The Concordia Chimes July 2015
June 30, 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am very pleased to inform you that
on Sunday, June 28th, a positive vote was cast to call Douglas
David Barclay as Concordia’s new pastor. Mr. Barclay is a
recent graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Philadelphia. His bio is included below for those of you that
were unable to be with us.
Now that he has been officially called by a congregation, Mr.
Barclay will be working with the Maryland-Delaware and New
England Synods to schedule a date for his ordination. His start
date at Concordia is dependent on the date of his ordination
and his relocation to Connecticut. Updates on the progress of
these events will be communicated once they are scheduled.
Over the next several weeks please continue to pray for
Concordia and Mr. Barclay. Just as God walked with us during
the call process and continues to walk with us, we need to walk
with each other; pastor, leaders and everyone in the
congregation, as we enter into this new chapter of our spiritual
life.
God’s Peace,
Carol Stoneman Congregation Council President ____________________________________________________

Concordia’s New Pastor Douglas David Barclay
A recent seminary graduate, Douglas Barclay holds a Master
of Divinity degree, awarded with honors, from the Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and is a recipient of the
ELCA Fund for Leaders Scholarship. In his final year of
studies, he held the position of Coordinator for Mission at St.
Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington, DE where he had
also served as a field-education student. As Coordinator for
Mission, while preaching and teaching, he worked to create and further connections between the
congregation and its neighborhood, including young adult ministry, feeding programs, social
media, and outreach to Spanish-speaking peoples. Douglas is a member of Proclaim, the
professional community for Lutheran pastors, rostered lay leaders, candidates, and seminarians
who publicly identify as LGBTQ. Douglas completed a summer residency of Clinical Pastoral
Education at Penn Hospital in Philadelphia, a level one trauma center. Douglas cares deeply
about social justice, advocacy, community and creating strong resilient congregational
partnerships. His ministry emphasizes the transformative and healing power of the liturgical arts
and music. He served as vicar at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Arlington, MA., a first ring suburb
of Boston. His internship project worked with other faith leaders to focus and build an
ecumenical coalition of partners to address food insecurity through the Town of Arlington’s
food pantry and to build supportive advocacy partners with town government and churches.
Douglas was trained in and led Godly Play, a Montessori based method of Christian learning to
help children and young people to explore their faith through story. Douglas served during his
internship year on the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue of New England. Douglas holds a
Graduate Certificate in Liturgical Studies from Washington Theological Seminary in
Washington, DC. and a B.A. in Music from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. Trained as
a pianist, organist and choir director, Douglas most recently served as Director of Music at
University Lutheran Church in Philadelphia and Interim Director of Music at Christ Lutheran
Church at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD. Prior to this, he was the Minister of Worship at
the historic Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Baltimore, MD, where he served as full time musician
and liturgist for nearly a decade. During his tenure there, he also served as Chapel Musician at
St. Mary's Seminary and University, the first Roman Catholic seminary established in the
United States. Douglas was born in Williamsport, PA and baptized at Messiah Lutheran
Church. He moved with his family to DuBois, PA during his middle high school years and was
confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. At the age of 14, he began to play the organ for a small
rural Methodist church and would occasionally “ride the circuit” with the local Lutheran pastors
who led five small congregations outside of DuBois. Douglas is an Eagle Scout, however, he
struggles to tie knots and to start campfires. His mother, Linda, lives in Jersey Shore, PA. His
father, Ted, died after a long struggle with Prostate Cancer in 2013. He has an older brother,
Keith, and an older sister, Kimberly. He has five grown nephews and one niece.
Treasurer Comments on the May Financial Report
Earlier this month, I spent two days in Springfield at the Synod annual assembly. For those who haven’t had the
opportunity to attend, here are some tidbits. The theme of the convocation was Caution: Holy Experiment in Progress.
Interspersed with business there were taped interviews with church representatives who are trying innovative solutions
to church growth and support. The New England Synod encourages all its churches to be innovative and be
experimental.
With your name badge came two slips of paper, one red and one green. These are used for voting: green in favor; red
opposed. This being and off year there were no big elections being held, just minor business. Friday was the business
meeting. Each conference sat at their own group of tables. For some it was old home week. I, of course, was the new kid
on the block.
Things you should know. 2017 will mark the 500th year of the reformation. Be prepared to sing A Mighty Fortress Is Our
God written by Martin Luther. A lot.
In 2014, the New England Synod collected $468,816 for World Hunger Relief, making New England 8th out of the 65
synods. This is a $133,568 increase over the last year. To be fair $100,000 came from one person. Concordia’s share of
that is $2,370.
Envelope offering was 964% (YTD 106%) of budget and the Stretch was 2% (YTD 14%) for a combined YTD of 91%. Thank
you to everyone who contributed. You also contributed $105.00 to World Hunger Relief and $450.00 for Nepal
earthquake relief.
If you have questions about the May statement, please ask or email at [email protected].
Respectfully submitted, Stephen Perkins, Treasurer

Dear Friends in Christ,
It is with some sadness that we report to you that Heather Adams has submitted her resignation as Director of
Concordia Nursery School effective July 6th. Heather has accepted a full time position with the Manchester
Board of Education. We will greatly miss her and her devotion to her students and their families. We thank her
for the many improvements she brought to the school and to the curriculum. We also appreciate the work
involved in obtaining accreditation and maintaining such a good reputation for Concordia in the community.
We know this is due in great part to Heather’s leadership.
We have begun the process of searching for a new director and hope there will be only a short gap in leadership
transition.
We are happy for Heather and wish her well. We hope Manchester knows how lucky they are. Please keep
Heather and the Nursery School in your prayers.
Peace,
Jan Salvatore for Mutual Ministry

Concordia Lutheran Church 40 Pitkin Street Manchester CT 06040 Attn: Jan Salvatore, Chairperson and Members of Mutual Ministry Committee Dear Jan and Members of Mutual Ministry: I write this letter with a heavy heart to notify you of my resignation as Director of Concordia Nursery School. It is time for me to move on and therefore, will not be renewing my contract for the 2015-2016 school year. Being a part of CNS has brought me great joy over the last nine years. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with young children and their families and an amazing staff. I would also like to thank the Church and the Nursery School Board for the opportunity to further my education to take on the role as Head Teacher and then Director. If there is anything I can do to ensure a smooth transition, please let me know. I would also be happy to serve on the Nursery School Board to continue to support such a wonderful and important program. Thank you again for such a great opportunity.
Sincerely yours, Heather Adams
Concordians of the Year 2015 Twenty-eight years ago, the tradition of celebrating
Concordia’s Name Day on the third Sunday of June began.
Name Day also commemorates the Presentation of the
Augsburg Confession making it a perfect opportunity to
celebrate our name’s promise, that of “concord” and
harmony. We give thanks for God’s goodness to us in the
past, to pray for our future, and to recognize those who
model the best of Concordia’s goals and dreams.
Each year on Name Day we name a “Concordian of the
Year,” a person or persons who have demonstrated
exemplary service to the congregation over a long period of
time, or for a particularly remarkable event in our life
together.
Those whom we name “Concordian of the Year” are, to a person or persons, who are giving, generous and kind.
They do what they do because that is who God has called them to be. This year’s recipients are no exception.
One of the recipients is a lifelong member, who as a member of the Concordia choir for almost four decades
blessed us with the gift God gave her. This person also served on the Worship and Music Committee, provided
their decorating expertise to “Rebuilding God’s House” and faithfully served on the counting team for
numerous years.
The other recipient, who was fortunate enough to have married our other honoree almost 55 years ago, has
shown and demonstrated leadership by serving on Congregation Council and chairing the Property Committee
for several years. This person has served as an advocate for Concordia with the Town of Manchester on one
occasion to make sure our crumbling street-side sidewalks repaired.
We know one of our Concordians has been at work when we arrive at church after a winter snowstorm, or in the
case of New England, the fall as well, to a cleared driveway and parking lot. At the request of former
Concordia Pastor Burt Strand, this individual took on the task of, and continues to this day four decades later, of
assisting in mowing Concordia’s lawn and I’ve heard he’s was pretty good at totally overhauling the equipment
to make sure the job got done.
Our Concordians are faithful stewards of gifts God has given, contributing generously to our shared life in many
ways too numerous to mention with their time, talents and treasure.
In gratitude for a lifetime of hard work, generosity, and faithfulness, we are delighted to name Karen and
George Beauregard “Concordians of the Year.”
Additional Congratulations and corrections

Need a Lift? Would you prefer to come to church on Sunday, but are unable to because
you need a ride? If so, let us know and we'd be glad to arrange one for you.
There are many members who live nearby that would be glad to give you
lift, it's merely a matter of reaching out to us.
We'll be glad to come and collect you and also drop you right back home
after church. Never think it's an imposition or a bother of any kind. Just having you join us makes the whole
thing worthwhile! It doesn't matter if you need one every single week, or if it happens that your car is in the
shop and you're temporarily without wheels. No matter, we'll be glad to give you a lift.
Please contact the church office at (860) 649-5311 and leave your contact information. I'll be sure to get back to
you and arrange the details accordingly.

We are planning our next Stewardship program for this fall and we’re seeking anyone interested in helping us
out this year. We’re planning to meet with members of Emanuel and Faith Lutheran later this year to share
some ideas and see where we might agree on a program and an approach. When we share the work of the Lord
with others there’s no telling what we can achieve.
Contrary to popular myth, you DO NOT have to give a temple talk if you join the committee. You also don’t
even need to “officially” join; you can simply sit in and work on whatever aspects you feel comfortable with.
It’s always helpful to have people to help write, edit, or proofread letters and bulletin inserts; we could always
use artists to help make posters announcing our events, or just simply being with us and sharing your views.
We plan to review some material Nancy obtained from this year’s Synod Assembly, plus set up some time with
our new pastor, once he has settled in to obtain his thoughts, direction, and guidance. It’s an exciting time at
Concordia! Please stay tuned for more information on meetings. If you’re so inclined, feel free to let us know
beforehand if you’re interested. Everyone is welcome!
God’s Peace Be with You!

A Message From Mark Winzler
Concordia Friends,
As Carol announced at Concordia's annual meeting, Bishop
Hazelwood surprised me at Synod Assembly by presenting me with
the "Soli Deo Gloria Award". This award is given to layperson who
have devoted lengthy service to the New England Synod. The award
was voted (secretly) by the Synod Council. It is humbling to receive
as it has not been given out in about a decade.
Knowing that outside of Stephen and Nancy Lyn, no friends or fellow
Concordians were there and with a number of you asking me about it
and what took place, the tech person sent me the attached file to share
with others. It is the clip of the presentation of the recognition.
I hope you don't mind me sharing with you, but, as you know, you, my
Concordia friends, are so important to me in my life.
You will need to download this (see below) and save to your desktop (or somewhere) in order to view. It was
too large to attach to an e-mail. Download
