We have a duty to our people, our community,and our country to elect the best persons that will work for our in-terests.

President Barack Obama has proven himself as a leader who cares forall Americans. He was our hope for change at a time when our nation was engaged in twocostly wars and in a downhill economic slide toward a Great Depression second only to theGreat Depression of 1928. Imagine what would have happened in Michigan if we had “allowedDetroit to go bankrupt.” This is the course of action that Mitt Romney proposed. Imagine whatwould have happened if the majority of our banks and insurance institutions had of closedtheir doors during the crisis. Imagine had we not passed a stimulus package to bring imme-diate job opportunities to stop the tumble downward. Can we really expect that Barack Obamaand his administration completely save our nation from economic ruin in his first term of of-fice?

I thank God that we survived the Great Recession and that the economy is improving. I give

thanks that we are closer to being a nation at peace again and that we will soon see gas andenergy prices come down so that business and job opportunities can begin to grow again. Iam delighted by all of the focus on the “job creators being encouraged” to bring jobs back toAmerica rather than shipping them off to China, India, Thailand, Mexico, Poland, Vietnam,Czechoslovakia and other nations that exploit their workers with low wages, long hours, fewbenefits and practice child labor. Help bring these jobs home, Mr. President! Put America backto work! We are all in need of the “Hope and Change” you promised. I believe the His-panic/Latino Community are with you! Our voices will be heard and our votes will count!

Will you stand up and make a difference on Nov. 6th?

A record 24 million Latinos are eligible to vote in the 2012 presi-dential election, finds the Pew Hispanic Center in a study analyzingCensus Bureau data released October 1. This is up by more than 4million, or 22%, since 2008, when 19.5 million Latinos were eligibleto vote. With rapid population growth, Latinos today are also agreater share of the nation’s 215 million eligible voters—11.0% thisyear, up from 9.5% in 2008 and 8.2% in 2004.

However, the turnout rate of eligible Latino voters historically lagsthat of whites and blacks by substantial margins. To make ourvoice count, voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts will bekey.

Let’s get out the vote raza! We can make a difference in this elec-tion!

Un récord de 24 millones de latinos que son elegibles para votar enla elección presidencial de 2012, se encuentra el Centro HispanoPew en un estudio que analiza datos de la Oficina del Censo libera-dos 1 de octubre. Esto representa un aumento de más de 4 mil-lones de dólares, o el 22%, desde 2008, cuando 19,5 millones eranlatinos elegibles para votar. Con el crecimiento acelerado de lapoblación, los latinos hoy son también una parte mayor de 215 mil-lones elegibles de la nación votantes-un 11,0% este año, un au-mento del 9,5% en 2008 y 8,2% en 2004.

LA OPINION ENDORSES PRESIDENT OBAMAHay que reelegir a Obama

Ahora que se aproxima el 6 de noviembre, no hay una opción más clara para los votantes his-panos que volver a elegir al presidente Barack Obama.

La comparación entre Obama y el candidato Republicano, Mitt Romney, muestra un gran contrasteideológico sobre cual debe ser el rumbo de Estados Unidos. Son dos visiones distintas en loeconómico y en lo social. La del presidente es inclusiva, mira para adelante, promueve un crec-imiento sin dejar rezagados. La del ex gobernador es divisiva, sus propuestas son las mismas hanllevado a la gigantesca disparidad de riqueza.

Durante su primer período, Obama trabajó duro en todos los frentes. Se esforzó por unir a unanación al borde del colapso financiero desencadenado por la crisis hipotecaria y de ejecuciones ju-diciales. Obama también cumplió sus promesas clave: retiró y trajo a casa las tropas esta-dounidenses de Irak y consiguió terminar con Osama Bin Laden, responsable de haber maquinadolos ataques del 11 de septiembre.

A pesar de la fuerte oposición, el presidente logró aprobar una ley sobre la atención médica queextiende los beneficios a muchas personas de nuestra comunidad. Por la Ley de Atención MédicaAsequible (ACA) u "Obamacare", ahora nueve millones de latinos tienen beneficios médicos,quienes hasta el presente no tenían ningún tipo de cobertura médica. Esta medida que tiene unimpacto clave en la comunidad que sufre el índice más alto de falta de cobertura médica del país.

En el tema médico, también hay una gran diferencia entre los dos candidatos en cuanto a la saludreproductiva de la mujer. Con Romney ellas corren el riesgo de perder el acceso servicios impor-tantes en su seguro médico provisto por el trabajo, como a la opción de decidir sobre su cuerpo ysalud.

El índice de desempleo entre los hispanos continúa siendo superior al promedio nacional. Pero hadescendido a 10.3% en comparación con más del 13% registrado en el año 2008. Obama ha dadopasos fundamentales, como invertir 500 millones de dólares en programas de capacitación labo-ral en los centros universitarios comunitarios a fin de ayudar a los latinos a tener acceso amejores empleos.

El presidente reconoce las necesidades de nuestra comunidad y la excelencia de los hijos e hijasque hemos contribuido a este país. El nombramiento histórico de la jueza Sonia Sotomayor a laSuprema Corte es el ejemplo más claro.

Obama se merece un segundo período. Pagaremos un precio muy alto si no le damos nuestrovoto.

En 2008, la gran mayoría de los hispanos dio su apoyo al senador Obama para que se convirtieraen presidente. Mucho de este apoyo se basaba en la promesa de que lograría una reforma migra-toria significativa y humanitaria. Hemos sentido una gran desilusión por esta promesa incumplida.Pero también reconocemos que los republicanos hicieron de todo, menos ayudar a resolver estasituación. Y continuamos creyendo que esta reforma tiene mayor probabilidad de ocurrir bajo lapresidencia de Obama que la administración de Romney.

La mayor desilusión fue en la inmigración. La ambiciosa promesa de tener una reforma integral enel primer año chocó primero con la emergencia económica y después con las realidades políticasdel Congreso. Lo injustificable es la improvisada implementación del gobierno federal del pro-grama Comunidades Seguras que desvirtuó el principio original de seguridad pública. En lo buenotambién contar con la reciente decisión de Acción Diferida que da al menos un tranquilidad a mil-lones de jóvenes.

Aquí el resultado es mixto en el mejor de casos, pero la alternativa de Romney es la autode-portación, y las leyes estatales como las de Arizona, en que el indocumentado es visto un peligroen vez de un aporte.

Más allá de toda la experiencia empresarial que contribuiría para encarrilar la economía, Romneyha dicho entre poco y nada sobre el impacto de los inmigrantes como una diferencia positiva parael crecimiento de nuestro país. Esto, considerando la Alianza para una Nueva Economía Esta-dounidense que enfatiza la aprobación de una media de legalización, como la Ley DREAM, con-tribuiría con 329 mil millones de dólares a la economía nacional.

La dura realidad es que Romney no ha trabajado para ganarse la confianza de los latinos. Siquedara a criterio de Romney, la jueza Sotomayor no sería parte de la Suprema Corte. El can-didato republicano ha dicho que de haber tenido la oportunidad, habría votado en contra de sunombramiento.

Dado que ni este candidato ni su campaña ni el partido han intentado conectar con los hispanos,no podemos dejar de preguntarnos si bajo su presidencia los temas de los latinos quedarían rele-gados a un cajón en la Casa Blanca.

Finalmente, creemos que la visión de presidente es realista y está bien sustentada. Por ejemplo,en la la necesidad de tener una industria de manufactura del siglo 21 que provea buenos em-pleos. Que el déficit fiscal se enfrente con una combinación de recortes de gastos y aumento deimpuesto y que el déficit de infraestructura humana y material se combate con inversiones en ed-ucación y en proyectos. Es importante enfrentar la deuda, pero aun más es fortalecer la economíaa través del estímulo de a demanda.

El país, considerando toda su diversidad y disparidad económica, necesita un comandante en jefeque sea el presidente de todos. Necesitamos un presidente que muestre coherencia y que hagafrente a los temas más difíciles.

Obama tiene el talento, la visión y la experiencia que augura cosas buenas no solo para los latinossino también para el futuro de nuestro país.

Division recently to engage the community and network amongthe many business partners present. The business-centered event also providedan opportunity to formally announce a change of leadership as the current Execu-tive Director of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber (WMHCC) stepped down fromthe position. Veronica Ramirez-Garcia was officially installed as the new ExecutiveDirector for the group.

According to a spokesperson for the group, Jorge Gonzalez, Veronica Ramirez-Gar-cia was born in Mexico City and raised in Holland, Michigan, where she attendedHigh School. After graduating from Western Michigan University, she accepted anentry level accounting position in a Non-profit organization and thereafter a payrollanalyst position at Universal Forest Products. In October of 2011, Veronica joinedthe Michigan-based Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC),where she fulfilled her passion for the Latino business community by serving as aBilingual Business Consultant. In this capacity, she advised Latino business ownersand entrepreneurs on securing capital, on developing financial forecasts, and ongrowing their business. She is an active volunteer in various organizations and en-joys spending quality time with family and friends.

(HOLLAND, Mich.) — The Michelin Soccer Program and Holland Tire Center donatedmore than $1,800 in both funds and equipment to local youth soccer organizations. TheHolland Recreation Division got $900 and United Soccer Athletes (USA) Soccer Club re-ceived $900. These funds go a long way in helping to provide scholarships, uniformsand other soccer essentials for the participating leagues. Giving back to the communityis a top priority for Michelin.

The Michelin Soccer Program partners tire dealers with local youth soccer organizations,providing the dealers the opportunity to reach out to the community. The leagues inturn receive funds and equipment. The soccer leagues are sent certificates that can beredeemed at the dealer’s store for a free soccer ball during a 30-day promotional period,while supplies last. After a 60-day tire rebate promotion included on the certificate,Michelin donates $2 to the soccer organization for each tire sold during the program.

“Michelin really believes in youth and making sure they are safe and healthy,” said DonByrd, vice president of Marketing for Michelin Americas Small Tires. “This program is theperfect partnership of all those elements. We look forward to continuing to grow and do-nate even more equipment and funds in 2013.

Latinos in New YorkState to Vote in

SpanishHispanic voters in New York's Rockland and Ulster counties will haveaccess to assistance and electoral materials in Spanish for the Nov. 6elections, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said last October.

With the new agreement, which comes after a similar one was reachedwith Schenectady County, the AG's office intends to ensure that Span-ish-speaking voters have the same access to the political process asEnglish-speakers and do not encounter linguistic barriers on electionday.

"The minority language provisions of the Voting Rights Act provide nec-essary safeguards and impose important requirements that are de-signed to ensure that all voters and prospective voters have access tothe ballot box, regardless of their level of English proficiency," he said.

In August, the state AG's office reminded 10 counties that they had tocomply with Section 4(e) of the Voting Rights Act, which demands thatcertain voters with limited English speaking ability be provided withbilingual ballots.

Census data show that approximately 5.5 million New York state resi-dents do not speak English as their first language, of whom 2.7 millionare Spanish-speakers.

Latinos are a key featureof the American politicallandscape, and their popu-lation is growing. Latinosnow comprise 28 percentof Chicago’s population,up from 14 percent in1980. They comprise 16percent of the state’s pop-ulation, up from 12 per-cent in the last 10 years.

This rapid growth hasbeen fueled equally by im-migration and the naturalincrease of births exceeding deaths.

Latinos are a relatively young population, a fact ofgreat significance to their future political strength.Ninety-three percent of Latinos younger than 18are U.S. citizens, compared with 62 percent ofadults. Thus the passage of time will bring moreLatino citizens into the voting booth. Already inChicago, one in five citizens of voting age is Latino.

What is the likelyimpact of thisLatino boom onthe 2012 elec-tion? On the cam-paign trail, itsimportance al-ready has beenseen as the presi-dential candi-dates and partieswork to court theLatino vote.

In 2008, morethan two out of

three Latinos voted for Barack Obama. Given cur-rent demographics and the 2010 reapportionmentof electoral votes to states that traditionally voteRepublican, if the turnout rates and party prefer-ences are the same this year, Latino voters will be amajor cause of an Obama win. In particular, theLatino vote could put Obama over the top in thetoss-up states of Florida, Georgia and North Car-olina. It also makes Colorado too close to call.

But if the inexorable increase inLatino voters helps Democrats,why did Republicans make suchimpressive gains in the 2010 con-gressional and statewide elections?

Off-year elections are very different thanpresidential elections, especially in terms ofvoter turnout.

For white voters, the typical turnout rate forpresidential elections is about 25 percentgreater than their mid-term voter rate. But forminority voters, presidential election turnoutusually runs about 35 percent greater thanmid-term election turnout. Thus, the 2010electorate was smaller and whiter than in2008, and this favored the GOP.

The turnout rates of different racial and eth-nic groups will be crucial to the outcome of the2012 presidential race. If voters’ partisan prefer-ences by race and ethnicity are the same as in2008, analysis shows that even with turnout ratesat the 2010 level, the Latino vote will help Obamawin re-election, though by a smaller margin.

Under the 2008 conditions, the Republican vote in2012 would be much stronger in Colorado, whichwould give Mitt Romney a likely win there. Georgiawould become a statistical tie. And the Latino votewould help Obama win in North Carolina andFlorida and, thereby, win re-election.

And certainly 2012 will not be the last election inwhich this risingethnic grouphas a large influ-ence. The Latinovote is a signifi-cant determi-nant in nationalelectoral out-comes, as wellas those inmany states andlocalities. Theoutcome of the2012 presiden-tial election verywell may be de-cided by Latinovoters. Candi-dates who ignore this fact of political and social lifedo so at their peril.

MURAL PARA HONRAR LABORDE BRACEROS

EN TEXAS

Tras meses de elaboración, un mural enhonor a los Braceros mexicanos luce en losmuros del modesto edificio de la alberca mu-nicipal en la comunidad de San Juan, en elValle del Río Grande y constituye ahora elúnico tributo visual que existe en Texas paralos migrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidosde 1942 a 1964.

En el corazón de este pueblo en el sur del es-tado, la gente puede mirar diariamente loque significó el éxodo de jornaleros mexi-canos, a través de las imágenes pintadas enlas paredes de la pequeña instalación, ubi-cada justo detrás de la Basílica del SantuarioNacional de Nuestra Señora de San Juan delValle.

El artista Raúl Valdez, ayudado por miem-bros de la comunidad, maestros y estudi-antes, plasmó la vida de los braceros quevivieron condiciones laborales extremas, quefueron sometidos a la fumigación corporalpara entrar a Estados Unidos y se les obligóal uso de herramientas como el azadón demango corto, el cual está actualmente pro-hibido para labores agrícolas.

Se trabajó en el mural desde abril hasta finesde junio de este año y hace un par de mesesse inauguró oficialmente con una cele-bración popular en este poblado localizado aunas millas de la frontera con México.

Es un orgullo ver el proyecto terminado conel apoyo de la comunidad y como una cele-bración a los braceros que contribuyerontanto a la riqueza de esta región y del país”,señaló la doctora Stephanie Alvarez, coordi-nadora de la iniciativa y directora del pro-grama de Estudios Mexicano-Americanos dela Universidad de Texas Pan-American(UTPA).

Los estudiantes de la doctora Alvarez en elcentro de Estudios Mexicano-Americanos(MAS, por sus siglas del inglés) tuvieron laidea de realizar un mural con el motivo delbracerismo y también inspirados por la tradi-ción del muralismo como una forma artísticapara plasmar hechos de la historia de Méx-ico, en este caso el trabajo de millones demexicanos en los campos, fábricas y con-strucción en Estados Unidos durante 22años.

El programa Bracero trajo amillones de mexicanos a la-bores del campo, manufactura,construcción y servicios de1942 a 1964 y ha sido elmayor programa de traba-jadores extranjeros temporalesen la historia de EstadosUnidos.

Months of preparation, amural honoring the MexicanBraceros looks on the walls ofthe modest building of the mu-nicipal pool in the communityof San Juan, in the Rio GrandeValley and is now the only vi-sual tribute that exists in Texasfor Immigrants to the UnitedStates from 1942 to 1964.

At the heart of this village inthe south of the state, peoplecan watch daily which meantthe exodus of Mexican laborers, through theimages painted on the walls of the small fa-cility, located just behind the Basilica of theNational Shrine Our Lady of San Juan delValle.

The artist Raul Valdez, helped by communitymembers, teachers and students, capturedthe lives of the laborers who lived extreme

working conditions, they were subjected tobody spray to enter the United States andforced to use tools like short-handled hoe,which is currently banned for farming.

We worked on the mural from April throughJune of this year and a couple months agowas officially opened with a popular celebra-tion in this town located a few miles from theborder with Mexico.

The mural shows central figure of peasantgiant hands and a farm worker leaning veg-etable crop in the grooves with a short hoe,wearing his characteristic hat. Also see im-ages of fumigation that U.S. authorities did arow of naked migrants as a requirement foradmission to the country. A locomotive andvarious symbols of Mexico's indigenous past.


The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico can be traced back to its indigenous pagan cultures.Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors had been observed by these civilizations perhaps for aslong as 2,500–3,000 years. In the pre-Hispanic era, skulls were commonly kept as trophies anddisplayed during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.La celebración de El Día de los Muertos en México se remontan a las culturas paganas indíge-nas. Mexican diver Paola Espinosa, a medalist in theLondon Olympics, urged lawmakers to do moreto ensure the nation no longer leads the worldin childhood obesity.

"Pass laws that promote programs so we're nolonger No. 1 in childhood obesity," Espinosasaid in a ceremony at the lower house of Con-gress to honor 2012 Olympic and Paralympicmedalists.

Obesity currently affects 29 percent of Mexicanboys and girls between five and 11, 30 percentof children aged 12-19 and seven of 10 adults,according to the Health Secretariat.

Also attending the ceremony were divers IvanGarcia, German Sanchez and Laura Sanchez andarcher Aida Roman, as well as 10 Paralympicathletes.

Espinosa and partner Alejandra Orozco won asilver medal in the synchronized 10m platformat the London Games.

Comentó que los deportistas de hoy representanuna nueva generación que no se da por venciday está "al tú por tú" con los mejores del mundo,preparadas física y mentalmente para superarretos y poner el nombre de México muy alto.

Original recipe makes 1(12 pound) turkey

Ingredients:1 (12 pound) whole turkey6 tablespoons butter, di-vided4 cups warm water3 tablespoons chickenbouillon2 tablespoons dried parsley2 tablespoons dried mincedonion2 tablespoons seasoningsalt

Directions

1 Preheat oven to 350 de-grees F (175 degrees C).Rinse and wash turkey. Dis-card the giblets, or add topan if they are anyone's fa-vorites.

2 Place turkey in a Dutchoven or roasting pan. Sepa-rate the skin over thebreast to make little pock-ets. Put 3 tablespoons ofthe butter on both sides be-tween the skin and breastmeat. This makes for veryjuicy breast meat.

3 In a medium bowl, com-bine the water with thebouillon. Sprinkle in theparsley and minced onion.Pour over the top of theturkey. Sprinkle seasoningsalt over the turkey.

4 Cover with foil, and bakein the preheated oven 3 1/2to 4 hours, until the inter-nal temperature of theturkey reaches 180 degreesF (80 degrees C). For thelast 45 minutes or so, re-move the foil so the turkeywill brown nicely.
