THE COMMUNITY CHURCH HEWS Vol. 1 Friday, February 9 S T O W , O H I O No. 3 MINISTERS COLUMN The Church asks for a minister that can draw, not pictures on the slate or on the blackboard, but draw people to the Church. In some measure the Church is justi- fied in its demand. The public, however, is justi- fied in making the same demand on the Church. This is a rule that works both ways. The Church becomes a mighty agency for good in any community, when it de- velops this one grace, the grace of winning folk for their Church. Think a minute and you will discern that you like to drive to a certain gas station, or shop at a certain store, or patronize a cer- tain merchant, and why? Because you feel a little more comfortable, ycu are pleased with your treat- ment at the one place and a little vncamfortable at the other place. The human element is a large factor in Church going. People expect the glad hand, a kind word, that little something that wins and touches a responsive chord and just draws us back again. We like some people. Why? They have neither wealth, pres- tiago, position or money. They are comely, no grace or beauty, but. they are strangely likeable. They worm their way into your very heart. It is good to see them coming. You do not weary of their presence. They wear in, not out. A kind word, a hymn book, some little courtesy, an in- quiry over the telephone, a pos- tal card, the expression of inter- est for their welfare, a forgiving spirit, all these embodied in this, "A Christ-like Spirit," the attitude of a true Christian. And that is the chord that will draw and G-od's House will soon be filled. GEORGE M. MINISTERS COLUMN The Church asks for a minister

that can draw, not pictures on the slate or on the blackboard, but draw people to the Church. In some measure the Church is justi-fied in its demand.

The public, however, is justi-fied in making the same demand on the Church. This is a rule that works both ways. The Church becomes a mighty agency for good in any community, when it de-velops this one grace, the grace of winning folk for their Church.

Think a minute and you will discern that you like to drive to a certain gas station, or shop at a certain store, or patronize a cer-tain merchant, and why? Because you feel a little more comfortable, ycu are pleased with your treat-ment at the one place and a little vncamfortable at the other place.

The human element is a large factor in Church going. People expect the glad hand, a kind word, that little something that wins and touches a responsive chord and just draws us back again.

We like some people. Why? They have neither wealth, pres-tiago, position or money. They are comely, no grace or beauty, but. they are strangely likeable. They worm their way into your very heart . It is good to see them coming. You do not weary of their presence. They wear in, not out. A kind word, a hymn book, some little courtesy, an in-quiry over the telephone, a pos-

tal card, the expression of inter-est for their welfare, a forgiving spirit, all these embodied in this, "A Christ-like Spirit," the at t i tude of a t rue Christian. And tha t is the chord tha t will draw and G-od's House will soon be filled.

MEN don't forget to attend the doings Thursday, Feb. 15th, at the home of Mr. C. M. Woodring, Dar-rowville — Come anytime between 7 and 9 P. M. Leave when you get ready.

Mrs. A. M. Butcher, R. 3 Kent is seriously ill—Mrs. Butcher is the mother of Mrs. Cross.

Mr. and Mrs. Dibbon run the Quaint Art Shoppe at Darrowville. Stop and see them sometime.

Several Personal Testimonies were given at the close of the Communion Service last Sunday. Let us all accumulate more Chris-tian experience.

Mr. Bush knows how to keep the Church warm. Wonder whose coal he burns.

The choir still needs bass and tenor voices tho that section did look better last Sunday.

Mr. C. H. Monteith was confined to his home last Sunday and the greater part of this week.

Eloise Zirkle, soprano in our choir, and her fa ther come each week from Kent. Eloise is more successful now in getting her father out to Church than when they lived somewhat nearer.

Thirty one attended the Church S u p p e r last Friday. Several others came in for the business meeting afterwards. A spirited discussion on one or two phases of Church work occupied most of the time. Members were pleased to

see and welcome Mrs. Howard at this meeting.

And on Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bishop were back with us again.

For a day or so last week we were under th© impression that Esther Woodring was married. All a mistake.

Here are some of the birthdays that are being celebrated this week:

Mrs. C. F. DeRusha, Feb. 5th, Probable Age—19 years.

B:b Leonard, Feb. 7th, Prob-able Age—14 years.

Mrs. Virginia Judy, Feb. 9th, Probable Age—40 years.

Speaking of birthdays did you know that Mr. Leiby's earthly father lived to be well over 100 years old.

Mrs. Adeleide Smith — Mrs. Eunn's mother is visting here this week.

Marjorie Valentine is home for a month's vacation with her par-ents. Expect to see her at Church each Sunday.

"Is your wife still your Valen-tine"—If so see Mr. Bauder, Sil-ver Lake Green House and get her one of those interesting pot-tery novelties with, cacti and suc-culents therein—or—if you a re anxious for a change of scenery and would see something pretty, the Hyacinths will be blooming there by the time you read this.

We are enclosing Mr. Bauder's calendar in this issue.

While speaking of flowers let us all plant an extra quantity of them this spring so we can fill tha Church' up each Sunday this summer. Of late, flowers in this church have been conspicuous by their absence, just like some of our old members.

It is also possible that folks when they are sick would like to be remembered with flowers from the Men's Class, the Ladies Class, the C. E. or—from you.

, It is said that Mrs. Sclinee bakes wonderful cookies. When we get sick a few cookies along wi ll the flowers, please.

Our Church secretary, Mrs. Ce-lia F. McColgan, directed the D. rf A. dramtic efforts this last Monday evening. Several of the Church folks attended this pro-duction.

WTliam Shaffer 's class held a business m e e t i n g Wednesday •evening.

February 14th is the beginning of Lenten Season.

How many folks have you in-vited to come to Church this past week?

"L IFE L IGHT" Trouble thrives on attention,

They shrivel and disappear when we ignore them. It is not easy to Ignore them you say? That is so; but it becomes easier If we find something else to t ake their place in our thought. We usually find these substi tutes by looking for them.

If you have trouble, do some-thing for somebody quickly. Turn your attention outside yourself. Loose yourself in thinking of others and you will find your greater self and will lose your trouble. Said Christ: "He that findeth his life shall lose it ; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."

YOUR OWN CHURCH

If you want to work in the kind of a church

Like the kind of a church you like.

You needn' t slip your clothes in a gr ip

And start on a long1, long hike

You'll only find what you left behind

For there is nothing thats really new;

I t ' s a knock at yourself when you knock your church;

It isn' t your church, It 's you.

e Real churches a rn ' t made by nifyi afraid

Lest somebody else goe.s ahead;

When every one works and nobody shirks,

You can raise a church from the dead.

And if while you make your personal stake,

Your neighbor can make one too,

Your church will be what you want to see— ,

It isn't your church, i t ' s you.
