It’s About Christmas . . . Simply!

Christmas is a holiday for families. Some holidays remember battles, some recall the anniversaries of famous events in history. Others remind us of the great leaders of our nation. But Christmas has become the day for families.

Some Scrooge-like types complain that the holiday has lost its way today. Every once in a while you will hear someone suggest that is it time to “put Christ back into Christmas.” But when one looks deeply into the dynamics of Christmas, one finds an understanding about life and human relationships that is very near what theologians suggest God intended when He sent the Christ Child into our world—simple, really!

The theological language about Christmas uses words like incarnation and messiah and hope. These words mean rather simple ideas. The Incarnation suggests that the most cosmic event, the coming of God into the world, has taken place in the most simple and natural event imaginable, the birth of a child. The child is declared to be the Messiah, the messenger of the rule of God in human events. And the message is simple – the message is hope, that even in the worst of times the best of things can happen to people to look for strength in one another.

Unwrap the gift of Christmas from its theological language, and you have the family Christmas celebration. The family is the metaphor of God’s intention for the world. Bound each to the other by flesh and love, and nurtured in the hope that sustains its members through a crisis, the family is drawn together in this profoundly religious way. During the Adult Discussions at 9:30 A.M. each Sunday, we're discussing what the holiday might look like: "Christmas in the Four Gospel Homes.” Celebrate in events that draw us together as a family of faith at Covenant Church. Worship and enjoy food and fellowship on Wednesday evenings at 5:45 P.M. during Advent. Eat, drink, and enjoy the Nativity Story as the young people present "A Nursery Rhyme Christmas" pageant during our Christmas Celebration on December 15th at 5:00 P.M. Hold candles high as we softly sing Silent Night on Christmas Eve, either at 4:00 P.M. or 10:00 P.M. Pause during the four weeks of Advent to simply "be" . . . and reflect on the meaning of God's great gift in Jesus Christ. Blessings and Peace,

As we approach Christmas each Advent in worship, we find it populated by the now-familiar characters in the Nativity story: Mary and Joseph; shepherds and angels. In the first weeks of Advent this year at Covenant we invite you to explore others in the Story not too prominently displayed (if at all) in your nativity sets. Let’s engage your imaginations and look at a few of the unlikelier people caught up in the Christmas tale.

Advent I, December 1, 2019 “A Christmas Miracle—Zechariah and Elizabeth” Malachi 3: 1-4; Psalm 122; Luke 1: 68-79 As the first week of Advent begins, we will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Chancel Choir will sing “E’en so Lord Jesus Quickly Come” by Paul Manz.

Advent II, December 8, 2019 “Room for Jesus—the Innkeeper” Micah 5: 2-4; Psalm 72: 1-7; Luke 2:7 The Chancel Choir will sing “Prepare the Way, O Zion” by Robert Lau. Children will help to decorate the Hilda Muller Memorial Mitten Tree during worship.

Hilda Muller Memorial Mitten Tree Sunday, December 8, 2019 Hats, gloves, scarves, mittens! Bring in your donations and place them on the front pew. The children will be asked to help decorate the Mitten Tree during worship. All donation will be forwarded to the Thomas B. Hargrave Daycare Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Poinsettia Memorials Poinsettia plants will adorn our sanctuary on Sunday, December 22nd and Deacons will make deliveries to their Care Partners after worship. Memorials will be due to the church office no later than Sunday, December 15th. The cost of a plant is $10.00 but any donation is most appreciated. Envelopes are available in the pews. Covenant’s Youth Group (C3) will meet on two Sundays in December, the 8th and the 15th.

Christmas in the Four Gospel Homes An Advent Study By Cynthia M. Campbell Sunday mornings during Advent, 9:30 A.M. (Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22) How might a house look for Christmas based on what each Gospel says about it? In Christmas in the Four Gospel Homes, beautiful illustrations from architect Kevin Burns re-imagine each of the four Gospels as a “house,” which the church visits at Christmas. In each section, Cynthia M. Campbell reflects on the distinctive perspective of the birth of Jesus or the incarnation offered by each Gospel. Suitable for individual or group study, Christmas in the Four Gospel Homes creatively re-imagines the season and inspires new and exciting reflection for Advent. If you haven’t signed up for the class, please know you are still welcome to attend. Books will be available.

Sunday, December 15, 2019, 5:00 P.M. Let’s celebrate the holidays with a Christmas dinner at church! Arrive at 4:30 P.M., and you can visit Santa in the Covenant Room. Dinner, carols, a pageant by our young people culminating with our traditional candle lighting will be sure to fill your hearts and minds with the Christmas spirit! We will be taking reservations. An insert will be available in the Sunday bulletin or you can call the church office to make your reservation. If you know that you will be bringing a little one to see Santa, please let Pastor Martha know in advance.

The Angel Tree will be available on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Pick a card from the tree in the rear of the sanctuary, give your name and the card number to the Deacon on duty and help to make Christmas a little brighter for area children. All gifts for Outreach (pajamas only) must be returned no later than December 8th.

Stewardship Please remember to return your estimate of giving cards to the church office as soon as possible.

Safety Net Safety Net is looking for donations of hats, gloves, scarves and coats for adult men and women. They are also in need of pasta sauce if you can grab an extra jar when you’re grocery shopping, they would appreciate it.

Covenant Women’s Association Christmas Cookie Sale Cookie baking will take place on Wednesday, December 4th, at 10:00 A.M. Bakers welcome! The ladies also request a batch of YOUR favorite recipe delivered to the church by Saturday morning, December 7th. Cookies will be packed in one pound packages and will be for sale on Sunday, December 8th, for $7.00 each. (Helpers are welcome for packing, 1:00 P.M., Dec. 7th)

Covenant Women’s Christmas Luncheon Wednesday, December 11, 2019, 12:00 P.M. Lunch, carols, and a program by the Barbershop Quartet. Invite your mother, sister, aunt, friend . . . even you husband! Men are welcome to attend! The more the merrier! There is no charge, but donations towards the luncheon are welcome. The women also invite you to bring a pair of socks. Yes, socks! The socks will be donated to the NEPA Youth Shelter, so we’re looking for adult size sweat socks for boys and girls. Please call the church office with your lunch reservation by Friday, December 6th.

Zambian Challenge Remember our “Covenant Ladies for Zambian Ladies” challenge this past fall? Our final total collected was $1,067.00! That’s almost ninety Feminine Kits! Days for Girls founder and CEO wrote to thank us “for showing your commitment to support women and girls. We are grateful for your generous donation for the CCAP Zambia Enterprise. Together, we are empowering women and girls to be strong, confident leaders, and are transforming lives in a very tangible way. Thank you and I look forward to keeping in touch.” Thank You Covenant Ladies! You rose to the Challenge!

Quote of the Day I believe churches are meant for praising God. But so are 2 AM care rides, showers, coffee shops, the gym, conversations with friends, strangers, etc. Don’t let a building confine your faith because we will never change the world by just going to church, we need to be the church.

The Christmas Joy Offering reflects that God is with us, through the

generous gifts that support church leaders among us—retired,

present and future—who have pointed us to God.

For those of us gathered together in Advent expectation, we know

that the only perfect gift ever given was the one we received in Jesus

Christ -- a perfect gift from a gracious God.

In Matthew’s Gospel, one of the names given to Jesus is Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." We know that in Jesus, we receive the perfect gift of God being with us.

What a powerful gift, a perfect gift, the gift of ... being with. Although

we cannot give the perfect gift, we can give generously to support and

be with our past, present and future leaders in their time of

promise and their time of need.

Deacon Holiday Baskets OUR MISSION Each Christmas the Deacons provide holiday food baskets for friends and families of Covenant Church who may need a little extra help at Christmas as well as needy families through the Outreach program (formerly EOTC).
