Embys Showcase
Maybe you’ve heard the name “Embys” mentioned at the Common
Thread meetings. Embys is a contraction taken from the term
“embellishments”, which is used to describe a stitching group that cre-
ates small art quilts, often embellishing along the way. Over the years,
a number of Common Thread ladies have been a part of Embys. At
present, the members are: Judi Maxwell (founder), Heather John, Jane
Emerson, Sharon Erwin, DAnna Lawson, Jacque Backer, and Kathy
Curry.
Embys will show quilts from some of the challenges in the past several
years and you will see how differently each person has approached the
subject of the challenge. It has been a long running group with a fun
atmosphere! We hope that shows in the pieces that are presented.

https://www.kathymcneilquilts.com/ (Kathy McNeil Art Quilts)
When I first opened Kathy McNeil’s quilting page, I thought, “Are those quilts?” The quilts on
her home page look like paintings. They are even framed like paintings. The pieces in each one
(all appliqued) are so small that they seem like brush-strokes, and her colors are luminous in a
way that fabric rarely reflects.
How does she do it? Thankfully, she is not stingy about sharing her techniques. On her website
are links to videos about her “appliquick” applique, her quilting decisions, and the use of pens
and foil for creating designs. She also has a newsletter and offers workshops (on cruise ships!),
but you will want to spend most of your time looking through her galleries at all those painting
-like quilts – of animals, birds, landscapes, and people.
Kathy has reached a level of expertise in which she can charge Master Artist prices for her
quilts, but the good news is: viewing them online is still free!

“Quilts have always had the power of com-
memorating events, whether on a large scale or
individual basis. These are particularly important
to document this significant, historic moment.
They also bring to mind the individual lives that
were lost. They are incredibly powerful for that
reason.” - Carolyn Ducey, International Quilt Study
Center & Museum Curator of Collections
The United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial
Quilt was created by a volunteer-based grass-
roots organization to keep the memories of the
September 11, 2001, victims alive. The quilt
consists of more than 140 individual quilts or
panels, which consist of 25 blocks. Each block is
dedicated to a victim of the attacks. The total
square footage of the quilt is more than 15,500 feet and, if laid end to end, it would cover more than five football fields.
Corey Gammel and Peter Marquez of Long Beach, California, saw Ground Zero first-hand during a trip to New York
City weeks after the attack. Based on this experience, they felt called to do something to help soothe the spiritual wounds
of those affected. After returning home from New York City, they founded United in Memory Memorial Quilt Inc., to
create a memorial quilt that would serve as a lasting tribute similar to The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. They
created a website and appealed to others to help them make the quilts. Blocks came in from across the country and
around the world.
In May 2002, volunteers held workshops to assemble the blocks into panels. A group of about 40 women worked to-
gether that summer to create the panels. Since then, the panels have toured the country extensively.
The IQSCM acquired the collection in September 2015. Since then, a dedicated volunteer team has worked tirelessly to
accession the panels into the collection. To date, more than 100 of the panels have been reviewed and added to the per-
manent collection. The remaining will be completed this fall. As the quilts are photographed and documented, the
IQSCM hopes to learn more about the stories behind the victims
memorialized on each panel.
On account of its large size, only seven of the panels are on dis-
play at Quilt House from August 26 – October 9.

Charitable Efforts
CTQC will continue to collect bags to give to the hospital in
appreciation for the use of the meeting room. Bring any fin-
ished bags to upcoming meetings and they will be delivered to
the correct person.
We will also make stockings for the Parker Task Force. Judi is heading up the Christmas stocking project for the Parker Task Force this
year. The pattern is on the website--please use the larger pattern for this project.
She is requesting that all fabric be “kid friendly” and Christmas themed fabric. For
the cuff, you can use a flat cotton batting, or any contrasting fabric to finish off the
edge of the stocking. CommonThreadQuiltClub.com
