The Command Form

Also known as the Imperative(Das Imperativ)

Commands in German…

• Forming commands in German is similar to forming commands in English

• The speaker uses the infinitive form of a verb, minus “to”

•Go!•Run!•Read!•Write!•etc

There are 4 kinds of commands in German:

1) Du command–command that you use with people you know—when you “command” 1 person

z. B. Max, geh zur Schule! Max, go to school!

2) Ihr command—used when you are telling 2 or more people to do s.th.

z. B. Geht zur Schule, Max und Diana! Max and Diana, go to

school!

The forms continued…3) Sie command—formal command, used

with adults and people you don’t know z. B. Frau Schmidt, gehen Sie (bitte) in die Stadt! Frau Schmidt, (please) go into the city.

4) Wir command—let’s command—used when you make suggestions which include yourself

z. B. Gehen wir morgen ins Kino! Let’s go to the movies tomorrow!

The du command form auf Deutsch

• The du command, or the informal you command, is pretty simple!

• Use the du form of the verb but drop the “-st” Then, add an “!” to the end

of the sentence to clarify that the sentence is a command.– z.B

• Du gehst Geh! Go!• Du schreibst Schreib! Write!

• **Some verbs are irregular, so this “rule” doesn’t apply to every verb…

NOTE!!!• Du commands of verbs that are stem

changing and have vowel changes from ei or eie, will also have a stem change in the command form– z.B – essen du isst Iss! (just drop the t)

– geben du gibst Gib!– lesen du liest Lies!– sehen du siehst Sieh!– sprechen du sprichstSprich!– helfendu hilfst Hilfe!

• If a stem-changing verb takes an umlaut, like fahren, then drop it in the command form:– Du fährst schnell Fahr schneller!– Ihr fahrt schnell Fahrt schneller!– Sie fahren schnellFahren Sie

schneller!– Wir fahren schnell = Fahren wir

The “ihr” command form…

• When you address more than one person, use the “ihr” form of the verb.– z.B

•Kommt zu Peter rüber! Come over to Peter!

•Spielt im Park! Play in the park!• Note: this command form IS the “ihr”

form of a verb, minus the “ihr”Kommt Kommt

The formal Sie command form…

• The formal singular AND plural Sie command

• All you have to do is to switch around the subject and the verb!– z.B

•Sprechen Sie Deutsch, bitte! Please speak German!

•Hören Sie die Musik! Listen to the music!

The ,,wir’’ command form!

• This is used when making suggestions in the sense of “Let’s [do something]…!”—you include yourself in this command

• To form this, basically, switch around the verb and the pronoun, and BAM!, you have your ,,wir’’ command!– z.B

•Gehen wir! Let’s go!•Treffen wir uns vor dem Kino! Let’s

meet in front of the movie theater!

Irregular Verbs

• The verb “sein” has irregular command forms:– Du command= Sei! Sei brav!– Ihr command= Seid! Seid nicht so

dumm!– Sie command= Seien Sie! Seien Sie brav!– Wir command= Seien wir! Seien wir

• Haben is also slightly irregular:– Du command= Hab! Hab ein Stück

Kuchen! – Ihr command= Habt! – Sie command= Haben Sie!– Wir command= Haben wir! Haben wir

noch eine Tasse Kaffee!

Commands with separable prefix verbs…

Same rules apply as before, and you still split the prefix and put it at the end…

z.B. aufmachen

Mach die Geschenke auf! (du command)

Machen Sie die Geschenke auf! (Sie command)

Macht die Geschenke auf! (ihr command)

Machen wir die Geschenke auf! (wir command)

Public/Official command forms

• This is mostly used in legal documents or on official signs at train stations, airports, bus stations, etc.

• These command forms use the infinitive form of the verb.– z.B

• Bitte hier nicht parken! Please don’t park here!• Nicht rauchen! Don’t smoke!• Türen schließen! Close (the) doors!
