard looking inside the engine compartment of one’s prized jalopy, bragging about its power and speed. I would look under the hood with them, nodding in agree-ment, never knowing what I was looking at. And they talked about sports and girls, fishing and girls, and sometime just girls. A few of them would quickly sneak a cigarette behind a tree when no one was looking. When my cousin was offered a smoke, I remember him saying, “My doctor told me not to smoke because I had too much gas on my stomach”! I guess that’s the reason I don’t smoke now.

Well anyway, I have some great family memories like I’m sure you do. Pleasant things from one’s past seem to be larger and a little more important than what we do today. They are, indeed, com-fortable memories. And the Thanksgiving gatherings we have today may just be those comfort-able memories of the next generation.

JoePostscript: As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

T hanksgivingAt Plymouth, the Pilgrims and Indians

celebrated the harvest. American families today continue to show our gratitude for the many blessings we have, including the bounty of harvest time. Gardens, orchards, fields, and woods abound with treasures as well as our Fall flower gardens. Fruits, veg-

etables, grains, seed pods, brightly colored leaves, brilliant berries, and Fall blooming flowers, such as dahlias, asters, and chrysanthemums evoke the Harvest season. It seems only natural to bring all of these elements into our homes to decorate at this time of year.

Fall harvests bounty is the theme. Autumn’s colors range from reds to golds to oranges to rust to maroon and brown. Textures may be rough, crinkly, ribbed, woolly, dried, or even smooth depending upon place-ment, container, and/or occasion. Found objects such as feathers, antlers, rocks, old ropes, old tools, used barbed wire, or weathered wood could be included. Burlap is a good choice of fabric.

For line material consider using cattails, corn stalks, bare branches, sorghum seed heads, dried corn tassels, dried mullein or dock, tall stalks of dried okra, or sugar cane.

Sumac, pyracan- tha berries, magnolia pods, china berry tree sprays, tallow tree sprays, cotton bolls on stalks, Beauty berries, gold-en rod, various grass seed heads, rabbit tobacco, pine cones, slabs of

bark, mosses, bracket fungus, and grape vines combine well for Fall. Hickory nuts or pecans can be drilled and wired and bunched to resemble grape clusters. Peanuts can add interest to designs. Mag-nolia leaves can be trimmed to shape and size desired and glued around a small cone to create a flower form. Osage oranges add a pop of green and texture.

Mechanics are important! Oasis, Sahara, crushed chicken wire, nee-dle point holders, wire, and tape can secure placement of materials. Fruits and vegetables can be impaled on slim wooden picks or skew-ers. Grapes can be wired on to short branches or tied onto wooden sticks. Hot glue is useful. Toothpicks work for small items.

Containers of wood, pewter, copper, iron (either rusted or black), tin, brass, pottery, antique scales, wooden bases in various shapes, baskets, and vines woven into shapes make suitable choices. Pump-kins, gourds, eggplant, or squashes can be hollowed out to hold a con-tainer of water or oasis.

Order is a part of Nature’s plan and good design. Choose only one line, one form, one color, and one texture to be dominant. Add lesser amounts of different plant materials for contrast and to add interest. For the dining table, at a seated meal, try a low horizontal design such as the traditional cornucopia (horn of plenty) or a tray or platter or board with fruits, vegetables, grains, flowers, and leaves spilling out [protect tablecloth].

Use your creativity and imagination to bring the bounty of your gar-den and land into your home this Thanksgiving.

Moreland Community Christmas Dinner December 1st at 6:30 pm, More-land Mill. You are cordially invited to at-tend the Annual Moreland Community Christmas Dinner sponsored by the More-land Community Historical Society. The MCHS will provide meat, drinks, and paper products. We ask that you bring your fa-vorite side dish to share with those attend-ing. The Moreland Community Singers will be helping us get in the Christmas spirit by entertaining us with Christmas music. Santa Claus will make an appearance and will have small gift for each little one. We are excited this year to have a live nativ-ity scene following our dinner this year. We also could use your help to decorate the mill at 9:00 am on December 1st. We hope that you and your family will join us as we celebrate the true reason for the season as a community. How Do I Get Started? You may call the Volunteer Coordinator at (770) 254-8612 with any questions

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our pa-tients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.

Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have questions about our program or if you would like to attend volun-teer training.

Volunteers for Affinis HospiceAll you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will

communicate value to these patients and their fami-

lies as you provide companionship and a brief respite

for caregivers. You will not need to provide any medi-

cal or physical care to the patient, just a caring heart

and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief

for 2-4 hours each week to allow the caregiver to en-

joy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and

talents to impact someone in their last stages of life

in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-

trained, equipped, and supported. Please call Lynn

Come by and adopt a feline friend from Newnan Coweta Humane Society, www.NCHSrescue.org during the special “9 Lives for $9,” adoption event. Come meet the adoptable cats and adolescent kittens (age 9 months or) older rescued by Newnan Coweta Humane Society, on Sunday, November 18 and 25 at the Newnan PetSmart, 1072 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan, GA.

“For nine (plus) days in November we are making it so easy for people to meet our fabulous felines who are ready to go home with you. And for just $9, you can save a cat”, said LouAnn Jones, Newnan Coweta Humane Society President. “Every day 9,000 animals are killed in shelters simply because they don’t have homes. Just by adopting a cat or two, everyone can be part of the nationwide movement to end the killing of adoptable, treatable animals.”

Staging a Historical Home to Sell

We are fortunate citizens to live in a city that is known as “The City of Homes”. Unlike many towns in the state of Geor-gia, much of Newnan was spared the ravages of the Civil war. Both Union

and Confederate hospitals were set up in some of our most beau-tiful homes, therefore, leaving us with an abundance of homes that are considered Historic Homes.

As home stagers, we talk about making your house appeal to the largest pool of buyers, however, staging is a different kind of ani-mal when you are dealing with a historic or period home. Most historic homes sell to a specific

kind of buyer that is usually looking for original character and architec-tural details that aren’t found in a subdivision or newer home. Here are a few ways to put the focus on a historic home’s distinct features and appeal to the most likely buyers.

Clear out the clutter. Historic homeowners tend to be collectors and aren’t always aware how cluttered and crowded this look can become over time. Show off the good bones and special moldings of the house by clearing away the clutter and arranging furniture to highlight the selling features of the house.

Emphasize the architecture. Tone down the patterns and ornate decor to show off the architecture. Careful use of color can draw attention to the fabulous moldings and features that a buyer for a period home de-sires.

Remove fussy window treatments. Take down the heavy draperies, fes-toons and swags. This will reveal the beauty of the window trim and let in more natural light.

Have more current furniture and accessories through-out the house. Antique furniture, lighting and decor can often feel more like a museum to a buyer and make it more difficult to imagine themselves living in the house.

Most of these are not very expensive tasks and can make a tremendous difference in helping you succeed in selling your unique property. The pool of buyers for these types of properties are not as large as the one for newer or subdivision homes, so take advantage of having a “captured” audience with every showing and prepare your house to sell quickly and for top dollar.
