Loving Our Neighbor

Jesus was once asked, what was the greatest commandment? Here is how Mark records

his reply and the end of that encounter:

Jesus answered, “Here is the most important one. Moses said, ‘Israel, listen to me. The

Lord is our God. The Lord is one. 30

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all

your soul. Love him with all your mind and with all your strength.’ (Deuteronomy

6:4,5) 31

And here is the second one. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ (Levi+cus

19:18) There is no commandment more important than these.” 32

“You have spoken well,

teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one. There is no other God

but him. 33

To love God with all your heart and mind and strength is very important. So is

loving your neighbor as you love yourself. These things are more important than all

burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34

Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely. He said

to him, “You are not far from God’s kingdom.” From then on, no one dared to ask Jesus

any more ques+ons. [Mark 12:29-35 – NirV]

The faith community centered on Jesus must take seriously this teaching. We center

ourselves on worship, learning, and fellowship, but we also extend ourselves in mission

and outreach to Luray, and beyond. We are trying to live out this command, and when

we do we o#en find it to be a source of deep meaning and something of a life purpose.

We live in a world that desperately needs to know that they are loved, and that this love

originates in our God, who made us and desires our love returned to Him and others. So

how do we engage that? During September, I’m going to try and help us to do just that.

We will engage the topic of Loving our Neighbor in worship through the lens of togeth-

erness. The community centered on Jesus is to love neighbors both individually and to-

gether. I’ll explore that thru the ideas of things that we are already doing or at least try-

ing to do: ea-ng together, belonging together, forgiving together, changing together,

and being together. I hope you’ll come and join me in this important conversa-on. If the

Church is to be ac-ve and relevant today we have to see our do-goodedness as living

out this call that Jesus has laid before us, and modeled for us. To end our series we’ll

have a meal and a -me of fun on the 5th

Sunday of September (September 29, 2019)

This will also serve as a -me to ‘invite’ and ‘bring’ our neighbors to church with us – to

experience that togetherness in ea-ng, belonging, being forgiven, changing, and simply

enjoying simply being together. I hope you’ll join me as we explore loving our neighbor

this month!

I hope to see you Sunday!

Erich

Back to the Basics

Why is contempla+ng Christ

who is the Son of Man

Create a feeling of confusion

That we some+mes don’t understand?

He was the changer of a weary world

and on His shoulders bore our sin

Giving to us under no uncertain terms

the chance to “be like Him.”

To get “back to the basics” friends,

we must all learn how to forgive.

We need to “love one another”,

and also the way to live.

Our preacher devoted one solid month

on the basics we all should know

to lay the founda+on for each one of us

and help teach us how to grow.

So what do we do aIer what we’ve learned?

We’ll start living what we have been taught

By helping others to live for Him

we’ll acquire the solu+on we sought

Yes, it’s back to the basics

but we realize there’s more

Keep on coming back on Sunday and

take the Lord back out the door.

Faith – Hope – Love In Action Elly Hakel, UMW President

September 2019

The United Methodist Women’s Program calendar year runs from Sept 1 till August 31st of the following year. We are ready to begin a new year this month. The theme for 2019-2020 is Let Y our Light Shine.

The UMW nationally and around the world are committed to four companies linked to our four priorities: Just Energy for All (Climate Justice priority) Interrupt the School-to-Prison Pipe-line (Criminalization of Communities of Color and Mass Incar-ceration priority) A Living Wage for All (Economic Inequality priority) & End Maternal Mortality (Maternal Health priority). Along with having the opportunity to learn more about these specific companies; locally I encourage each woman in our Unit/congregation to let your Light Shine as we give to Choices in various ways throughout the year, support Kits for Confer-ence, the Life Center, the I CAN CLUB, assisting members of our congregation in times of need and numerous other ways to witness to our faith each and every day. The Harrisonburg Dis-trict UMW provides a reading list that gives us a broader insight into the four areas of justice.

Our calendar for this new year within the UMW is already

shaping up to be a busy year and time of fellowship. Pray

for the UMW as we reach out day by day to let our Light

Shine in mission for women, children and youth.

Harrisonburg District UMW Social Action Chair, Delores Reid sent the following message: I am writing to remind you of several things and the importance of being involved in making positive changes in our community and letting our voices be hear during these changing times. We as UMW have a long history of speaking up for the marginalized and demonstrating what our Christian faith is about. If you have not yet gotten on the mail list with Kim Bobo and VA Interfaith Center, I encour-age you to do so at Virginiainterfaithcenter.org. This is a good resource for finding what is happening as well as ways we can be a part of change.

The Virginia UMW Annual Meeting will be held in Rich-mond at Reveille UMW on Oct 26. Keynote speaker is Harriet Olson, General Secretary, UMW. Harriet Olson has served as CEO of the UMW’s national administrative and policymaking arm since 2007. UMW is a US-based women’s organization in the UMC, with nearly 800,00 members engaged in work with women, children and youth in the US and over 100 other coun-tries. UMW operates and owns the Church Center for the UN in NYC, which they make available to the UN-NGO Community. Ms. Olson practiced real estate and environmental law (1983-

96) in NJ. From 1996-207, Ms. Olson was senior vice-president for publishing, Editorial Director of the UM Publishing House in Nashville, TN whose imprints include Abingdon Press and Cokesbury. Ms. Olson has a bachelor’s degree from Houghton College in Houghton, NY, where she serves on the board of

trustees.

Elly Hakel has registration forms. There is a $15.00 regis-tration fee which includes lunch. Meeting begins at 9 am. Deadline for registration is Oct 16. Carpools most likely will be available with women in the Harrisonburg area.
