CHAPTER 16: WHAT, WHY, HOW

•Franz was at the Duke of Bracciano’s party and the duke had a bad feeling about Albert being out a lone

•Albert has not arrived back and it was getting late

•A messenger delivered a letter to Franz from Albert

•Albert’s letter: take a letter of credit from the desk, (remember no credit cards) and Franze should put in the rest of the money if it’s not enough- Albert needs 4,000 piasters

•The letter was a ransom letter…Luigi Vampa adds at the bottom that if he doesn’t receive it by 6, then Albert will die

•Luigi Vampa is a known criminal/bandit

•Franz was 800 piasters short

•Franz goes to the Count of Monte Cristo for the money; The Count says that Vampa owes him a little debt

•The Count calls the messenger in by opening a window and whistling for him to enter (this is all part of his plan)

•Peppino tells them that Vampa took Albert to the catacombs of St. Sebastian

Page 6: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO CHAPTERS 15- 19 SUMMARY REPORT.

•Franz and The Count of Monte Cristo go to St. Sebastian’s catacombs

•Luigi Vampa tells his men to put down their weapons

•Albert was sleeping calmly…the bandits gave him a cloak to sleep on…shows he is not worried about the situation (remember he is supposed to die of the ransom is not paid in full)

•Albert turns to the Count of Monte Cristo as a hero-eternally obliged

•The next day, Albert pays The Count of Monte Cristo a visit to thank him once more

•He visited Madam Villefort and her young som, Edward, fainted, so the Coutnt of Monte Cristo revived him with a medication

•They discussed how remedies can be poison such as one drop could restore someone and 5/6 drops could kill someone and The Count of Monte Cristo noticed how interested Madam Villefort was about this concept

•The Count of Monte Cristo went to visit the Morrel family

•The household was very happy

•Morrel (Max’s and Julie’s father) died already

•Max tells the extravagant tale about how they overcame their suffering because an “angel” became their benefactor/provided them financial needs (Englishman)

•Max shows him the red, silk purse, the diamond, and the letter

•They believed it was a miracle…the last words that Morrel spoke were “It was Edmond Dantes”

•This makes the Count of Monte Cristo pale…he hasn’t heard that name in a long time and he does not want it to be repeated or else his identitiy could be revealed

•He leaves immediately which seems strange to the Morrels but Max believes the Count is good hearted

•The chapter ends with Julie stating that she believes she has heard the Count of Monte Cristo’s voice before
