JORIS JANSZEN RAPALJR 1604 - 1663 (No. K-35 in this Record)

Innkeeper, New Amsterd~m, New Netherland.

Joris Janszen Rapalje, Hugu~not, son of Jean, was baptio;-,ed 28 April at Valenc:l~"nnes, died .in Brooklyn, New Netherland, probablr early in 1663; married 21 January 1624 in Amsterdam, Catalina Trico, dauphter of Jeronimus. She was born in Pry, Belfium, about 1605 and died 11 September 16~9 in Brooklyn.

Joris Janszen Ra.palje, as he w~=~s known in new NetherlA-nd, va.s the lAst of six children of Jean Rl'lpareillet and his unnamed vife. He was baptized 2g April 1604, as entered in the register of St. Nicolaes Roman Catholic Church of Valenciennes. Since 1668 Valenciennes ha.s been in the rlepllrtment du Nord of France. Previously it had been Haincut, a province in the part of Spanish Netherlands.

The n<Jme of Joris e.ppMrs ns Georges, illefitimRte son of Jean on the baptismAl record. It was not unusual for Walloon and Huguenot parents to t!l.ke their children to Roman Catholic priests to be baptized in the absence of Protest~nt clergy, or to escape persecution. Similarly, it w~s not uncommon for the priests to refuse to recofilize the validity of Protestant marriRges, recording the children of such marriAges as illegitimate.

Joris, livinr in AmsterdRm in 1623, with his prospective bride Catalina Trico, had been recruited vith a number of other families, probably mostly W~lloons, to r~ as colonists for The West India Compny's venture in ~msrica. Their accep~qnce wqs subject to their bein~ Olllrried before the ship's d<>parture. To meet this r~ouirement necessitated the public~tion of the intent to marry and the actual marriage, a process which then usually required !'It least three veeks. The banns +'or Jorig and Catalina vere published on SaturdR.y, January 11, 1624, and their marriage took place on Sunday January ?.lst, at the Walloon Church in ~msterdam, R week eRrlier th~n normal. The records indicate that probably their parents vere textile workers, and that Catalina was probably born in Pry, Belgium, not too far from Valenciennes.

Four days later, on 25 January 1624, th8 couple sailed on th~ ~ndracht (Unit~), A.driRn Foriszen Tienpont, skipp8r. Few of their fellov passengers !'ire known hy name, though Sebt:1stian Ja.nszen Krol, John Honfort and his wife Jacoueline l-forMu, and a.hout a dozen other families with mRrriageabl~ dFlUfhters and sons, with thirty una~companied men were aboard. Some were undoubtedly Walloons. The shin arrived in Nev Netherland in late Harch or early 1\pril, 1624, ~;~nd P.fteria stay of a few d"'ys w~nt up the Hudson to Fort Orange (~lbany), New York. These imnigrant~ were th~ advance party for the colonizA-tion plP.nnen hy the Hest India Comp~'~n:r. Soon after the h!'lrvest of 1626, the Comp<1ny resettled the eivht fAmiUea livinr in F'art 0r1'lnre, in Manhattan, which then became the c~nter of operations for Ne~ ~etherl~nd. This included the household of Rapalje which now included their first daurhter. Th~r~ wer~ but 270 white inhabitants in Manhattl'ln "'t this tlme, and sufficient lann so that the families brought down river could 3Upport themselves and have su;+'icient left over for the victualling of ships which vould put int, port for trad~. Since Joris could not follow his trRde of WMvinr: under the rP-fUl"ltions of the West Ind1a Comp!ln~, he found it ~xpedient to support his f~=~mily in other ways. He is suppos~d ta h~ve opened the first tavern shortl;..· after ar"'ivinr. in Nl'lnh"l.ttan. He was a tl'l.vernkeeper as late as 16 March 1648 when he and eleven other tavernkeepers promised ~s true men to live up to the newly imposed rules in every V~ay and l'lS best they could. The extensive rules were designed to control "unreasonable and intemperate drinkinp" at night and on Sundays, and the owners of taverns must hav~ some other legitim9te occupetion. Joris chose f~rminr. At first and vent in for cattle breedinf. In June 16'37, Joris bought from the Indians a plantation a.t the cove which the Dutch named ffWallabought". Many years later it becAme the site of the famous Brooklyn Navy Yard.

JORIS JANSZRN R~PALJE ~ PagP- 2.

ThP. patent for the land lvas cc;1firmed to Joris Ra.pa.1je by Governor Kieft on 17 June, 1643. TMe f~rm of 335 acres was a.lwa.ys known as "Joresy'e Plantation" by the Dutch, and as "Georgie's PlRntation" b:v the 'Enrlish. Until Rapalje's far:n viAS well esta.hliehed Rnd sho•Iinr a good profit, and until he had sa+,isfactorr buildings on it, he And hie family continued to live on their property on Peqrl Street, which extended to Bridge Street, where the tavern flourished, in l~anhP.ttan. About 1654 they removed to the Brooklyn farm.

There is evidence that Joris Rapal.1e had other interests durinp thA time he hpt tavern a.nd built ~ profitable farm. In 1641 he 'W<l s one of the men called up!.m t,> rive advice regarding the trMtment to be ad.ministered to the Indians who had murdered Claes Swits. In 1647 Jan Dircksen from ~msterdam ma.de his will whil~ lying sick at Jorie Rapalje'e house. ~an was the ma.ster carpenter of the ship Swol, and in that will he named Rapalje "Chief Boatswain", not of hie ship, btlt evidently because Jorie was using hie knowledge of the bays and river around the city.

There is no evidence that the RApalje tavern 'WAS ever cited as a disorderl~ place. Jorie seems to have obeyed th~ lnws ~md honored his promise to abide b;v- them. He died at the age or 59 and was survived by his wife who died in 1689 at the a~e of 84.
