As pain re- lieving medications continue to show damaging effects to the body, CryoTherapy has grown a strong following for its ability to utilize cold tem- peratures to promote a natural anti-inflammatory response and reduction in pain. Healthcare professionals have been prescribing the ap- plication of cold/ice to treat pain and inflammation for centuries. In the late 1970’s, while researching the benefits of ice for rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Yamaguchi founded the cryogenic chamber. If you are, or will be, acaregiver for elderly parentsor another close family mem-ber living with Alzheimer’sdisease, you may experiencesome emotional stress–butyou also need to be aware ofthe financial issues involvedand what actions you can taketo help address them.

You will find few “off therack” solutions for dealingwith the financial challengesassociated with Alzheimer’s.For one thing, family situa-tions can vary greatly, both interms of the financial re-sources available and in theavailability and capabilitiesof potential caregivers. Fur-thermore, depending on thestage of the disease, peopleliving with Alzheimer’s mayhave a range of cognitiveabilities, which will affect thelevel of care needed.

Here are some general sug-gestions that may be useful toyou in your role as caregiver:

Consult with family mem-bers and close friends. It’s

extremely hard to be a solocaregiver. By consulting withother family members orclose friends, you may findthat some of them have thetime and ability to help.

Consider obtainingdurable power of attorney. If you possess a durablepower of attorney for fi-nances, you can make finan-cial decisions for the personwith Alzheimer’s when he orshe is no longer able. Withthis authority, you can helpthe individual living with thedisease–and your entire fam-ily–avoid court actions thatcan take away control of fi-nancial affairs. And on ashort-term basis, havingdurable power of attorney canhelp you take additional stepsif needed. You’ll find it mucheasier to acquire durablepower of attorney when theindividual living withAlzheimer’s is still in theearly stage of the disease andcan willingly and knowinglygrant you this authority.

Gather all necessary doc-uments. You’ll be in a betterposition to help the individualliving with Alzheimer’s if

you have all the important fi-nancial documents–bankstatements, insurance poli-cies, wills, Social Securitypayment information, deeds, etc.–in one place.

Get professional help. Youmay want to consult with anattorney, who can advise youon establishing appropriatearrangements, such as a liv-ing trust, which provides in-structions about the estate ofthe person for whom you’reproviding care and names a

trustee to hold title to prop-erty and funds for the benefi-ciaries. You also might wantto meet with a financial advi-sor, who can help identify po-tential resources andmoney-saving services. Anda tax professional may beable to help you find tax de-ductions connected to yourrole as caregiver.

Finally, use your experi-ence as a caregiver to re-minder yourself of theimportance of planning for

your own needs. For exam-ple, a financial professionalcan suggest ways of prepar-ing for the potentially hugecosts of long-term care, suchas those arising from an ex-tended stay in a nursinghome.

Caring for an individual liv-ing with Alzheimer’s has itschallenges. But by taking theappropriate steps, you can re-duce uncertainties–and possi-bly give yourself and yourfamily members a greatersense of security and control.

step into a full-body chamberwith your head being the onlybody part not submerged.Gloves, socks, slippers, and arobe are provided to wear.Your body is then exposed toextreme cold temperatures. The freezing conditions in-duce narrowing of blood ves-sels, reducing inflammation.Upon exiting the CryoTher-apy chamber the body returnsto normal temperature, theblood vessels will dilate, blood supply is returned tothe extremities devoid of tox-ins and enriched with nutri-ents, anti-inflammatoryproteins, endorphins and oxy-gen. The body’s response re-duces pain, decreases

inflammation, numbs nerves, and decreases muscle sore-ness.

From the Howard-Suamico School Board

Howard-Suamico School Board Linkages“Future Public Education will require involvement and collaboration among various local, civic, private and non-profit entities, a concept I like to refer as community entrepreneurship.” Donald Bren

One of the functions of theHoward-Suamico SchoolBoard is to receive inputfrom the community to en-sure that our students havethe skills and knowledge tosucceed in a changing world.

To receive this input, wehave linkage meetings withclergy/civic community or-ganizations, local businesses,post-secondary education in-stitutions and our local statelegislators on a yearly basis.

Policies that may hinder orpromote family interactionswithin the district, how mightthe district provide additionalfamily support outside of theschool day, and how can thedistrict communicate moreeffectively with families, aretopics discussed with the rep-

resentative from our localclergy/civic community or-ganizations such as youthsports groups, the YMCA,youth church groups, theDNR, and Family Services.

During our linkage withlocal businesses, we focus onskills required for entry-levelpositions, significant chal-lenges facing the job markettoday, and how can ourschool district effectivelypartner with local businessesto ensure that we are prepar-ing our students with suc-cessful personal andbusiness-related skills, suchas communication, criticalthinking and problem-solv-ing.

With most of our Bay Portstudents planning on post-

secondary education, ourcommunication with suchschools as NWTC, BellinCollege of Nursing, St Nor-bert College, RasmussenCollege, and UW-Green Bayprovides insight for the areasof academic preparation, so-cial and academic challengesfor the first year student, andcareer trends in education.

In meeting with our localstate legislators, we havetaken the time to thank themfor their efforts in support ofpublic education and sharewith them our thoughts re-garding the school fundingformula issue.

Legislators, businesses, parents, and school boardsmust work together tostrengthen the bridges of

public education for all stu-dents in Wisconsin.

A new design forthe NortheasternWisconsinVeterans Memorial

For several years there havebeen plans to build a veteransmemorial in the Village ofHoward. On Wednesday, anew design concept put thatplanning into high gear.

The plan is to build a me-morial on two acres of land atHoward’s Memorial Park. This specific memorial wouldhonor veterans from 17 dif-ferent Wisconsin counties.

On Wednesday, BrandonBauer, an associate professorof art at St. Norbert College, presented a revamped designconcept to the NortheasternWisconsin Veterans Memo-rial Fundraising Cabinet.

Bauer’s proposal took theoriginal concept, which was avery linear design, and madeit more interactive and educa-tional.

Bauer’s design includes acentral monument, a reflect-ing pool, an education center,an open-air amphitheater, aneternal flame, a nature obser-vation deck, a gazebo andseveral individual conflictmemorial sites interspersedthroughout the park. Thoseindividual conflict memorialsites would each be devotedto a specific war, like, sayWorld War II. Each sitewould have informationabout that specific war, suchas the names of the Wiscon-

sin service members who losttheir lives in that conflict.

Of his concept Bauer said,he thought about “really mak-ing this a destination,” mean-ing he wanted to incorporateas many elements as possibleto draw in visitors and to givethose visitors a good, educa-tional experience.

At this point, the memorialis still in the early planningphase. So, it’s unclear whatthe ultimate cost could be.However, the NortheasternWisconsin Veterans Boardhad previously set a fundrais-ing goal of a little more thanone million dollars. To dateabout $170,000 has beenraised. The board is acceptinga mix of public money andprivate donations and spon-sorships to bring the memo-rial to life. Board memberssay they will also seek outgrants to help with funding.

The next steps in theprocess are for the full boardto review Bauer’s conceptand for the Village ofHoward’s engineering depart-ment to come up with a roughestimate of the cost of thatconcept.

For more information andto find out how you can do-nate, you can visit the memo-rial’s websitewww.newivetmemorial.org.
