the common thread of depression is the experience of loss without possibility of
recovery. the loss may de physical, as in the case of death of divorce or disease. the
loss may also be psychological as when we feel we have lost our selfrespect or a sense
of trust in another. depression is based upon the belief that some object, person, or
atribute considered essential for our sense of well being is no longer within our reach.
Once depression sets in a vicious cycle develops. The depressing episode affects
adversely the persons image of him/herself. He beings to judge himself negatively as
if the problem situation is and will be characteristic of all future interactions with other
people or with life in general. The individual begins to expect failure, loneliness, or a
continued feeling of inadequacy or inferiority for the rest of his life.
Expecting such negative out comes, she behaves in ways that makes such outcomes
that much more likely. Confronted with continued problems (tipically without an
understanding of how one is actively provoking more of the same), her self-esteem isassaulted even further. This, in turn, makes it even harder to work or relate to others.
As her sense of optimism and self-confidence deteriorate even further, sadness,
apathy, and a sense of helplessness take root. With this, comes a rapid loss of vitality,
energy and desire to live.
Those who suffer from depression talk of a physical sensation of heaviness, lethargy,
and of a inability to get going. Depression can literally knock a person off his feet.
These are real sensations, not imagined or a reflection for someone feeling sorry for
himself.
It is tipically those people who have the highest and most rigid expectations for
themselves and for others that are most prone to depression. frequently, the
expectations are unrealistic and practically impossible to archieve (for instance I
should never get angry or theses no way in the world that she would disappoint
me). When lifes events run contrary to these expectations, (wich usually evolve into
demands), one is then confronted with that depressing sense of loss. Rather than
reevaluate the standards of demands they have, they rigidly defend those standards at
the cost of their emotional health.
Depression requires considerable psychological work. Even if one uses
antidepressants, ones relationship with him/herself and with others needs
modification. At some level, depression is curative. It give us a chance to take stock of
our self and of those with whom we are most intimate. The depression is a painfully
clear reflection of where we have held on too strong and/or stubbornly to an ideal of
ourself, to someone or to something.

autoestima se ve asaltado an ms.
