Nine days ago we woke up in our newvillages, members o a co-operative dream, each one o us ready to make that dream areality. Over the ollowing days new riendswere made; new ideas and ideologies createdand explored; and new skills discovered andshared.

Here in our community are our vibrant towncentres, complete with libraries, own Hallsand independent ca es, the heart and soul o their communities. Our libraries have been

the li e blood o our towns, a hub o in ormation and creativity and the go to placeor un and discussion. Our own Halls havebeen a place to come together and celebrateour community, our abilities and our visionor the uture. Our ca es have been a place tomeet and debate, or ideas to ow andideologies to be ormed. Our campfres andmarquees, stages and kitchens have been ullo possibility, o positivity and o a belie thatanother world is possible.

Here in Sherwood Forest we have built acommunity based on mutual respect andunderstanding, on empowerment andopenness, on sharing and working togetheror the good o us all and all o this is based

As we start to think about goinghome, packing up the tents, using upthe last pints o milk and headingacross the country and the world, our

thoughts are already starting to turn toProject Koodoo, the exciting project to securea new national campsite or our nextinternational camp.

We are delighted by the enthusiasm rommembers o all ages or our plans and dreamsor our new site. All these dreams and more cancome true i we continue to build on the spirito co-operation that has permeated this camp.

LookingForward Vegetarianism should be the default menu

    for Woodcraft Folk

Some meat eaters may missed the meat but mdidn't even think about it

We need to do more tomake sure that we arerepresentative of young leaders and local activists

    a rperson o

    A

Project Koodoo complements our ongoingcommitment to group work. We all have a roleo play - i you are an elfn, make sure yourriends, amily and school are all as excited as weare about project Koodoo and about startingnew groups in new areas. I you are a DF, maybets time to o er to lead a group or take on a

district responsibility. I you are a parent whoikes Woodcra t Folk, but isnt sure how to getnvolved then now is your time to help out.

Tose o us who are active already need to createpaces or all to get involved, in Project Koodoo

and in the growth o our groups.

Te olk will only survive and thrive i weevitalise our group work; setting up new

groups, keeping old ones going or revivingtruggling groups. Group work must be ourocus. In 2017 we want our international campo be bigger and better, with more members and

more groups - we need to start now. GeneralCouncil is working with groups to achieve 10%year on year growth. Te challenge is yours tomake sure that Woodcra t reaches its 100thbirthday stronger than ever.

istrict Fellows, like Woodcra t, has a verybroad spectrum o interests, involvementand types o participation. We have been

working hard this year to try to re-establish moresupport structures and resources or those 16-21year olds who want to help out at a local level, as somany do. I eel that accusing DFs o 'dancing' atWoodcra t's 'wake' or suggesting that those who arenot 'active' enough at a local level should be strippedo their membership does very little to help thesituation as we all try to respond to the challengersaced by the olk.

    DFs, as a semi-autonomous entirely youth-led

Te folk will only survive and thrive if we revitalise our groupwork; setting up new groups, keeping old ones going orreviving struggling groups.

n the Woodcra t Folk we already teacon sustainability and there's been talk

about the environmental impact o Many Woodies are vegetarians and we caveggies much better than most o our Eurcounterpart organisations.

So why do we not show this o ? Why doencourage our members to become vegeand actively promote vegetarianism, or areduced-meat diets at our events?

    Nemos TorpeVillage 19

    I

movement, is a antastic embodiment o theprinciples which Woodcra t stands or. Many DFshere at CoCamp, rom the team at Te Courier, tothe Board, the stage, the services, theentertainment, MES UP and the ca es have had thechance to develop skills, networks and ideas throughnational DF events which in turn help make campslike this so success ul. Clearly there are then thehuge amounts o DFs who also choose to work withyounger groups on a more local level and providesuch vital contributions to our Woodcra t eventsand regular group nights.

I would argue that a more positive response to theissue would be to see how both these approaches canreap rewards or olk, rather than suggesting theyare somehow unable to coexist.

We on national DF Committee would certainly agreethat we need to do more to make sure that we are

representative o young leaders and local aand this year's DF Althing 7-9th o Septemhave a particular ocus on this issue, all 16-old Woodies are invited so please come alhelp change your movement! Tere are cuplans to start looking into 'Rough Guides' oleaders, training camps about district worcommunications networks or those invoregional development and possibly the proshosting local camps or elfns, pioneers and vewhich are entirely organised and supported b

We want to be part o the solution in terms onumbers rather than being accused o being the problem.

From an environmental perspective teven more reason to become a vegan, hothat makes it much more challenging to

balanced and satis ying diet. Already abolmeat rom one's diet drastically reducesecological ootprint; and in a world withpopulations and ood shortages it makes to produce less ood that takes a lot o lanits output, o which meat is one o the biculprits, along with milk and eggs.

As a KP or Village 19 I managed to convivillage it was a good idea to remove almothe meat rom our menu, and we've had wonder ul vegetarian cuisine in its place.meat eaters may have missed the meat butdidn't even think about it! It was a leaexperience or our Austrian delegationmost o whom aren't used to a vegetarian dthink we're better o without meat.

n response to Christys article a ewdays ago, Id like to say I fnd the idea o male appreciating his own genderbsolutely sickening. What would thisnvolve exactly? Basking in the privilege

he has inherited rom thousands o yearso emale subordination? Maledominance is completely intertwinedwith how ideas o masculinity areonstructed, so to de end the idea o

masculinity is, to me, de ending maleprivilege. I see masculinity as a set o gender norms centred on being active, trong and vocal constructed in directelation to the expectations o emininity, e.g. passivity and a ocus

on external appearance. We canee this all too well in the wayn which women who are

Te idea thatyou can separatepatriarchy rommasculinity islaughable.

outspoken and opinionated areo ten much more vehementlyttacked than men who doimilar things, as they are noteen to be ftting intoocietys view o how a

woman should behave. Allhese gender constructions

help to maintain maleprivilege by puttingmasculinity in a defnitehierarchy over emininity, sohe idea that you can separate

patriarchy rom masculinity isaughable. In order to fght

patriarchy, we must smash thedea o masculinity all together.

Jack Yeo Its more subtle than language allows

I was interested to read Christy Quinn's

article In de ense o the maleheterosexual, displayed a dangerousassumption. Whilst the article raised animportant issue, it used the concepts o heterosexuality and masculinity almostinterchangeably. Te ideas it expressedwere excellent aims ending only thisabstract entity known as the maleheterosexual?

One o the purposes o the pride marchwas to fght stereotypes. We cannotthere ore a ord to con use the conceptso masculinity and heterosexuality.

Con orming to this stereotypeurther rein orces the us and

them mentality than has beenat the heart o driving back

    or years.

con orm to our neatly defned categories.Woodcra t is an organisation that prides itsel on being open to all, including those who do notdefne themselves as by these categories.Everybody must be ree to be who and whateverthey want to be, and media plays an importantpart in orming people's views. Tis is why it isso dangerous to write an article rom theassumption that one arbitrary labelcorresponds to another. Te reason that theLGB QQ+ acronym keeps growing is because

there is no one set o categories that can neatlycover everyone. In the end, all labels really do is distract romthe actual issues. Tey say actions speak louderthan words. Te march demonstrated that inantastic style, and we all need to remember

that what defnes us o ten cannot be put intowords. All the rest is arbitrary.

    Volunteering at Camps

What defnes us o tencannot be put into words

Stereotypes have no place in such movements.o achieve true equality or any group they must

be ree rom the constraints o assumptions.Christy is absolutely right everybody needsthe right to express their own personality. Inact, even by opening this debate we are alling

into the trap o excluding people who do not

Maybe we should pay or their membership ee? Im a raid I have none answers and many o the questions. But

that everyone should come away rom a with a connection to it & eel they have & taken proportionally rom it.

Maybe the problem is that we just dontenough personnel working in these areassurely the way to solve this is not wso tened stick in the back o but with a sstrawberry o reward every day.

Even having a meal made & ready or meal times nearby to where youre wli ts spirits immensely and allows peopbond in a way that isnt stress ulthere ore work better as a team.

Woodcra t is a place where we discusissues that arise democratically and perham saying things that have already covered & talked about a million times

am unaware o this and would be interesthear your views, I hope that this discuwill continue and that we can reach awhere everyone is not only at camp but pit as well.

I have spent most o my time on CoCampinside one building o this very large site,

working hard with a great team to help

produce the media output, o tenseeing two 4 oclocks in a day and two11 oclocks also. Tats a lot o oclocks!Te issue is that I eel I dont haveany more connection with this camp

than many others, in act in some waymy view o the camp will be narrower than

others having not had a huge chance toexplore.

Although I moan, I have had an opportunitythat not many, i any, other organisationswould give me and I am thank ul or that.Helping make a newspaper, video & radio or2000+ people rom around the world I stilleel a little short-changed.

Is there space or working volunteers to get anumber o t-shirts or people working in theircentre? Maybe i theres any budget le t over

a ter camp or that centre 50% should be splitbetween all the workers & taken o theircamp ees? Maybe we should say to peoplethat have worked really hard that we will givethem 10% o their next camp big camp?
