The Color Purple

I did this project over a classic book called The Color Purple. I chose this time in the book because it is a very significant point in the book that has to do with the main theme of this story.The first quote I chose is Harpo ast his daddy why he beat me. Mr. say, Cause she my wife. The quote is the stepson is asking his dad why he beats Celie, and he says because she is his wife. The meaning of this quote is that Celies husband beats her because she is his wife, which is part of the theme of this story. This quotes relates to a theme of the story because it is about female abuse. In this book a big theme is female abuse. The next quote I chose was Harpo, she say. Harpo the oldest boy. Harpo, dont let Celie be the one to bring all the water. You a big boy now. Time for you to help out some. Women work,he say. This quote is explaining that Harpo thinks women should do the work, and that he should not because he is a man. The meaning of the quote is that women should work and men should not which is racism. Racism to women is also a theme in this book because men are in charge and tell their women what to do and beat them to get them under control. The next quote I chose is Well how you spect to make her mind? Wives is like children. You have to let em know who got the upper hand. Nothing can do better than a good sound beating. This quote is the father telling his son to control his woman by beating her. The meaning of this quote is that in a relationship in this story, the woman in the relationship is abused and treated badly to show them that the man is in charge. This quote has to do with relationships/marriage and female abuse which are important themes at this point in the book and important themes to the whole story. Another important theme I found was standing up for yourself. Celie was told to stand up for herself in the book, but did not and suffered abuse because of it. Her stepson beat his wife, but his wife stood up for herself and did not have to suffer it. In this book the stepsons wife and Celie both stand up for themselves and leave their abusive husbands. The major themes in this story are relationship abuse, racism, and needing to stand up for yourself. Celie faced a lot of abuse because she was a female throughout her life time. Some examples are that she was raped by her father as a kid and abused by both her husband and her husbands kids because she was a woman. She didnt stand up for herself, so she had to face a lot of abuse until she finally stood up for herslf and the abuse stopped.
