WHAT IS A COUNSELOR?•As a verb can mean “to give guidance to”

•As a noun it may specifically refer to a lawyer, teacher, psychologist and the like.

The term counselor has numerous meanings. Most often it is used to describe someone who is a therapist, which could mean a licensed clinical social worker a marriage and family counselor.

QUALITIES OF A GOOD COUNSELOR

An effective and competent counselor will:

1. Believe you2. Share information about the process of counseling

and changed.3. Fully respect your feelings, beliefs and values.4. Acknowledge gender, culture and religious

differences5. Encourage you to do things that you feel are

helpful in your healing journey.

6. Encourage you to build relational support outside of counseling by connecting with supportive and respectful people and groups.

7. Offer you new skills to help you move towards your goals.

8. Invite your feedback regarding the ways in which counseling isn’t helpful

9. Make it easy for you to discuss any concerns you have about counseling.

10.Not force or pressure you into doing anything you don’t want to do.

11.Assist you in deciding when counseling is done.

ROLES OF A COUNSELORThe rapport of the client and counselor is an important factor in counseling. The counselor must:

1. Be likeable and exhibit interpersonal skills2. Be flexible and able to meet individual needs by

providing person-specific attention.3. Be available in multiple sessions.4. Have something very applied and concrete to

offer.5. Exhibit a caring attitude.

A counselor must attempt to facilitate a client to solve their own problems yet demonstrate a genuine concern and compassion for the client’s dilemmas.

The counselor must realize that information given to the client may take time for the client to effectively implement into their lives

The counselor should encourage the client to ultimately draw their own conclusions and choose the direction they want to take it

BEING A GOOD COUNSELOR

This defines counseling and describes skills in an effective counselor, including being the following:

1. Non-judgemental2. Having warmth3. Genuineness 4. Discretion

•Counseling involves a process. • The aim of which is to help others to help themselves by making better choices and becoming better choosers of options.• The counselors repertoire of skills includes those of forming an understanding relationship.• In a counseling relationship the counselor and client work together to explore every aspect of client’s circumstances, enabling the individual to re-evaluate his or her experiences, capabilities and potential.• Counselors facilitate full and confidential expression to the clients feelings without diverting other attention to his or her feelings
