Its certainly true that Woodcrat Folk needs to grow.We need to grow our groups, open new districts

and recruit new members. I agree with you thatour uture depends on DFs taking leadershiproles within districts but we cant pin ourhopes on a narrow age band o around 300

young people. We need everyone in themovement to take ownership o our mission o

growth while building an outlook that is inclusiveenough to allow new members to jump straight in.

DFs have a great capacity to contribute to the running

I have been excited and encouraged to read theexcellent articles in Te Courier regarding DFsbeing more involved with districts.

In my opinion, Woodcrat is at a watershed, withmany districts struggling to survive with too ewpeople trying to do too much. DFs can be the lieblood o Woodcrat rather than dancing at thewake.

It's not just running sessions. Help withpublicity, undraising, I, playouts and o coursecamps would make all the diference.

to Red Oak own Hall totake part in somethingthat Woodcrat Folkholds dear democracy.oday, Te Courier canreveal the results otheir elections andusher in a newgeneration o changemakers in the Venturermovement.

A year ago, 15 Venturerswere elected to the rstever VenturerCommittee. Following ayear o meetings andcake, plans andplanning, exciting train journeys and occasionalreplies to e-mails,

Venturers rom across the UK met again to chose

their representatives. Ideas were shared or the

uture o Venturers ranging rom communication to

resources. Te room had a real buzz and people were

excitedly moving about and talking to each other

said Jack Brown who was supervising the ballot box.

Te election was organised and brought together bythe previous Venturer Committee who have grown

in condence and ability over the last year and made

Tere was a great range o people standing: those with lots o

experience in Woodcrat Committees and those with none,

those who were nearly DFs and those who were (very) nearly

Venturers. Every region was contested, something that can

rarely be said o DF elections, and there was certainly huge

enthusiasm rom this rising generation o Woodcrat

members. Te enthusiasm and dedication was inspiring to see

and the maniestos show what an important organisation

Woodcrat is to so many young people. Many have agonised

over the decisions to stand; torn by outside commitments or a

lack o condence. Every single Venturer has thrown

themselves into the whole process once they made the decision

to stand. Candidate Hal Ryan-Gill said Venturer Committeegives me a voice and I can change things. I enjoyed standing

and met lots o people I wouldn't otherwise have met; my

opinion o Venturers has also improved as so many people

turned up to vote. Tis seemed to be echoed by many o those

standing, with a bond o co-operation ormed whilst sharing

    an exhilarating experience.

Venturers got really excited about the idea o taking part in

elections (even i society still deems them unable to vote). One

Venturer, Richard, said I eel really proud to be able to vote in

these elections. Te election gave Venturers a taste o

involvement which inspired people to get involved in other

ways. One Venturer (soon to be DF) said I am quite sad that I

didn't get involved when I was a Venturer but when I am a DF,

I am denitely going to do more!

It was a day with a bit o everything: people returning

exhausted and damp rom touring the villages in search o

potential voters, people excitedly approaching their riends

persuading them to vote or them and even an attempt at

Comment & Debate: DFs Come home, we need you.

15 o those were elected today but T

with the new committee to make Vent

best it can be. Tis can happen in many w

suggesting things about the next Ventu

or being a contact or your group and reptheir problems and ideas, hopes and drea

    new committee.

I am so proud o our DFs in Ealing. Tey areully embedded into everything we do and stillgo out and get involved in centrally organisedevents. I want every district to benet in thesame way.

In my opinion, to make this happen, all DFs should be an active part o adistrict in order to be a member oWoodcrat and attend events, unlessthere are exceptional circumstances. Ialso think DF groups should pay a registrationee like all other groups to help Woodcrat'snancial position.

I would really like to know what other people think.

o districts in part this is becausdiverse skills they get rom workino the DF movement; developingedge peer education, trailblazing avoice and taking on sireponsitilibites. Just look at those coordinating this camp. Would they what they are today i it hadn't beenexperiences as DFs?

I am certain that the District Movement will play a key role in Woodcrat Folk, but I also know wethe entire solution.

    Living under occupation

As many of you may be aware, the local Conservative

MP Mark Spencer has been invited to visit our CoCamp

community on Saturdays open day to see for himself

what the Woodcraft Folk and its sister organisations are

inviting this man to enter and observe our site raises a

number of interesting questions about our most

    fundamental values.

Rather than instantly condemning this man for views

of his party which may not match our own, perhaps we

should be celebrating the fact that a local MP, especially

one with potentially contrasting ideals, is interested

enough in the politically engaged youth of today to visit

our community and observe us doing what we do best.

It may even be an ideal chance to air our views.

In the words of Simon, the co-ordinator for the open

day: Educating others about our work means reaching

out to people who we dont necessarily agree with. Our

by Rosie, a DF, who points out that, although shutting

them in takes a lot more maturity and a deeper

    understanding of our own convictions.

Surely it would be against the Woodcraft ethos to turnsomeone away. Assuming that Conservatives are not

inequality, narrow-mindedness and the inability to

appreciate other opinions, points out Ellen, a DF.

However, it is also important to consider the potential

    Some people have responded

negatively and in indignation that he was even invited.

Martha from Village 17 says: Young people in

Sam was taken and beaten up for an hour. Samcouldnt do anything but pray that this would end.

While he was beaten up all he could think aboutwas being in Ramallah in time for the meeting.Sam really needed to get out of that insecure

painful life. Finally, he was able to go to themeeting and to CoCamp not only for fun but to

After hearing that some adultshave complained of late nightmusic disturbing their sleep, Ibegun to wonder why more elnsand pioneers werent joiningthem; after all young kids tend tohave more sensitive hearing andshould be aected even more.My theory is that the answer liesn their respective choices of bed.
