The Preamble

• It starts out as “We the people of the United States….”• The preamble is the opening statement to the United States

constitution. It explains why our government is a republic.• The preamble can be broken down into many parts. All of the parts

are very important for understanding the constitution.• One of the parts of the preamble is, “Promote the general welfare”,

which means that the citizens will be taken care of as well as possible• Another part is “Provide for the common defense…” which is about

how no individual state has the power to defend themselves against attack.

The Amendments

• The 8th amendment protects us from having to pay excessive bails.• The 2nd amendment is “The right to bear arms” which is to have

weapons • There are 27 amendments • The 1st amendment is the “ Freedom of speech, Freedom of religion,

and Freedom of the press• Before an amendment can take effect, it must be proposed by the

states by a 2/3 vote of both houses of congress.• The 7th provides the right to trial by jury in certain civil cases
