When he visited Columbustwo years ago, Justin Ringlereceived a gift that inspired thelatest album by his folk band.
The leader of the Oregongroup Horse Feathers was per-forming a Rumba Cafe gig whena fan approached him with “alittle piece of Ohio culture,” hesaid.
The gift: a book of collectedworks by James Wright, a nativeOhioan.
Wright, who was stronglyaffected by his childhood sur-roundings in the steel-producing town of MartinsFerry, won the 1972 PulitzerPrize for poetry.
“I read it all and became soinfluenced by it that it became amajor component to thatrecord,” said Ringle, 30. “He usesa lot of natural imagery . . . andhas the capability of evoking alot of emotion with the words heuses.”
By channeling those words,Ringle wove reflections of lostlove with images of nature onThistled Spring — the thirdHorse Feathers album.
His melancholy descriptionsof deer feeding on dying grassand rivers being polluted bygasoline coincide with lushmelodies — a change from thehushed second album, HouseWith No Home.
“I don’t think . . . (the newalbum) begs the listener’s atten-tion as much,” Ringle said. “Itjust felt different and had a littlebit more of a lively feel — notquite as restrained.”
He credits the new sound to achange of scenery and member-ship.
He started Horse Feathers in2004 after his move to Portland,Ore., from his native Idaho.Having played in several rockbands while growing up, he
switched to a softer folk soundfor his first major project.
“I got attracted to the inti-macy that you can get with
acoustic instruments,” he said.“It just has a different type offeeling compared to purely elec-tric music.”
Brother and sister Peter andHeather Broderick, a cellist andmulti-instrumentalist, unitedwith Ringle to beef up his acous-
tic sound. After the release of asecond album in 2008, theBrodericks departed — andRingle was searching for bandmates again.
The latest lineup — with vio-linist Nathan Crockett, cellistCatherine Odell and multi-instrumentalist Sam Cooper —recorded Thistled Spring in 2009.
“I kind of started from scratchagain,” Ringle said. “I was work-ing with all new people and hadmoved to a different part ofPortland.”

melodies and chord pro-gressions, he took hisskeletal songs to thestudio to pursue collabo-rations with the newmembers.
The teamwork paid off. After he played a
Spartan piano melody forthe others (“I’m not muchof a piano player,” heacknowledged), they im-provised the rest of theinstrumentation.
The first run-throughbecame the recordedversion of the title track.
“Every song has kind ofits own personality andprocess,” Ringle said. “Itjust depends. But that onesong (Thistled Spring) wasan instance where peoplekind of caught on and itworked.”
He recognizes hisnatural surroundings as amuse.
While the author whoinspired him depicts thebleak industrial landscapeand quiet farmland ofOhio, he pays homage tothe Northwest.
“It’s not hard to be in-fluenced by the geographyand landscape up here —the mountains, trees, forest,” Ringle said. “Ifpeople no longer existedhere, nature would winand it would be forestagain in 10 years.”

How could the howlingvocals of Roger Pruitt nottake a toll on his sensitivepipes?
A regimen helps.“I usually drink a lot of tea
and a lot of honey; that’spretty much it,” said the20-year-old Pruitt, who alsogulps water during liveshows and recordingsessions.
“The drier your throat is,the faster you’ll lose yourvoice.”
A ruckus by the Columbusquintet, whose name istaken from a tune by a
favorite Australian rockband, will be showcasedduring a concert — for allages — to celebrate therelease of its debut EP.
