SONG FOR A HAT

by Toi Derricotte

when i put my hat on level i'm not doing it to hold my hair down i'm going out in a summer wind without excuses i'm a god setting the first boat on water

my hat is a large umbrella that carries the sky upside down my hat is a mean dog on a back

porch you better watch out for notice my hat on a hat rack looking empty have you seen how full it hums its flowers or recites the

rosary to its straw it is light- streams between woven night and the opposite

who can chart the way back to

language a woman in a hat has

already embarked

her hat gets there first then she does

hurrying to catch up
