Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

Cancer Support at FUMC
I received an e-mail from a young woman after she visited at her first Cancer Support Meeting at FUMC. It read: “I wish I had known about this type of meeting in the Conroe area back when I was going through my cancer treatments. It would have helped me so much. Thank you for letting me tell my cancer story today at your meeting. Talking to others that have gone through the same experience gave me so much courage and hope.”
After reading this e-mail, I knew that we needed to get more information out to the community about our inspirational Cancer Support Group here at FUMC. Please tell your friends, neighbors, and family about this ministry.
The Cancer Support Group meets every other month at noon in the Asbury Room. The group is currently made up of about 20 men and women of different ages from our church and the community. Our group consists of those going through all types of cancer, survivors, and family members.
We are a fun group laughing and enjoying each other’s company. We eat lunch together, we pray and encourage each other, we give away exciting door prizes, and we learn from speakers how to take care of our bodies. We have enjoyed many speakers that have educated us on topics like nutrition, medicines, sleep disorders, dental care, skeletal health and all types of cancers—lung, skin, breast, prostate, etc. Needless to say, we have learned a lot.
We have also given back to our community. The group has given $1,000 each to Lone Star Family Health Center to help purchase a mammogram machine and to the new Houston Methodist Hospital in The Woodlands that will open in 2017. It will help with educational and preventative screening care for Montgomery County residents going through cancer.
If you know of someone that has just been diagnosed or is currently undergoing treatment, please tell them about this special ministry. We don’t want anyone to walk their cancer journey by themselves. Please have them call the church office at 936.756.3395.

Thanks for Sunday’s beautiful anthem. I also want to give another shout out to our Choral Interns for their
masterful singing during the choir’s residency in New Orleans. Not only are we proud of them but we are
proud of our choirs representing our church and community choir so well in their performance in the St Louis
Cathedral. So here’s the inside tip if you want to see how it’s all accomplished. Come be a part of our Open
Rehearsal program. You don’t have to sing. Just come and let the music sweep you off your feet. It’s all
free—free listening, free devotionals/prayers and certainly free snacks!
Children’s Choirs/Junior Choir – We do not meet for rehearsal this afternoon. Be sure to review your music
for next Sunday morning. We combine our voices with the adult choirs for our Sunday morning anthem at
8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Work hard on your parts in our musical.

discipleship
outreach ministries
Discipleship is the practice of being a Christ-follower through worship, prayer, study and acts of compassion and justice found in
witness and service. We become disciples as we practice living out our lives through knowing, loving and serving God in the world.
Spiritual Practices of Lent
The 40 days of Lent invite us into a time of study, reflection, forgiveness and reconciliation. As we
travel with Jesus in the wilderness, on the uneven roads of Galilee and by the lakeside we learn anew
the teachings and experience the ministry of our Lord. Each week we will explore a spiritual practice;
one that Jesus practiced and that we can practice as we journey through the Gospels together.
Alms Giving Jesus said, “But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so
that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:3-4
Almsgiving was a common practice where one could gain favor and influence with others through giving
publically to the poor. Jesus cautions us, his disciples, to quietly and with joy meet each other’s needs.
Jesus and his disciples gave alms as part of their spiritual practice; one of their number was the group’s
treasurer and Jesus saw giving to the poor was not an option, but was expected. The reward, Jesus
says is not favor with God, but rather a blessing experienced by the simple act of loving and providing
for others. Giving is an act of worship, not just adding to a church budget. We are giving a thank
offering to God and to the work of Jesus Christ in the world. The way of the disciple is to respond to
the goodness that God pours into our lives.
