    On March 26, 2010,

the non-partisan Congres-sional Budget Office (CBO)

    announced that by 2020, the

U.S. debt will be 90% of our

    Gross Domestic Product.

This is a debt of $170,000

    per household.1

    Currently, the U.S. tax

    brackets are set against produc-

tivity. The more you make, the

more you pay. However, it is not

    directly equitable to ones income

    percentage. [Figure 2-A] This is

a progressive tax and is one of

ten pillars laid out in Karl MarxsCommunist Manifesto.

Under the current tax system, the tax burden is shifted to a small

number of people. [Figure 2-B], This

leaves vast amounts of Americans not

    contributing. This burden was prom-

ised to be shifted even further towards

the few when President Obama was

still campaigning. [Figure 2-C]. Thistactic allows for those in control of

the tax system to manipulate large

    populations of voters by promising

them tax cuts. It doesnt however,

    solve inequality, it creates it.

    Ever take home your pay-

check and glance over those mean-

    ingless deductions your employer

takes out week after week and wonder

why? Why is the government with-

    holding money that you rightfully

earn? The government is taking yourmoney and paying your tax liability

before its even due. The Internal

Revenue Service doesnt trust you to

pay your taxes on April 15th, so they

take the money from your paycheck

each week to pay the taxes. Consider

if you had that money to invest, pay

down debt, or even save! Well, myfriends Ive got a concept for you:

The FairTax plan is a com-

    prehensive proposal that replaces all

    federal income- and payroll-based

    taxes with an integrated approach,

    including a progressive national re-

tail sales tax, and a prebate to ensure

no American pays federal taxes onspending up to the poverty level.

The amount of the prebate each

household will receive at the begin-

ning of each month will be based on

the poverty level which is determined

by the US health and human services

during that particular year and as

well as how many people live in the

household. The fair tax aims to re-

move taxes we pay on lifes necessi-

ties. The Fair Tax is dollar-for-dollar

    federal revenue neutral, meaning the

Fair Tax isnt designed to increase orreduce revenue for the governemnt

    and, through companion legislation

will repeal of the 16th Amendment.

    The FairTax Act (HR 25,

    S 1025) is nonpartisan legislation.

It abolishes all federal personal and

    corporate income taxes, gift, estate,

capital gains, alternative minimum,Social Security, Medicare, and self-

    employment taxes and replaces them

with one simple, visible, federal re-

    tail sales tax administered primarily

by existing state sales tax authori-

    ties.

    The FairTax taxes us only

on what we choose to spend on newgoods or services, not on what we

earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient,

    transparent, and intelligent solution

to the frustration and inequity of our

    current tax system.

    The FairTax:

    Enables workers to keep

    their entire paychecks

    Enables retirees to keep their

    entire pensions

    Refunds in advance the tax

    on purchases of basic necessities

    Allows American products

    to compete fairly overseas

    Brings transparency and ac-

countability to tax policy Ensures Social Security and

    Medicare funding

    Closes all loopholes and

    brings fairness to taxation

    Abolishes the IRS

    Now that youve seen the

nuts and bolts, you have a mil-lion questions, right? How? Why?

    When? Dude, isnt that impossible?

These answers are quite simple, like

    the FairTax. How-through education

we inform American citizens there is

a better way of taxation. There are

    research articles and in-depth FAQs

on FairTax.org. Why-Because ourcurrent taxation system punishes

those who work hard, get educated,

and are motivated to succeed. When-

Now seems like a good time. Were

in a recession, and the current plan to

help repay the huge deficits is to raise

taxes, not just on the evil ultra rich,

but on those of us who are workinghard to earn a decent wage. Dude,

thats impossible- Naw, bra, its not.

Is this the year to launch an overall

reform of our tax codes, shouldnt we

just go ahead and scrap this thing?

    [our current system of taxation.],

said Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) in

an interview with Curtis Wright, just

a couple of weeks ago. The FairTax

is the number one vehicle that were

looking at. It addresses our corporate

    taxes, it addresses our competiveness

globally, and it addresses the predict-

ability of what Im going to pay.

This is from our senior Senator right

here in North Carolina. So, bro, its

not only possible - its probable.

There are many unintendedbenefits of the FairTax as well. Peo-

ple who are not currently paying tax-

es, like drug dealers and illegal im-

migrants, would now be paying taxes

into the system because they would

purchase things and be taxed at that

point, instead of getting paid by their

employers and not reporting it tothe IRS. Also, the price of goods

    and services would decrease because

companies that no longer have to

pay corporate taxes would pass the

savings on to the consumer. All the

things we learn in economics stay the

    same: supply and demand, competi-

tive markets, market share, and soon, but the FairTax puts everyone on

even playing field via a much sim-

    pler way of taxation.

So, next time you get a pay-

check, look at all the automatic

    deductions and ask yourself, What

    could FairTax do for me?

With March now on its way

out like a lamb, April is already

upon us, and with it comes the

    one-year anniversary of the con-

    servative Tea Party movement. It

is hard to believe that it was a year

    ago that some 300,000(http://www.

    cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/02/08/avlon.tea.party.future/index.html)

    Americans, nationwide, mobilized

and took to the streets of their local

    communities. Protesters, enraged

by out of control spending in the

form of bail outs and stimulus pack-

ages, which in turn mean more andmore taxes, were feeling the same

injustices felt by our forefathers in

    the mid-1700s. Though many feel

the movement has lost much of its

    momentum, while some argue its

credibility as well, the original an-

guish is still very much alive.

No taxation without rep-resentation was the cry of patriots

in the 1700s as taxes were imposed

    on colonists without having their

voices considered by the Crown. It

took the Revolutionary War to final-

ly get that issue settled. The slogan

was resurrected in 2009 and his-tory repeated itself as overwhelm-

ing discontent fell on deaf ears in

Washington. Now, as tax day 2010

    is fast approaching, demonstrations

    by recession-weary Americans are

predicted to dwarf those seen the

    year before.

The phrase taxed enoughalready was also present on picket

signs at 2009s Tea Party rallies.

With the recent passage of the con-

    troversial Health Care Reform Bill,

and its generous helping of extra

taxes, this phrase takes on a deep-

    er meaning. Here in Wilmington,

fliers for April 15th rallies can befound all over town sporting those

    three, succinct words. But what

    has the Tea Party accomplished?

    Is the movement simply what

popular media tells us it is: radical

    right-winged racists that are begin-

ning to border on domestic terror-ists? (http://www.huffingtonpost.

    com/jeff-schneider/one-if-by-land-

    americas-n_b_513608.html)

    The Tea Party movement

is defined by the Tea Party Patri-

ots as having three pillars to their

    platform. First and foremost, fiscal

responsibility. Fairly self-explana-tory, if you ask me. America, now

more than ever, is in a deficit. We

could banter back and forth all day

    about which administration created

the deficit, but what would that ac-

    complish? As a lifelong Southerner

and citizen of North Carolina, Iwas taught to constantly strive to

accumulate my money. I was also

taught to not spend money that I

dont have. Maybe I am missing

something, but it seems as clear as

    1+1=2. With rumors circulating

  • 8/9/2019 The Conservative Hawk | Issue 7

    7/8

    that the Obama administration has

spent more than all other presidents,

    Washington to Bush 43 combined,

someone is adding 1 and 1 up to 3

    in Washington.

The next goal in the Tea

Party movement is to restore a con-

    stitutionally limited government -

the type of government framers like

    Jefferson and Adams intended for

America. It is my personal opinion

that people must be forgetting that

these United States are literally, justthat: united states. 50 state govern-

ments, ruling in the best interest of

    their constituents, long ago chose

to join together under the wings of

    a federal government. These states

used to look to the federal govern-

ment simply to provide a safe andstable environment in which de-

    mocracy can flourish. Tea Party

Protesters are concerned as the cur-

    rent federal government feels con-

    stitutionally inclined to chose cor-

porations to bailout, to impose taxes

on certain income groups to pay for

those without health insurance, andall while squelching the voices of

    these states governments for some

    higher purpose. Talk about abusing

    the Necessary and Proper clause.

The final goal of Tea Party

Protests is to allow the rollercoaster

known as the free market to rideout its course. This means econom-

ic, and thus individual, liberties for

every American. It also means that

businesses will come and go. This

is free market 101. If GM and oth-

er auto corporations are edging on

failure, this is the free market tell-

ing us, This old technology will

disappear for good reasons and a

    newer, better technology will arise

in its place. Think of it like sea-

    sons: summer is always amazing,

but you know winter will be back.

It is this economic principle that

our nation was founded on, and it is

the same principle that the current

    administration is exhausting itself,

    and our money, fighting against.

So, now, a year after Gads-den Dont Tread on Me flags were

    raised and colonial-reminiscent

    protesters flooded communities

    with grassroots Tea Party demon-

strations, are these goals being met?

The answer is plain and simple: no.

But, there is a silver lining to everycloud. As approval ratings for Pres-

    ident Obama and his administration

continue to plummet, it seems that

more and more Americans are tak-

ing notice. As most are well aware,

    Massachusetts has elected its first

    Republican senator since 1972. So

grab your picket signs and tri-cor-nered hats, tax season is upon us.

Make your voice heard while you

still can. There is no need to hesitate

or wait. No protest, no matter how

big or loud, may be able to stop the

snowball that is the Obama admin-

istration, but as Martin Luther Kingwrote in his Letter from a Birming-

ham Jail, Wait has almost always

meant Never. We must come to

see that justice too long delayed is

    justice denied.
