I sure hope you had your costume ready last week, cause

it was that “scary” time of the year again. Children were

strategically planning their route. Moms and Dads were

shopping for candy, and together, families were decorat-

ing the front door and carving a pumpkin to light the way.

Schools and churches were having Halloween Carnivals to

provide fun and games in a safe environment. And Down-

town Newnan had its annual Munchkin Masquerade. But the

main attraction is still going door to door, “Trick or Treat-

ing”, showing off your costume and collecting the “loot”. It

can be enjoyable for the children as well as adults if you let it.

As I’m writing this article, I’m reminded of the

fond memories I have of this holiday as a child.

My parents would let us out of the car and pick us

up at the end of the streets. We wore our home-

made costumes and traveled by rollerskates from

door to door. (Back then, most in-town neighbor-

hoods had concrete sidewalks.) This all culmi-

nated in the eating of too much candy in a short

period of time, resulting in a most uncomfortable

state.

But my favorite Halloween memories are of the

times I spent with my children and grandchildren.

We always carved a pumpkin on the kitchen floor and installed a proper wax candle – no

plastic or batteries for us! Sometimes my wife would help them make a costume, and some

years they wanted a more professional looking “Get Up”. And each year it was my job to

safely escort them around the neighborhood, repairing broken rubber bands and adjusting

the ill-fitting costume. Their masks were sometimes on the side of their little faces causing

them to trip over everything, but they were “playing the role”, and enjoying the process. As

they got older, they decided it wasn’t “cool” to go with daddy any longer and left me at home.

But then there were grandchildren enabling us to, once again, get involved, which made us

very happy until they, too, got a little older.

Perhaps there will be another generation for me to enjoy spending time with on Halloween.

Maybe we’ll carve a pumpkin and give them ideas of a great homemade costume. And if I’m

still able to walk, it will give me great pleasure to “escort” them to a few houses – just to

bring back fond memories of the times when I was a “daddy who was needed”.

“How Much Does It Cost To Stage A Vacant House?”

This is a question that I receive quiet often and it’s not an easy question to answer. Depending on the seller’s situation, expectations and budget the answer to this question is always different.

For example, if a seller is moving to another house in the same area and can leave behind some furniture for a stager to use, that is a totally different situation than if they move out of state and all that is left behind are the light bulbs and toilet paper holders.

In the first above example the fee can be anywhere from a consultation fee or a ½ to full day staging fee.

In the second above example, you’re talking about renting furniture on a monthly basis and paying the stagers staging fee.

Statistically, the “investment” can be anywhere from 1% -2% of the asking price. It really depends on each individual seller’s situation.

If you are in the position of deciding whether or not to stage a vacant house, perhaps the best questions to ask yourself are these:

How serious are you about selling the •house? Are you going to price it higher than advised and reduce it after a month or so? Keep in mind that there is a “new listing” buzz that happens every time a new listing hits the MLS (multiple listing service). The

first month is your best chance of getting a contract. If you’ve overpriced and the house is empty, chance are low that you’ll have a quick sell.

How much will you need to reduce the price if it doesn’t get an offer• , before you will get a buyers attention? Most agents will say $10,000 - $20,000 (depending on your price point).

How much is it costing you to carry the house every month while it sits without a contract?• Add up your monthly payments, insurance cost, utilities, taxes, yard maintenance, etc. Multiply it by 9 months… that is the average time an empty house will sit on the market if it’s un-staged.

Are you willing to pay the covering cost •or lose the money in profit with a price reduction for an empty house or would you be better off investing 1%-2% in maximizing your asking price by having the house profes-sionally staged?

Remember, buyers don’t by houses, they buy homes and an empty home is only a house.

For more information about staging a vacant house, contact….

Money-Saving Idea ... Being a Savvy ShopperWhen finding a hanging basket on sale for $1.99-or-so, buy one instead of purchasing separate plants. Take out all of the plants, distribute among your planters for more

color and variety. It’s less expensive this way and you’ll always have the basket to use as needed.

is is the last time until maybe next week around mid week that we will see these 2 coaches smile and be cordial with each other. ey are coach Mike McDonald of the Newnan Cougars and coach Clint Wade of the EC Indi-ans. ey are truly good friends for 364 days each year but this coming Friday they will not be. Reason being it is the week of “ e Game” . EC will travel to the land of the cat to be hosted by the Cougars. is game is one of the largest rivalries in the state and not ma er what the record of either team, thousands will show up for each side of the sta-dium. e rivalry started back in 1992 (the rst time these 2 played each other) with the Cougars winning the contest. en the Indians under the direction of former head coach of the Indians took the EC team on a 10 year run defeating the Cougars. Along comes Robert Her-ring to take over for the Cats and then the Cougars go on an 8 year run over the Indians. Indians next, then the Cou-gars. roughout the years the Indians are ahead of the Cats by 11 games to 9

games. However this game has a lot more meaning than just bragging rights. With simliar records in region play, the winner of the game will be the number 2 seed in the region meaning they will get to host at least one play-o game. Both teams are young and have not had the stellar records they usually produce but throw those out the window. Come 7:30pm at the Drake in Newnan this Friday, all bets are o , they will both play like the Denver Broncos. One can not predict this game, it is just too emotional and important to each school. It is also important in the fact that the hosting team will pay their athletic budget for the year.

e crowd will be in excess of 9,000 paid folks and that equates to a good gate which both schools look forward to. e location is rotated each year just for that fact. So don’t forget ~ this Friday at the Drake, game time is 7:30 pm but you may want to come early and enjoy all the fel-lowship and tailgating which will be in-volved. I can promise you a good time and a great game. Until then God-Bless.

Question? ... When do I take down my hummingbird feeder?Don’t hurry this fall to take down your hummingbird feeders. It’s a myth that if you leave them up, then the hummingbirds won’t migrate. Leave the feeders in place

through migration season in the fall. You’ll likely catch any late travelers as they fly through your area.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital To Offer Discounted

Lung Cancer ScreeningsLung cancer causes more deaths than colon, breast

and prostate cancer combined, according to the National Com-prehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). That’s why Piedmont Newnan Hospital is offering lung cancer screenings at a discounted rate of $99.

Patients who meet a certain criteria and are deemed “high risk” for lung cancer will be able to participate in the lung cancer screen-ing program which uses a low-dose CT (computed tomography) screening to detect the disease. Those who are at high risk include people older than 55 years of age who have smoked approximately one pack of cigarettes a day for more than 30 years; those who have smoked two packs a day for 15 years; and those who have smoked three packs a day for 10 years or more.

“The test only takes 30 minutes to complete and the new low-dose CT uses far less radiation,” said Dr. Folk. “This program gives us the opportunity to catch lung cancer at an earlier stage so we have better chances of curing our patients and giving them a fighting chance at life.”

As with many diseases, early detection of lung cancer is key to successful treatment. Screenings such as the low-dose CT can detect cancer before signs appear. Common symptoms of lung cancer include coughing that lasts, blood in lungs, exces-sive mucus, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest area pain, tired-ness, pneumonia, hoarse voice, pain when swallowing, and high-pitched sound when breathing.

To learn more about the lung screening program at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, visit piedmont.org/lung.

“If you bring something weird as a prop, we’ll make a game of it,” added Lyons. “But no bear-traps!” According to Jeff Allen, “If you don’t have fun, we return your money!”N.I.T.W.I.T.S. membership changes occasionally, but this fall’s troupe is a core of seasoned players:

Daniel Lees, Drew Turner, Mary Caroline Moore, Jeff Allen, Justin Jessel, Melanie Jessel, Robbie Kirkland, Beth Lyons, Tony Daniel, and William Pratesi. The N.I.T.W.I.T.S. welcome new members. Adult improv players in training are called D.I.M.W.I.T.S. The N.I.T.W.I.T.S. also conduct a Half-W.I.T.S. internship program for middle and high schoolers, which will start up again in January of 2014. The Half-W.I.T.S. class will give their first public performance in June 2014.

“The Half-W.I.T.S. meet on the N.I.T.W.I.T.S. show dates, basically once a month,” explained Robbie Kirkland, who directs the N.I.T.W.I.T.S. “This schedule provides the ultimate improv experience. The Half-W.I.T.S. learn how to perform improv, to prepare for a show, to usher guests, and get to see a free show in the bargain. We hope to have the same Half-W.I.T.S. returning this coming January.”

“The N.I.T.W.I.T.S. are ever metamorphosing,” said Lyons. “Our shows are always new and different, so please come back and see us again.”

To purchase the $5 tickets, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at http://www.newnanthe-atre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theatre is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

Now, we’re going to learn how to check the coolant level in your car’s engine.

Always check coolant when the engine is o and cool. Open the hood of your car and locate the radiator cap. It will be in an obvious location either on the top of the radiator or on an over ow tank. Because of the pressure in the system under the cap, you will need to push it down and turn it counterclockwise to remove it, just like the cap on a medicine bo le. It is best to cover the cap with a rag to keep your hands clean and to provide some cushion when depressing and turning. e coolant won’t hurt you but is usually pre y slimy. Inside the neck you removed the cap from you should see the coolant. It will prob-ably be brown from all the rust and gunk in the average cooling system. Fresh water is, obviously clear, and antifreeze is usually bright green, but they turn brown real quick-ly. If you don’t see any water in the radiator neck, you need to add some until you do. Some newer cars may have an opaque plas-tic bo le with markings on it indicating the proper uid level. Again, the best advice is to look up the topic in your Owner’s Manual and see what your speci c car looks like on paper before you go rummaging around in the dirty engine compartment. If you have to add only a small amount of water, it is al-right to use pure and not worry about the concentration of anti-freeze. Purists will use distilled water so that other chemicals and minerals are not introduced into the system. But it is alright to use tap water if that’s all you have. Most people use a mixture of 50% water and 50% antifreeze which means the coolant will stay liquid down to something like -30 degrees. If you continually need to add water, you probably have a leak in one of the many hoses, clamps, or other joints in the system and need to have it checked out by your mechanic. Just like you don’t want to run low or run out of engine oil, you also don’t want to get too low on engine coolant. at idiot light in your instrument panel, again, does not tell you that the system is low on coolant, only that it is ho er than it should be and needs pre y immediate a en-tion. Like, safely pull o the road real soon and take care of it. Otherwise, the engine oil gets too hot, the engine coolant gets too hot, the metal engine parts get too hot and….
